A Charming Misfortune by Tonya Kappes was a perfect addition to this series. June and Oscar have a case of murder that may or may not involve a group of Audubon Society members who are visiting Whispering Falls searching for a rare bird.

I couldn't put this book down with it's quickly paced plot, quirky and lovable characters, and the secrets and lies from the Audubon group members kept me turning the pages. I felt right at home visiting Whispering Falls again and I can hardly wait to go again. The ending was pretty special, too.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.

Weird things are happening in Whispering Falls but the first clues that appear are muddled so June isn't sure just what she is suppose to do. Her crystal ball keeps making bird noises which is no help and her car Mr. Prince Charming has brought her a bird charm for her bracelet. What does it all mean is June's first thought and starts trying to make sense of it all. When an Audubon Group comes to town looking for a rare species of birds things start to become more clear for June. Petunia shows up at her shop with the rare bird and one of the group spots it. Petunia wants to keep the bird hidden and asks June for help, she is afraid that no good can come of the group spotting the bird. June decides to set up a spotting of the bird but by midnight that night one of the group is found dead, murdered. Who killed the man and why is what June and Oscar must figure out before the group leaves town. Follow along as June uses her own brand of magic to search for a killer. In finding the killer she hopes to keep Whispering Falls out of the spotlight, so it remains the quiet and magical town it has always been. I can't wait to see what direction the author takes June in next!

When a group from the Audubon Bird Watching Society arrive in Whispering Falls because of a rumor that the rare Spangled Smokey Momoko had been spotted in the area. And they wanted to verify if it was true.

The owner of a zoo that specializes in the protection and breeding programs to reestablish an endangered species also shows up unexpectedly. When he is found dead, all the members of the society, plus one of the Whispering Falls members also fall under suspicion.

Because of the local laws, Oscar can only hold them for 24 hours as they are non-magical people, and he will have to turn the case over to the regular police departments.

Many of the community use their combined skills to solve the case and keep Whispering Falls safe.

This is another fun story in this series, and it is my personal favorite one after the first one. There are well-defined characters and a bit of humor in it.

I was so happy to be back in Whispering Falls for Book 12 of the Magical Cure Mystery Series.

I LOVED seeing June Heal as a Professor at UnHidden Hall. It wasn't too long ago she was a student their herself.

Trouble is brewing for June and Whispering Falls that involves a mystery, a seance, and a possible rare bird sighting which leads to the murder of a Zoo Owner.

I have read every one of the books in the Magical Cure Mystery Series and this one is REALLY special. I really enjoy all the well developed characters that I have come to know and love. This book felt like going home again.

The author expertly weaves a well thought out mystery while keeping the characters fresh and surprising. The ending is completely magical .

A Charming Misfortune by Tonya Kappes returns readers to Whispering Falls. June Heal is heading to her shop, A Charming Cure when her crystal ball, Madame Torres warns her of birds by cooing at her. She passes Eloise Sandalwood who warns her to watch out for that birds. A group from the Audubon Bird Watching Society descent upon the town looking for Spangled Smoky Momoko. It is a rare bird that is becoming extinct. Adam Vedder, a zoologist with Prebble Exotic Zoo, wants to capture the bird for his zoo and there seems to be some animosity from the birders toward him. At a camp out that night, a crow cries out at midnight and flies by. June follows the crow and finds a deceased Adam. Oscar Park, June’s husband and the town’s peace keeping officer, has twenty-four hours to solve the crime before he loses his suspects. With the clock ticking, June dives into the case while Petunia Shrubwood works to keep the Spangled Smoky Momoki out of sight. Can the group expose the killer before the suspects take flight?

