I Love You in French

Rate this book
Sparrow I want a love - the hit me in the guts and make me feel something kind of love. The kind of love my parents shared. My father was American and my mother was French, and while I've never had a desire to leave my small, New England town of Birch Borough, or my bakery and café, Sparrow’s Beret, I want to be brave. And I’m not sure that I am. My chances at finding a life changing love feel more like a fallen soufflé than a flaky maple croissant. Cue Handsome Stranger. He’s new to our town and while his voice is like the crackly top of a perfect crème brûlée, I’ve made the ridiculous mistake of falsely claiming (twice) that I’ll date a Frenchman or date no man. And, as you can see, it clearly hasn’t worked for me so far. Rafe When I landed in Birch Borough, all I wanted was to find a way to get back my creative spark so I could write the lyrics I needed to make music again. I didn’t plan on meeting Sparrow, a woman who has single handedly turned my world upside down with a glimpse of her face on a moving train car. To find her again feels like fate. So much so that when I end up offering to help her get the man of her dreams, I don’t realize that I’m about to be in the fight of my life to not hold on to her myself. And after the heartache I’ve had between Paris and LA, from famous parents to an ex who stole my songs, I can’t find the courage to tell her my secret. If she’s going to love me, it has to be for me and definitely not because I’m French. So I know I can’t fall for her. Except, I already have. I Love You in French is a sweet, swoony, small-town, closed door rom-com with lots of heat but none of the spice (except cinnamon). Full of the warmth of the fall season, it’s the first in a series of standalone rom-coms set in the fictional New England town of Birch Borough.

I Love You in French by Sara North Review

I Love You in French by Sara North is a deeply tender, small-town contemporary romance that centers on Sparrow, a baker in the cozy New England town of Birch Borough who dreams of a love as powerful and enduring as the one her French mother and American father shared. Sparrow’s heart feels flakey and unpredictable, much like her beloved maple croissants until a mysterious stranger named Rafe wanders into her world, voice smooth and songs soulful as crème brûlée. Rafe, a musician seeking his creative spark, is captivated by Sparrow from the moment he sees her on a passing train, and what begins as a chance encounter slowly blossoms into something warm and profound as they navigate attraction, healing, and the courage it takes to love again. This closed-door rom-com has cozy autumn vibes, heartfelt moments, and a small town that feels like a place you could wander into yourself.

When I slipped into this story, what moved me most was the way North’s gentle prose made me feel the sweep of Sparrow’s hopes and the fragile courage it takes to open your heart after loss and loneliness. Instead of rushing, the romance unfolds at a pace that lets you savor each laugh, shy smile, and whispered confession, much like lingering over warm pastries in Sparrow’s café. Rafe’s journey to reconnect with his music and confront his own fears felt just as compelling as the blossoming love between them, and their chemistry was both tender and real. The supporting characters, especially Sparrow’s friends, brought laughter and a sense of community that grounded the story beautifully. The only time I felt slightly adrift was in a few scenes where the pacing softened before regaining momentum, but overall this book wrapped me in a cozy, autumnal warmth that lingered long after I finished. It was the kind of romance that made me smile, reflect, and feel genuinely hopeful about love’s quiet magic.

Rating: 4 out of 5
Because the emotional depth, charming setting, and heartfelt connection between Sparrow and Rafe made this a cozy, unforgettable read.

i’m always a sucker for a small town romance with meddling townspeople, especially when there are seniors, and this delivered. i loved lily and graham and the way they supported sparrow and rafe. i’m excited to see what’s brewing between them. i also loved that this story was full of pastries and coffee. i definitely got some croissants to enjoy while i devoured this precious romance!
this was such a beautiful debut and i’m looking forward to sara’s next book!

Came for the French pastries, the fake dating and the handsome French MMC who just so happens to be a musician and wear Converse. (Um, swoon.) Stayed for the charming New England small town Gilmore Girls vibes, the Emily in Paris references, the well expressed emotions—especially the vulnerability—the poetic writing and the humor. This book was as sweet as Sparrow’s maple croissants.

