As Manav opened his eyes, he saw Madhu sitting beside him, trying to wake him up. Her body fragrance and her damp hair suggested she had taken a shower. Manav's eyes struggled to fully open, still heavy with sleep. He looked towards the window, and darkness still lingered outside. Glancing at the clock, he realized it was twenty minutes past three in the night. "What's the matter, Madhu?" "Get up, wash your face, and freshen up. I'm heading to make tea. Then we'll go for a walk in the park." "It's still nighttime, Madhu. It's only three-twenty in the morning," he checked the clock again. "Nighttime? I'm already up and have taken a shower. I thought it was morning."
I went through a whole range of emotions while reading this book, from the joy of two people falling in love to the comfort they provided each other during difficult times. Reading the book felt like witnessing the scenes unfold in real life.
The narrative begins with Manav, a man who has faced many challenges in life with unwavering patience and determination. His story with Madhu starts with a chance encounter when he helps an injured dog. Destiny intervenes again when they meet at a railway station while traveling to the same wedding.
Their love blossoms over the years, leading Madhu to leave her home and family for Manav. He takes care of her, ensuring she never feels the absence of her loved ones. Even during times of sadness, he holds her close. Their love story is a beautiful portrayal of sacrifice, compromise, and the unwavering effort to be in each other's lives.
I was emotionally moved by their story, although I did feel the pacing was inconsistent at times, sometimes feeling rushed and other times slow and unnecessarily detailed. Additionally, the lengthy chapters made for a less comfortable reading experience.
Despite these minor drawbacks, this is a good book if you enjoy character-driven stories with a cultural backdrop and a strong emotional core.
There is a general notion about how love is a feeling that primarily conveys an emotional experience, the one which encompasses a range of sensations, including affection, care, passion, and connection.
However, in reality, love is an action, a dynamic force that goes beyond mere sensation or passion. And instead of it being a passive state, genuine love is demonstrated through deliberate, meaningful actions and behaviors.
‘Love is a Verb’ by author Pramod Rajput is thus a book which highlights how love is not just a feeling but a continuous series of choices and efforts made to nurture, support, and connect with others.
Always being academically brilliant since childhood and having received a full scholarship to IIT Kanpur, our main character, Manav’s sole aspiration was to excel in his engineering studies at and pursue an MTech from MIT, USA.
However, little does Manav know that a chance encounter with Madhu, while helping her take a stray dog to a vet would result in altering the course of events in his life, and he would soon fall so deeply in love with her, thereby making his actions speak louder than words.
This was a beautiful love story that not only paints a rosy picture about how when a couple get together, they have a happily ever after, but rather the realities and challenges that they have to overcome and how they need to work on their relationship every single day, with a heart-wrenching end.
It can be said that book underscores the importance of expressing love through tangible deeds, emphasizing the active and the nature of love in relationships and interactions. Hence, I am going to give this FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Time is a great teacher and nurturer. It teaches every individual to endure every sorrow and navigate through difficult situations." . True love exists. It does exist through the rains and rainbows, and surely survives the storm of any societal boundaries. Love is a verb is one such heartwarming love story of Madhu and Manav who never gave up on each other and, lived a fulfilling life of loving each other unconditionally. The story was set back in the mid 1900s where love was nothing but a test of time and distance. The only long distance communication was made possible through letters and prolonged wait. Madhu and Manav were destined to be together despite certain major unavoidable differences and miraculous coincidences. What kept me going with the flow was the fast narration with the time lapses. The characters were well deservingly portrayed. However, the conversations could've been expressed in a better way. In certain aspects, I was expecting some deeper insights, but it seemed the author was in a rush. However, the story was concluded in a fair way. Apart from the love, the major themes dealing with the main characters and events were friendship, family, career, and inconsistent efforts and dedication towards each other.
Review : This is a love story of two souls who are somehow destined to be together. Sets in the background of 1959, Manav and Madhu meet in a very unexpected way and immediately there is an attraction between them. And right after their journey of falling in love, being in love and fight for that love.
Both Manav and Madhu are interesting characters to follow. Their philosophy, their beliefs and their interests are a lot different at the same time somehow all of them balance each other. The story is intriguing and interesting in the sense that the author not only presents their love story as it is, the author also beautifully depicts the culture, the society, the background of the historical time of Kanpur to the international background.