A Charming Misfortune is the twelfth A Magical Cures Mystery. While I recommend reading this entertaining series in order, A Charming Misfortune can stand on its own. I always enjoying digging into one of Tonya Kappes’ novels. Her conversational writing style draws the reader into the book and keeps them engaged. The story moves along faster than Mr. Prince Charming chasing after fireflies. The characters are developed and delightful. June Heal has come a long way since she moved to Whispering Falls. She runs her shop, teaches at the magical university, makes her special potions and is married to her understanding and loving husband, Oscar. I like her style of dress including her pointy toe witchy boots. Whispering Falls is a unique town filled with quirky characters who each have a special bewitching talent. The vivid descriptions of the town bring it alive for me. The mystery was intriguing with several suspects and misdirection. If you pay close attention to the clues, you can solve the mystery before the big reveal (or you may be surprised). There is humor sprinkled throughout the story that is guaranteed to have you giggling. The ending of A Charming Misfortune is special and will delight fans of the series. A Charming Misfortune has an intuitive feline, a bevy of baked goods, a beautiful plumed bird, suspicious suspects, magical misdirection and a spirited witch.

I may have mentioned this before but "The Magical Cures Series" was the first books I read by Tonya Kappes, and lead her to be one of my favorite authors. We're now at book 12 already! and I must admit I have purchased them all but not read all of them yet.

When I was given the opportunity to read an ARC copy I jumped on it and so glad I did I think this is one of my favorites so far.

In this instalment June is going to the birds when a group of birdwatchers descend on Whispering Falls in search of the Spangled Smokey Momoko bird. June's intuition is off the radar as she tries to stop a killer and in the end solve a murder.

As always I loved all the quirky characters, and the story is well written, intriguing and fast paced. It is easy to get lost in Tonya’s books and I almost always want to finish them in one sitting. The nice thing is you don’t have to read each book in order but for full enjoyment, I recommend that you do.

I really enjoyed this latest installment and highly recommend to all my cozy mystery loving friends.

I received an electronic ARC of the book and plan on ordering a paperback version. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. What is so special about this bird hanging out in Petunia's hair?
A Charming Misfortune by Tonya Kappes is the twelfth book in this very excellent series. Magical Cures Mystery is the first Tonya Kappes series that I have read and it is still my favorite. I love the wonderful world that June Heal lives in; it is an amazing place filled with fabulous characters.
June Heal
June Heal is the main character and the narrator for this exciting series. She is a wonderful main character, and it's fun to try to solve these mysteries with her. This one was definitely no different to try and figure out with June and all her friends that have helped. June uses her intuition in more ways than one to solve the mysteries that come to her little magical town. I like that no matter how long we have been in her world, June has stayed the same girl from the beginning. She loves her Ding Dongs, Mr. Prince Charming, and helping her customers by getting the correct product to help them out in whatever they might need.
Oscar Park
Oscar Park is June's love interest and cop intel. He has doesn't always need her help with cases but June takes it upon herself to help Oscar. Like in this case, he does need June's help. Oscar doesn't like to admit when he needs help but likes it when she does help. The problem Oscar has with June is when he suspects one of her friends, and she doesn't think that they could do it. Oscar and June are perfect together, and married life suits them quite well.
A Charming Misfortune CRMystery
The mystery aspect is excellent and impressive. It all started with a bird that came to town. The bird, of course, is one that the Audubon Society is looking for to help increase their population to keep from going extinct. This event leads to June and Petunia trying to figure out what a meeting meant and who would have killed a zoo owner that is trying to save the bird? This task is even more difficult with their time crunch of holding mortal beings for only twenty-four hours before involving the police. Thankfully Oscar has June to help.
Five Stars
Charming Misfortune by Tonya Kappes is such a wonderous book from Ms. Kappes. This one reminded me of why I love this series. I loved everything about this book and can't wait for the next one. I am rating it with five stars and recommending it to all the paranormal cozy mystery fans out there. This story is Tonya Kappes at her best.

Review:

One thing you know when you read one of this author’s books is that you are going to love the characters. She has a way to make the characters come alive and you wish that you were friends with them. This book is no exception. Whispering Falls is full of quirky loveable characters and I would love to go there for a visit.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy quick read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and those descriptions pulled me into the story from the very first page and pulled me along for a fun ride. The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a steady pace. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and I was not one hundred percent sure of the outcome until it was revealed.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted paranormal cozy. Grab a copy and enjoy your magical time.

A Charming Misfortune earns 5/5 Star Anise Potions...Magically Entertaining!