This book is as sweet as maple croissants. It's oh so cozy, the romance is swoony (such a dreamy French musician MMC), it's closed door with all the right tension, and the setting itself is such a charming escape. Sara's writing also had me laughing out loud at certain points.
Highly recommend it!!

Fated Lovers- The book trope I didn't know I needed, but man- did 'I Love You in French' deliver on that. At first it all seemed too good to be true (and honestly- in real life it probably is), but that's why we read, right? To be transporting into happily ever afters- to believe in 'a full kind of love'.

Sara's characters (Gladys has my heart) and small town setting (Stars Hallow vibes for sure) jump off the page in the most delicious way (like a sweet treat from Sparrow's bakery).

Rafe (the MMC) is swoon worthy and I don't know if it was the author's intent but I pictured French singer/actor Tom Leeb through the whole book, especially when we found out Rafe has a pair of glasses. (One of my personal fav looks of Mr. Leeb- so I get it Sara- I get it- LOL).

This is also a closed door romance, but one that is done so well, you don't even miss the spice. If you need any example, please see Chapter 20 and Sparrow/Rafe's first kiss. Sara wrote that steamy of a scene without a single piece of dialogue being said between the couple. It was good, y'all.

There were a few bugs here or there that made me drop a star rating, but nothing that deterred me from loving the overall feel and flow of this story. I did think the pacing was a little slow at the beginning of the story (as I find in most first books in series as the author takes the time to set up the world that will be carried forth in future novels). This changed about halfway through the book, when this particular couple and first-time author got their feet underneath of them and we were off to the races (the dance scene in the bakery and everything after hit the right timing beats). I did wish we could move away from the (in my opinion) overused descriptions that talk about Sparrow smelling like butter and sugar or croissants or coffee (insert other bakery ingredient here scent) and her only wanting a French man (this was explained a bit more later in the story, but still- I was ready to move on from that line much sooner). There was also a bit of a continuity issue towards the end of the book when Sparrow and Rafe are returning to Boston from Nashville. The scene with Rafe's parents seems like a weird/random insert that breaks the flow of that chapter. While I would love to know more about that relationship between Rafe and his family (Does he cut them out completely? Is he trying to repair that relationship? Etc.) I don't know if that scene matches with the prior paragraph about the couple enjoying the day in Boston seeing all the sites. Like I said minor details, but ones that I think would push this story to a new level if corrected.

Although I don't know Sara personally, it was obvious how much of herself she put into this self-published debut novel and for that she should be extremely proud of what she's accomplished. I can't wait to see what Sara has in store with the next "Love in Birch Borough" book. I'm excited to find out what exactly went on between Lily and Graham. Sara's set up perfectly the second chance and enemies to lovers (ish) tropes for their storyline. If you have an ARC group- please sign me up! Lily is my spirit animal and I adored her in 'I Love You In French' and can't wait to see her spark in the next story.

Review:
This book is so so romantic. Rafe is just so sweet to Sparrow. And I love his nickname for her. And they way they tease and flirt with each other was so cute. And Sparrow’s longing for a relationship which is like her parents who love each other so much, it reminds me of the chorus part of the song by Jax entitled “Like My Father” and your heart will just melt if a guy serenades to you just like Rafe serenades to Sparrow. And they have each other to encourage and comfort each other towards their dreams and also about what happened to their lives. And love their date and also the sweet scene that is just like one of the La La Land scene (so dreamy). And love Lily and Gladys because they just couldn’t help to push them two together (okay, can’t spoil that much read it then you will know what happened) because they are like Sparrow’s moms. And of course, Lily is such a scene stealer. I hope that Sara would write her love story too. This story made me smile, grin, laugh and also swoon and make me feel hungry as well. I would love to try the croissant and the French muffin.

Can’t wait to read her next book.

I Love You in French is the debut novel of @authorsaranorth . It tells the story of Sparrow, a French American bakery owner, and Rafe, a musician. Each has pretty significant walls up around their hearts and we get to see them work through those challenges together to find healing.

In it, you’ll find:
🥐 small town New England
🍂 Autumn vibes
🥐 so much delicious food
🍂 stint of fake dating
🥐 French
🍂 processing grief & loss

I am quite interested in Lily and Graham’s story and look forward to finding the out their history!