The writing style of the author is easy and lucid which going to make you get into the story easily as it is for me.
If you read the synopsis of the book, I think that will be enough to make you read the story. And the story really have a good solid plot to follow. It can be a great treat for the readers so definitely recommend.
Title: Love Is A Verb Genre: Romance & Drama Author: Pramod Rajput
❣️My Review:
'Love Is A Verb's is a love story of the 50's where it was easy to find true love and honest soulmate.
This story is bout an orphan boy Manav from Allahabad who is studying at IIT Kanpur and a girl named Madhu who is resident of Kanpur and studying in school.
On the way to hostel Manav helps Madhu to take a hurted dog to the hospital and this is the beginning where the Matarani decided to bless them and bring them together forever as a soulmate.
The writer has skillfully and beautifully written the story where at the point the story engages us so much that it feels as if this all incident is taking place in front of our eyes.
This love story also defines the power of true love that is no matter what the circumstances are, no matter what the situations are if the love is true then we can pass everything with our partner.
After the completion of studies from IIT-Kanpur Manav persuaded his MIT from USA, Houston.
Will Manav and Madhu be able to manage this long distance relationship?
Will their love story would succeeded?
I can just say I love the novel which includes all the factors of love, romance, drama and emotions.
At some point while reading there was tears in my eyes too. What a heart touching novel.
It was my best read so far!
❣️My favorite verses of the novel:
👉🏻Kitne dino ke pyaase honge, yaaron socho toh Shabnam ka qatra bhi jinko dariya lagta hai.....
👉🏻Relationships in life are invaluable and should be cherished finding joy in each moment......
👉🏻Don't waste time arguing because life is limited and this age is too short for love......
The characters introduction was different as in it showed through the story rather than explaining it. Like portraying Madhu's character as kind and selfless when helping an injured dog on the street . Manav watching all that and felt something for her. Was it love at first sight for Manav? Maybe. Coincidence or i might say fate, the 2nd meeting was so long after.
✨ Their innocence and passion for their love was soo different than what we see in recent stories. Even with all the differences they had, Manv and Madhu managed to settle down, plan their future and finally get married.
✨Half of the book was kinda fairytale, too good to be true. Or maybe it was calm before the storm vibes. And the storm hit hard when Madhu was diagnosed with Alzheimer's stage 3.
✨ Although the writing was different and not as per my usual preference. It was a new experience reading this one. In a good way
✨Overall it was worth reading this book and I enjoyed the retro style love story.

Written by Pramod Rajput, "Love Is a Verb" A global story of love and the human condition, it is a poignant and exquisitely written book that cuts across cultural divides. This book is a must-read for everyone who enjoys a mix of romance and the eternal spirit of love because of Pramod Rajput's exceptional narrative skills. The story of love and sacrifice is masterfully told in this engrossing book.
The plot is set in 1959 with the introduction of Manav, a young man from a tiny hamlet who is a dedicated student navigating his life at IIT Kanpur while battling obstacles with tenacity. The foundation for love and compassion is laid by his meeting with a kind and sympathetic girl. The author expertly ties together the strands of fate, laying the groundwork for Manav and Madhu's budding romance.
Each skillfully written chapter advances the broader story arc. The author sensitively handles the complexity of love, from their first encounter on the streets of Kanpur to the difficulties of a long-distance partnership. The plot is given more depth by the inclusion of cultural customs and themes, which also give readers insight into the lives and morals of the characters. The narrative moves between different life stages as it goes along, portraying the core of how relationships change over time. The narrative gains authenticity from the realistic depiction of Manav and Madhu's struggles, both individually and as a pair. Throughout the entire book, there are recurring themes of dedication, sacrifice, and the enduring power of genuine love.
I was immediately drawn in by this story's engaging narrative from the very first chapter. I read the book largely with an eye toward its well-established structure and enjoyable sections. I was cheering for the main characters in several of the really good scenes.