More than charming...it’s totally entertaining! Whispering Falls has quite the mystical repertoire, and residents serve the many tourists who visit, even though the tourists are unaware of the true magic that lies beneath the surface. So, life in Whispering Falls is quite full, but June feels something isn’t right...Could “misfortune” mean “murder”? A club of bird enthusiasts have arrived eager to record the existence of a rare bird rumored in the area, and an accidental sighting ignites the group’s interest. However, it’s the dead body of a zookeeper that has June and her husband/town officer concerned. It is imperative they find the killer before outside law enforcement are emboldened to take over. Whispering Falls’ magical characteristics must remain cloaked from the outsiders.

I am an eager fan of many of the series penned by Tonya Kappes, and always thought I’d get to her Magical Cures series soon. Well, better late than... I began with this twelfth book, and although I was confused about some of the magical and June’s “charms” references, after a few chapters, they mostly ironed themselves out. Tonya’s writing style is well-paced, written from June’s perspective, and includes descriptive language, delightful humor, and dialogue that does well to illustrate setting, characters, tone, and personalities. The mystery follows a traditional cozy formula with twists, turns, and a satisfying conclusion along a delightful magical theme that works, no juvenile hocus pocus. Although the story line is intriguing, it’s the characters that are the true stars. June is strong and clever enjoying a marvelous relationship with her husband Oscar, who seems to see value in June’s contributions. The other residents are quirky, not silly, adding to the enjoyment. So charming! I am a fan, and thrilled that there are so many other books in the series to enjoy.

Disclosure: I received an ARC. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

Today in Whispering Falls KY, June is getting many warnings about birds. Don't worry, it has nothing to do with Alfred Hitchcock's birds. ;) A group of visitors are in town to try to spot an endangered and extremely rare bird. Unfortunately for the town folk, not every member of this group is there with noble intentions, and this was made known when one of the visitors is found dead in the middle of the night while they were all on an overnight camping trip. With the help of their spiritual gifts, June is able to uncover the truth before they all head out of town. Several of the village's residents offer June some support as they come across important information through their gifts.

This series is set in a fictional picturesque town filled with magic.... though the mortals know nothing about that magic. It is quite descriptive when it comes to the environment and settings. The characters aren't too complex. The regulars are a little more so then the guest stars. We learn just enough to understand their behaviors and get a feel for the kind of people they are. The mystery isn't too convoluted, but there are several possible suspects, and you don't know who the real criminal is until the very end. It isn't filled with an abundance of clues that can get confusing, but it's not so simple that its boring. This book is part of a series that can be read as a stand alone. (Anything you need to know about the characters is explained.) It is a clean read and safe for teens and up. If you follow the series, there is a nice little surprise at the end. :)

*I volunteered to review an ARC of this book.

Things are going to the birds, literally, for holistic spiritualist June Heal and her beloved town Whispering Falls. An Audubon Society Chapter comes to town when they think a rare, almost extinct Spangled Smoky Momoko has been sighted. The bird is, in fact, in town and hiding in Petunia’s hair, and she and June do all they can to keep it hidden from the Society and exotic zoo owner Adam Vedder. When Vedder is murdered, associations with the Society members and motives arise. June does all she can to help her husband Oscar, the town’s officer, get to the bottom of it all.

Author Tonya Kappes is quite the prolific writer, and I have read, and enjoyed, most of her other series but have been behind on the Magical Cures Mysteries. The more I read of these books, the more it becomes my favorite of her series. There are a lot of magic and paranormal elements, but Kappes manages to balance it with the real world to make it believable. The characters are quirky enough to be endearing, the small town setting charming, and the pace brisk.

A CHARMING MISFORTUNE is a fun, light, entertaining read. Perfect for an escape from the real world for a few hours.

I received and ARC of this title and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.

Magic, mystery and murder make A Charming Misfortune a must read. June Heal with her fairy-god cat are tracking down a murderer. Why was Adam Vedder, a Zoologist, killed? Was it because of the rare bird who's hiding in this special town? June needs answers and I wanted her to get them. I certainly didn't want this charmed world to be revealed. It's so much fun to escape to Whispering Falls. I enjoy watching June and Oscar work together to save the day. It's almost as entertaining as hearing Madam Torres and Mr. Prince Charming bickering. I enjoy reading this series with its quirky characters and magical beings. The dialogue makes me laugh. It's filled with snark and sass. The murder victim wasn't popular but he didn't deserve to be murdered. Watching June and her friends put together clues to find the culprit kept me reading. Her instincts are spot on. I can't wait to return and see what's the next challenge. Tonya Kappes has such an inventive mind. I don't want to miss anything.