Quotes That Stood Out:
•When your heart has been broken enough, I think you forget how to chase joy.

•A person can only carry so much before they lose themselves in the process.

•"But the thing is, life isn't certain. I know you know this. Tragedies happen. People let us down. Even happy moments don't last. And so, it's up to us to hold on to what we can.”

•"And I guess that's what falling in love will do to you. Love makes you not want to hide.”

•All I can feel is grateful. Because I remember what my life was like before I met him, and I feel so deeply the miracle it is to choose someone and have them choose you in return.

Oh my goodness, this was such a sweet read... I was drawn into this story right from the first non-meeting and it held me right through to the end. The premise of this story was so fun--- Sparrow has declared that she will only date someone who is French... but when she meets Rafe (and even before), she is drawn to him... and he seemingly is not French.

These two are absolutely the sweetest together. As avid a romance reader as I am, I have to admit I haven't found that I have read a lot of 'fated love' stories... but this one definitely has me questioning why I haven't because I very quickly fell in love with that aspect of the story. Throw in a musician MMC, a super cozy fall setting, a meddling best friend and a hint of fake dating... there really was just so much to love about this story. The way the story was written also really drew me in and felt like it had almost a lyrical quality to it... fitting with Rafe's character, but I think that also added to the romantic feel of it all. This is Sara North's debut, and it most certainly has me looking forward to seeing more from her in the future.

I Love You in French is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.

**I received an ARC for consideration. All opinions are my own.

4.5 rounded up to a 5 star rating. This book is the most atmospheric. I felt transported to Birch Borough and the author really introduces you to the aesthetic. It feels like she gives you a lot to stop and look around at, so to speak. New England with a Parisian twist.

This is much more character driven than plot driven. I know some readers love that, but I was not used to it and I would say that is the only reason my rating is 4.5 and not 5 stars officially. The plot is secondary to Rafe and Sparrow as main characters, whom I loved each by the way. Their vulnerability is everything, Rafe is the sweetest self-aware book boyfriend and Sparrow's aesthetic was lovely. I enjoyed being in each of their heads.

Getting more of the friends in the second half really excited me for the next book, which I will be reading. This is a great fall romance recommendation!

Angst: medium amount

3.5 stars, rounded to 4.

This very sweet romance is perfect for this time of year. I felt like I was enjoying an autumn Hallmark movie, all cozy and inviting. The book was so atmospheric...I wanted to curl up in a sweater with a coffee and a croissant.
Lily was an absolute gem and definitely my favorite character. She was a spitfire and I loved it.
All in all, I would recommend if you are looking for a light autumn read, a fan of cozy Hallmark movies and don't mind some intense kissing scenes. Prepare yourself though...you will find yourself craving croissants.

Content warning:
There was a little too much physicality to the romance for me. The kisses were very descriptive and both characters went into major details describing each other in a sensual way. I felt a little uncomfortable at times, but that is a personal thing. There is some implied marital s*x at the end of the book, but nothing is actually on-page.

I received an ARC of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a review, positive or negative. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I cannot shout about my love for this book enough. I was desperately trying to quickly devour it, but also sad that it was coming to a close. It’s that good.

Rafe and Sparrow have the love story that you want to hear about. There is love, laughter, hilarity…just everything in this book. I did not expect so many FUNNY parts. I feel like I was either grinning goofily or laughing out loud in multiple parts. And don’t even get me started on their chemistry. There was such depth and romance throughout this book. I think I highlighted a majority of the book because of so many lines and quotes I loved but I’m going to leave you with this one,

“…and I feel the swirl of love within my stomach. The gritty kind of love. The one that’s going to love this woman even when we no longer look like ourselves from the weathering of age.”

Yep, it’s amazing.

(There is an excellent content warning at the beginning of the book but I’ll say, it’s closed door with a mild fade to black scene of a married couple. There is talk of grief and loss.)

I have started this review more times than I care to admit, but I cannot take these amazing, complex characters and summarize their lives. So if you are looking for a book blurb, go read the book blurb, then come back.