The plot had so much complexity in this book that I found it impossible to put it down. Other layers included mental health and the Indian belief in love marriages. I wasn't as enthralled with the romance portion of the novel as I had been with some of the other recent novels I've read. At times, the tempo was erratic. It slightly seemed to have a few unimportant elements, in my opinion.
My god! I can't! I just can't control my tears. I mean, what was this story? It totally destroyed me. I am literally crying like hell right now while penning my thoughts about this book.
When I started reading it, I didn't think much of it. I thought it was just a cliche story where lovers meet under unfavourable circumstances, fight in a cruel world, and then stay happy together forever. But that was not the case in this one.
I always love to read love stories, so while I was not much impressed by the start of the book, I wanted to see where it's taking me. I enjoyed the meeting of Manav and Madhu at Kanpur railway station and the fact that they both had their birthdays on February 14th. The whole time they were planning their secret marriage, I was waiting for that plot twist where Villian enters and the plan goes down the drain. But it didn't happen. During the whole first half of the book, I was thinking, "Hmmmmmmmm, something's fishy; why is this story filled with all positivity?" And my fears came true when Madhu was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Even then, I didn't know that the book would affect me in such a way. The way Manav's love and dedication towards his partner were portrayed by the author was just pure magic. He was with his wife at every point in time; even when he was broken from the inside, he was trying to heal her and make her happy.
I was choked with emotions when Madhu eventually forgot Manav and even herself, and the heartwrenching reaction of Manav. My tears were not stopping. I was feeling heartbroken for Manav. The ending was something I can't describe in words. I don't know why this story affected me so much, but I have always been a lover of "love" itself, and this pure depiction of love moved me in ways I can't describe. I was truly and fully satisfied with the ending. It couldn't have been any better.
This was my first book by the author, and believe me, I am fan.
Love Is a Verb" by Pramod Rajput is an exquisite masterpiece that effortlessly weaves together a captivating storyline, vivid character descriptions, and brilliant non-linear storytelling. From the very first page, readers are drawn into a world where love is not just a sentiment but a powerful force that propels the characters through the complexities of life.
Rajput's storytelling prowess is evident as he skillfully crafts a narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The engaging storyline unfolds seamlessly, revealing the intricate layers of love and its transformative impact on the characters. The author's ability to convey emotions is nothing short of extraordinary, making the reader feel a profound connection to the characters and their journey.
What sets "Love Is a Verb" apart is the vivid character descriptions and development. Rajput breathes life into each character, endowing them with depth and complexity. The characters, especially Manav and Madu, are not mere figments of imagination but individuals with relatable struggles, dreams, and imperfections. The reader becomes emotionally invested in their stories, experiencing the highs and lows alongside them.
The non-linear timeline of the book adds an enriching layer to the reading experience. One of the most commendable aspects of the book is the author's ability to make the reader visualize the story as if it were unfolding right before their eyes. The descriptions are so vivid and evocative that the settings, emotions, and dialogues come to life on the page.
Manav and Madu's love story is the beating heart of the book, and it is impossible not to be moved by their journey. The characters' evolution is palpable, and as a reader, you find yourself rooting for their happiness, making every triumph and setback all the more poignant.
This is the first book that I have been reading the love story that goes through the decades exploring many things which is really unexpected. It embraces and intrigues when we start reading the first line of the first chapter which states that it begins in 1959. It begins with a strange feeling and at the same time it was quite interesting to get into the time frame of how the author narrated the love story at that time period? Manav and Madhu characters are easily adjustable and understanding each other. They are easily adaptable and manageable with their backgrounds and the love bond was strong in between them in spite of their differences. They both fall in love very easily and last forever throughout their life together until their last breath.
The book is not only concentrated on the love part, it also touches some social issues, geographic view, emotional circumstances, mental health, sensitivity and many more. How they met together incidentally, how they fall in love, how they find their souls in each of them were beautifully shown by the author's point of view in the initial chapters. The romance between them in the young age and the bond between them in older age was fantastically explored and that's the speciality of this book that has explicit the true love till the end even in the end of life.
The plot was average in the initial, fast paced in the middle, little dragged in between and ended in a well manner. The narrative part is slightly slow and many descriptions could have been avoided. And also in many places the timeline was rushed in order to give the completeness it seems. The author did a great job in representing Alzheimer's disease.