This is my favorite book of the Magical Cures Series by Tonya Kappes. This series should be read in order for greatest enjoyment. I had a bit of a time getting into this series. I am happy I stayed with it as, with each book, the series improved. I enjoy the characters in Whispering Falls. June is one of my favorite characters. The town of Whispering Falls is full of magical beings. There are some quirky characters living in this town. I loved the mystery in this book. I thought the suspect was well hidden. And the ending! Something unexpected for me!
If you are not into paranormal cozy mysteries I would recommend you to check out a different series by Tonya Kappes. She is a prolific writer. Her series are fun to read, filled with interesting characters and charming towns you want to visit. If you like strange happenings that can’t be explained, Magical Cures could be your series.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Welcome back to Whispering Falls where quite a few of the residents have magic of some kind which they use for their daily lives as well as to solve murders. Abilities kept hidden from the rest of the world of course. June's gift starts acting up at the very beginning warning her of trouble to come even if it is a little hard to decipher. Other gifts give clues as well but since it is early they welcome a group of bird watchers to the area that are hoping to spot a very rare bird. A sighting of this very bird leads to a grand adventure that ends with a murder no matter how hard June and the others try to prevent it. Now it is a race against the clock to solve the crime in the time limit they are given before the regular cops are called in. Makes for a fun, light-hearted, magical, cozy mystery that you will be unable to put down. Full of little details that are surprisingly timed as well as utterly charming. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

This the 12th book in the Magical Cures mystery series, but works well as a stand-alone. I’ve only read a bit of this series before, but I fully enjoyed the book and want to read the entire series in order. Tonya Kappes is one of my favorite authors and she has interwoven another very original mystery. June Heal, the main character, is likable and fascinating. I highly recommend this book and series. I really enjoy this series. June and her friends are trying to prevent a problem. They thought of everything and then put the plan into action. But, a murder happened anyway. They are racing to solve the murder before the suspects leave town. The man was not well liked and there are plenty of suspects. I like the surprise at the end.

The Magical Cures Mysteries were my introduction to Tonya Kappes and hold a special place in my heart. Whispering Falls, Kentucky, is a truly magical place - home to June Heal, her husband Oscar, and a fantastic supporting cast of magically gifted folks. Everyone who lives and works in Whispering Falls has a gift that helps them both in their business and in keeping the community happy and healthy.
June's gift is her intuition, which she funnels into healing potions for the magical and nonmagical alike. While it can be very helpful, her intuition also gets her into trouble - she is apt to stick her nose in places it doesn't belong and often is led straight into dangerous situations.
In A Charming Misfortune, June's intuition is screaming for her to listen as are her spirit guides - Madam Torres who resides in a crystal ball and Mr. Prince Charming, June's fairy god cat. All June hears are the cooing and cawing of birds.
Even when Whispering Falls is invaded by an enthusiastic branch of the Audobon Society, hoping desperately for a glimpse of the Spangled Smoky Momoko, the trouble isn't entirely clear. It isn't until tragedy strikes on a bird-watching camping trip that June is thrust headlong into an investigation that puts not only her safety but that of the Spangled Smoky Momoko and Whispering Falls into jeopardy.
A Charming Misfortune is an excellent story. The pacing is quick, the plot is twisty and fun, and the characters feel like old friends. While this book can be read as a stand-alone novel, it is most satisfying if read in series order. If it is truly the last book of the Magical Cures Mysteries, it is a fine end - albeit one that leaves room for another visit to Whispering Falls.
Many thanks to Tonya Kappes for allowing me to read and review an ARC of A Charming Misfortune.

A group of bird watchers, from the Audubon Bird Watching Society, arrived in Whispering Falls. They have one particular bird in mind, the Spangled Smoky Momoko, a rare bird. As the group disembarks, twin sister ghost whisperers, Constance Karima, and her sister Patience, who own Whispering Falls Funeral home, state they have a customer.