Okay, my turn…this story of loss and love and healing and pastries gutted me! Sparrow’s guarded heart, Rafe’s hidden hurt, the pastries, the music, the small-town fall atmosphere, the supportive friends (both guys and gals), the wanderlust, pizza in the studio, flour fights, Chapter 20, hometown found family, all of it.
I. Want. It. All.

I love the way these two fall in love. It’s a gentle slide into the most beautiful kind of FULL love! It is not rushed, it is not forced. There is a natural sweetness and slowness to their story that took my heart and put it in the microwave.

I absolutely adore this book! It was my privilege to be the editor for this beautiful story of love, healing, and the magic of autumn romance in New England. Sara North's writing is pure poetry. Her descriptive prose will make you want to curl up in a cozy chair, sipping Americanos and savoring maple croissants while you read of two people finding each other just when they needed it most. Rafe and Sparrow are two of the purest souls you'll ever find in literature. And Lily--there's never been a better friend!

As a hopeless Francophile, the French influence on this book is pure delight. It merges perfectly a longing for the grace and heritage of France while honoring the influence of the independent American spirit.

If you are looking for the perfect autumn romance to warm your heart through the long, chilly nights, I Love You in French needs to be at the top of your list!

If you love Gilmore Girls, a swoony male lead who falls first, French pastries that Paul Hollywood would give a handshake for, realistic stories of two healing people falling in love, and a small town that becomes a character in itself - READ THIS BOOK.

You know the saying about looking for someone who complements you instead of someone who completes you? That’s what Sparrow and Rafe find in each other when they weren’t even looking. Two independent people who are doing their best to heal and move on from some tough life situations - strong and capable on their own, but realizing they might need each other. I love the way these characters care so deeply about helping the other heal, and the journey they take to learn to help themselves along the way. SO MUCH HEART and so many giggles.

What starts with, “I just want to go to Paris and fall in love with a Frenchman. Is that really too much to ask?” eventually becomes, “I’ll think about the ways I moved through fear and how he moved through fear for me.” Along the way you’ll laugh and cry and kick your feet and giggle (just me?), but you’ll also feel seen and maybe even heal a little yourself…

To keep this review short and sweet like me (haha), all I’ll say is that reading this book felt like being wrapped up in a warm, sugary cinnamon roll, and that Rafe’s rugged tenderness matched so well with Sparrow’s soft and lively character.
I honestly don’t have too much else to say say besides that this was a savoury, sweet, and delightfully autumnal debut novel by Sara North.

I feel the heart in this story. It draws me in. It makes me feel why romance is something that takes us to a new level of being if we’re lucky enough to find it in its truest form. I love Sparrow and Rafe. I love the concept of “fake dating” to see what Sparrow wants, only to discover what she needs right in front of her. I understand her why. This makes me feel the story at a greater depth. We get swept away. It is a hard book to put down. This is what a well-told story does.

This was a very cute romcom!
I’m sad to give it three stars and here are some of my reasonings:
First off there were some slang cuss words as well as cuss words sprinkled throughout the book that didn’t need to be in there.
Secondly the romance is pretty heavy and although it’s a “clean read” there was A LOT of details given which is great for a romcom It’s just that this isn’t a book I would recommend to people.

I did love the characters so much and the best friends were awesome and Gladys was hilarious! 😂

Oh this book…it’s all things fall, baked goods, and romance. What is there not to love? I have to applaud @authorsaranorth for writing such a beautiful book (and it’s her first one😱). The details were beautiful, making me wish I was really there. I absolutely loved Sparrow and Rafe. Both of them had such meaningful pasts that were relatable. I enjoyed watching them experience healing and the deep love that everyone deserves. This book features two of my favorite tropes: fake dating & he falls first. It was such a perfect fall read!

This is genuinely one of the sweetest books I’ve read! Full of so much LIFE. The love and healing and journey of the characters kept me captivated the whole time. A sweet story of love, loss, healing and loving fully

Parts of this story were hard to enjoy a the main characters let fear and grief limit their lives and choices. It was very satisfying to see the development of the characters and their relationship, the healing and the HEA. Such a cute story.