The book overall delves into the love, life and destiny into the emotional sense. Language is lucid. The title and the cover is an excellent choice. The characters are well crafted. It will give you an enjoyable read of love and compassion.

"Love Is a Verb" by Pramod Rajput transports readers to the many stages of life, love, and the enduring strength of relationships. From chance encounters to the challenges of distant love, the narrative deftly captures the complexity of human emotions. I was reminded by the book of how crucial it is to demonstrate love by deeds as opposed to just words.
Manav, the protagonist of the story, is a guy who has persevered through many hardships in life with steadfast patience and tenacity. The beginning of his tale with Madhu is a fortuitous meeting. Once more, fate steps in as they cross paths at a train station en route to the same wedding. Compared to what we see in contemporary stories, they were so different in their purity and intensity for their love. Despite all of the disagreements, Manav and Madhu were able to settle down, make plans for the future, and eventually tie the knot. The author adds surprising turns and twists as the plot develops to keep the reader interested and invested in the characters' fates.
This story is told in a smooth narrative one that easily pulled me in from the first chapter. I liked the interaction of characters and how the story fed off them. I mostly focused on the entertaining parts and the well-established structure of the book. I really enjoyed some parts and I was rooting for the main characters! However, I can honestly say that the romance part of the story didn't make me as giddy as some of the recent books I've devoured. The pacing was irregular at times. I felt like there is so much mundane details about everything.
Overall, the ideas and execution are really well done. I wish I could have related more to the characters so I could give it five stars, but it's still an entertaining and good romance read that I enjoyed. I'm looking forward to reading other books by the author in the near future.
Love is a Verb encompasses the trials and tribulation of maintaining a relationship after you have enjoyed your honeymoon period.
🕒This story is set in the 1960s era when being in love was tougher than falling in love.
🕓Manav is your quintessentially disciplined boy who is serious about his career and has his fair share of challenges.
🕝Enter Madhu, who is like a breath of fresh air and brought some colours to the life of Manav.
🥇I commend the author for crafting a realistic image of a relationship which is far from a rosy picture. The author has built a concrete plot justifying his title that Love is indeed a Verb which signifies physical or mental action. Love is more than the butterflies in the stomach or the abstract feeling of attraction.
🥇Any reader would relate to the challenges faced by Manav and Madhu who were navigating through long distance relationship and familial expectations.
🥇I also liked the subtle cultural background induced by the author in this story which brings alive the traditional essence of Kanpur. I would also like to commend the author for his ability to portray a realistic relationship in terms of Indian traditional context keeping in mind the mental barrier we face for inter-caste marriages and also while indulging in physical intimacy in a relationship.
👎I wish the author could have shed more light on the characters' experience in the US as that played a pivotal part in the storyline. At times, I felt some parts of the story to be too text-heavy which was slowing the pace.
🌟Overall, a very succinct and engaging plot which can give you a very important perspective of life and human relations.
- The narrative unfolds in 1959, immersing readers in the lives of two intricately depicted characters, Madhu and Manav. United by chance amidst sorrowful circumstances during their college years, the duo hails from disparate family backgrounds. As the story progresses, it spans the realms of their careers, emotions, and evolving relationship, culminating in marriage and the formation of their own family.
- Life, however, refuses to adhere to a linear trajectory for anyone. An unforeseen twist challenges the family's foundation of trust, love, and respect when Madhu receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. This unexpected turn alters the course of their days and years, prompting the narrative to delve into how the family confronts this new reality.
- Throughout the novel, the author masterfully captures the essence of true love. Each character, whether in a primary or secondary role, contributes significantly to the unfolding drama. Their well-developed emotions serve as a compelling force, drawing readers deeply into the narrative. The plot is thoroughly explored, with the author doing justice to the complexity of the central love story. The conclusion, simultaneously heart-breaking and heartwarming, encapsulates the true essence of marriage.
- In summary, this emotionally charged novel leaves an indelible impact, evoking both tears and a profound sense of fulfillment by its conclusion. The narration is enjoyable, and the writing style, though simple, proves engaging. I highly recommend this contemporary read to those seeking a genuine portrayal of real-life emotions and experiences.