When Petunia pays a visit to June Heal, a homeopathic spiritualist, in her store, a bird pops out of her hair and flies to visit Madame Torres, June's crystal ball. When some members of the bird watching group show up at A Charming Cure, Paris Rush, is alerted when the bird takes flight from Madame Torres. Paris is sure, she's actually seen the Spangled Smoky Momoko!

After June's cat, Mr. Prince Charming, delivers a charm, it only means trouble. The charm meant either June or someone she loved needed protection. June is warned about finding out about the bird before the crow flies at midnight.

June, along with Petunia come up with a plan to try to keep the Spangled Smoky Momoko safe and lead the Audubon Bird Watching group out for camping overnight. Despite all precautions taken, one of the members turns up dead. Now, there's a killer to be found.

I love visiting June, and the town of Whispering Falls. The town natives all have special and unique gifts, that they keep hidden from the regular folk. Each, of the town natives, is special, but I'm a little partial to Constance and Patience. Their oddness makes them endearing. Wonderful read, and I loved the ending! I recommend this to all paranormal lovers!

I was given an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

I love, love, love June Heal and Whispering Falls-once you read the series, I know you will too! June and her friends are on the hunt for another murderer, but this time, it may be one of her dearest friends. But once again, things are not as they seem! An Audubon group comes to Whispering Falls in search of the extremely rare Spangled Smoky Momoko. Some want to just photograph it, while others want to capture it and put it in captivity and bring its species back to life. Someone just doesn't want that to happen!

The reason I gave this story 4 stars is because I felt like, while the storyline was great, there was a lot of information that was given and then just kind of left there. For instance, the Karima sisters have a lost soul trying to reconnect with a tourist who is living. This is a big part of Chapter 1, and while it is brought up later in the book, it never really explains who the spirit is (unless it did and I just completely mis-read even though I read the book twice to be sure with the same result).

But that being said, be sure to pick this story up and give it a read-and be sure to read the other books within the series! There is a lot of fun characters and a great storyline that will make you want to visit Whispering Falls and stay. This is my favorite part of Tonya's stories-she leaves you wanting more!

This series never ceases to entertain me and, at book #12, each is better than the last one. June Heal has her hands full and it's for the birds. Her fairy godcat, Mr. Prince Charming has given her a bird charm for her bracelet, not a casual gesture, it's a sign she not ignore. Then her crystal ball, Madame Torres keeps making bird noises and, to top it off, a very, very rare bird, a Spangled Smokey Momoko has taken up residence in Petunia's hairdo. The bird better stay hidden because a tour group of bird watchers has come to town and one of them, Adam, wants to capture the bird and put it in his exotic species zoo and breed it. On top of that, the very odd Karima sisters ask June to help them with a request from a sort of ghost. With those two ladies things can get a bit fuzzy.
As June sets about to perform a smudge ceremony little does she envision that Adam, the zoo guy, will soon be murdered and she and her policeman husband, Oscar, will have to race the clock to find the killer. The magical village rule states that they have 24 hours and then they have to turn the investigation over to the mortal, non-magical police force. The magical residents of the village all come together to find the answers and keep their magical world a secret from outsiders.
If you are new to this series, not to worry, this can stand alone very well but be warned, you may want to get your hands on the previous books in the series and line them up for some very enjoyable binge reading.

Why is June Heal surrounded by birds, well not literally? June’s crystal ball keeps make bird noises, her cat Mr. Prince Charming gives her a bird charm, an Audubon Group is in town, and her friend, Petunia, shows up with a rare bird in her shop. Petunia wants to keep the bird hidden from the Audubon Group and asks June for help, during their scheme to convince the group they are looking in the wrong place for this bird one of the people in the group dies suspiciously. Can June help her husband, Oscar, which is the town’s Sheriff, solve the death before time runs out?

Once I started this book I couldn’t put it down. The mystery had several twists and turns to keep me guessing whodunit, which I didn’t figure out until the big reveal at the end. The characters are quirky and fun, with well-developed relationships. I enjoyed that the storyline included the Audubon Society, I’m not a “birdwatcher” but I do enjoy sitting out in my backyard listening to the birds and other wildlife. At the end of the book, there is something special that is announced that if you are a Magical Cures Mystery fan you won’t want to miss. You don’t have to be a fan already to enjoy this book however, you can still enjoy the story very much like a stand-alone. Although you will probably be a fan of the series and Author Tonya Kappes when you finish the book.

I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.

There's mystery afoot in Whispering Falls. A group of Audubon Society birdwatchers has descended after learning of a sighting of the elusive Spangled Smoky Momoko. The rare bird sighting also attracts Adam Vedder, a zoologist with a zoo specializing in exotic animals, hoping to capture the Spangled and breed it in captivity. June is sensing something about misfortune. Madam Torres, her crystal ball, keeps chirping, and Mr. Prince Charming, her godcat, has brought her a bird charm. And what is this about a crow flying at midnight?

While the birdwatchers are camping out, looking for the Spangled, Adam Vedder is found dead. All of the birdwatchers, plus a beloved Whispering Falls resident, fall under suspicion. Oscar has 24 hours to solve the crime or else the mortal police will have to be called in. He and June are up against a deadline as they try to figure out who is responsible for Adam's death. Luckily, they've got some help from the other residents of Whispering Falls.

I really enjoy the Magical Cures Mystery series, and this book was no exception. Ms. Kappes spins a lively yarn that hooked my interest and made this a very quick read. June and Oscar are adorable, and the other residents of the town are so quirky, it's just delightful. I wish I could visit Whispering Falls for real!

A Charming Misfortune is another exciting installment in Kappes' Magical Cures mystery series. I love this series because it combines magic and mystery together in an entertaining read. I have read several books in this series, and I really enjoyed this latest one. When a bird watching group shows up in Whispering Falls, June finds herself trying to protect the town when one of the members of the group is found dead. June and Oscar have a limited amount of time to solve this mystery so the pressure is on.

Kappes does a great job at setting up a compelling read that captures the reader's attention from the very beginning. Its been a while since I had read this series so I enjoyed seeing all of my favorite characters back again. This series' secondary characters really add to the charm and the magic of the stories, and I loved how June and her friends came together to solve this latest mystery. When June's friend becomes a suspect, the stakes are really raised so I enjoyed seeing how June handled this latest development. Overall A Charming Misfortune proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading June's next adventure.

Received a copy of A Charming Misfortune from the author in exchange for my honest review.

The book description is not what this book is about, substitute smudge for séance and there really isn’t much about the school except that June goes there to retrieve some items since summer is in session. Also, the book is longer than 15 pages.

A group from a local Audubon bird watching society descends on Whispering Falls, KY to catch a glimpse of the rare Spangled Smokey Momoko. Also, on their doorstep is an exotic zoo owner in pursuit of the same bird.
The zoo owner winds up dead and Oscar, June’s husband has 24 hours to solve the crime before he must turn it over to the state police.

This is the first book in the series that I have read. I was introduced to June Heal in a crossover short story with the Killer Coffee Series. I really liked this. As Ms Kappes other series, I find it smartly written with great characters. She has a way of making the characters come to life before my eyes. I feel like I know them and for the most part like the ones you should and not warm up to those that you shouldn’t like.

If you haven’t given this series a shot, please do. You will become a fan in no time.
I received an advanced e-book copy of this book and am not required to leave a positive review.

Welcome back to the charming town where magic, happiness and mystery awaits. The town has been overtaken by a group of bird watchers. They seem to think that a rare bird is there and they are determined to find it.

It was so nice to have the charming characters back in this fun and exciting book. I would love to visit a town like this and experience all it has to offer. It made me laugh so hard to read the extinct bird fly out of Petunia’s hair. Can you imagine the excitement that stirred up?

Jane and her friends will have their hands full when a murder takes place right there in their charming town. The race is on to find the killer before someone else becomes a victim. The author sure knows how to keep her readers entertained with characters that jump off the pages and team up to solve the mystery. I tried so hard to figure out who the killer was, but the talented author took me by surprise. Don’t miss this wonderful journey to Whispering Falls and follow along as Jane and her friends try to keep the town safe from danger.

I received an arc copy from the author. The review is my own opinion.