Love stories are the most popular category of movies, stories, songs, or poems, but famous love tales share the Shakespearean magic of incompleteness or tragedy. Like all, even though I enjoy these tales, I don't call them love stories because, for me, love is not just a moment but the entire journey. “Love is a Verb” is my style of love story.
This is the story of Manav and Madhulika. One is a studious, poor orphan, and the other is a rich, beautiful princess. They meet accidentally on the roads of Kanpur while helping a wounded dog. The journey of their story is simple but magical until the very end. According to ancient literature (mainly Urdu literature), there are seven stages of love, and this story touches on all of them. The story begins with dilkashi, when both are attracted to each other. Slowly, it moves to mohobbat, but the journey is almost impossible from here. Manav and Madhu turned their love into a satisfying life with their belief in each other and Matarani.
When I started the book, I first thought they were together only due to attraction, but I had to read the entire book to understand the depth of these lovers. Their life was not a cake walk, but they turned this journey into a beautiful rainbow with their love. The author's style of narration is splendid, and the climax is just wow. I will surely recommend this book to all who are ready to savor retro romance with a pinch of Indian charm.

The book seemed like a casual romance at first, but reading further I realised that it has given me a glimpse of how beautiful life is and that we must cherish each moment with our loved ones. It also shows the importance of friendship and family which provides strength and support to us during our rainy days. We must also have great devotion towards God, just like Madhu had towards 'Matarani'. At the end, Madhu slowly forgetting Manav, the love of her life, due to her illness shattered me from inside and had me weeping. But, finally both of them leaving this world together helped to relieve some of my pain, and had me content with the ending.

Pramod Rajput's "Love is a Verb" takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster through the intricate journey of Manav and Madhu's enduring love. The narrative, though fast-paced, beautifully captures the essence of their relationship, from the initial spark to the challenges of life, all the way to the poignant moments in a hospital room. Rajput's storytelling prowess shines through as he skillfully weaves together the complexities of love, societal pressures, and the resilience of the human spirit. The characters, especially Manav and Madhu, come to life with relatable struggles and vulnerabilities, making the reader emotionally invested in their journey. With its non-linear timeline and vivid descriptions, "Love is a Verb" is more than a love story; it's a testament to the transformative power of love in the face of life's uncertainties.
In "Love is a Verb," Pramod Rajput masterfully crafts a narrative that transcends the conventional boundaries of a love story. The book explores the intricacies of love, portraying it not just as a sentiment but as a dynamic force that propels the characters through the ups and downs of life. The non-linear timeline adds depth to the storytelling, allowing readers to witness the evolution of Manav and Madhu's love from its inception to the poignant moments in a hospital room. Rajput's ability to convey emotions is extraordinary, creating a profound connection between the characters and the reader. "Love is a Verb" is a heartwarming journey that leaves a lasting impact, reminding us that love, indeed, is a verb—an action that has the power to transcend time and transform lives.
This is a close biographical account of a couple who goes against their world to stay by each other. Manav and Madhu are from starkly different backgrounds, yet the signs point at them being together. It begins with both of them in college, and ends with them dying together in one of the most beautiful show of romance.
I liked the way the book concludes. The plot points are really nice. Especially Manav's devotion towards Madhu as old age takes over is commendable.
I felt the narrative to be a bit slow. There were many descriptions that felt could be done without. Otherwise it was a nice way of describing their lives.
I also hoped to see more of the socio-economic situations they stood against. The inter-caste issues did find some attention, but the US experience, especially post-1965, could have had some mention. I felt the issues of living in the US were really overlooked. I also felt that in some places the timeline was rushed. The focus would definitely be on the love between Manav and Madhu, but their worldly experiences could have been expanded on.
I liked the representation of Alzheimers disease. It is a problem that persists throughout life before festering. And the author did a great job going in depth with its representation. What I thought could be done better was the timeline near the end. It is an unfortunate truth that Alzheimer patients often stay alive in a coma for long, and while a quick death is a blessing, I felt it could be presented better.
The ending was very touching, the idea of identity and body in love was a very beautiful point. I hoped to see more of their environment's impact on their love. Otherwise this is a different sort of romance novel.
