A well written series for ages 9-12 that will never be appreciated by that age group. For one thing, the language is more complicated than the popular Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries and Middle School series. Another thing, there's a lot more depth involved here. And the other thing is, the first couple of chapters start out a little slow, whereas you learn more about the characters that make up "The Baker Street Irregulars". When compared with the more popular series I mentioned, I'm not sure if it can hold the interest long enough for the kid to get truly involved in the story. I think it's a shame because not only is there so much more depth in this series of only three books. It's also a history lesson as well as a good way for a kid to "cut his/her teeth" on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, especially if one is concerned about their kid reading about Holmes' drug habit at too young of an age. (I'm happy to report that isn't in there at all.) The last book in this series was published four years ago, so I'm not hopeful that this one will continue. But at least there are three truly great books. There are even translations in the back for the slang used in the book, as well as descriptions for the different types of carriages that were referred to in the story.

This is a children's book and I guess my inner child has already grown up too much for me to enjoy it. As a kid, I might've gobbled it up with a spoon. But now? Two things really bothered me: a) didn't like any of the Irregulars and b) Watson was portrayed as an unlikable fool which is a pet peeve of mine.

Regarding a: The only kid that was fleshed out was Ozzie. But he talked like a scholar and was more knowledgeable than Watson and in some instances even Holmes. A kid of 12 years? He was basically a miniature Sherlock Holmes. And then there was Pilar, the gypsy Mary-Sue, who knew how to do everything, from driving a coach to lip-reading, I kid you not! And she was, what? 10? 11? If you have to shoe-horn a girl in, don't make it so obvious, writer.

Regarding b: What is it with the Sherlock Holmes tie-in writers and their bashing of Watson? Every one of the authors who bring in their own creations or focus on a different character, not Holmes and Watson, does it at the expense of Watson. I've read quite a few Sherlock Holmes tie-ins so I know what I'm talking about. Here, Watson was nearly invisible and when he was there, he was dumb as a brick and cranky to boot. Sherlock Holmes even confided in the children instead of Watson, for Christ's sake!

To sum it up: Dear writer, there are other ways to make your characters shine, you don't have to dumb down the original author's creations. If you don't plan on keeping the existing characters true to themselves, write original stories.

So… this was available for free at a scholastic book fair, and I thought it was a real Sherlock Holmes book and not a… whatever this is…. a modern(ish) spin off that takes place in the Sherlock Holmes world (I guess?)

Anyway, it seems somewhat interesting but it wasn’t totally grabbing my attention and it definitely wasn’t grabbing my son’s attention, so I decided to take the opportunity to teach my offspring a very important lesson- how to DNF. I asked him if he wanted to DNF this book and he said “what’s DNF?” And I explained.

He said YES without a shred of remorse or guilt, and I felt so proud (and a little in awe) of him at that moment.

TLDR: DNF

Fun! Mack and Citrin take the few references to the urchins who occasionally help Holmes in his cases, and have created living, breathing boys with compelling back stories.

Ozzie's mother recently died and she secured an apprentice position for him that she hopes will be advantageous. Unfortunately, his master is a forger, and Ozzie's talents have made him invaluable. Wiggins, even tho he is the leader, is so lonely...he has memories only of the orphanage he escaped. His pet ferret, Shirley, helps some. Rohan, a recent immigrant, lost his father in a fishing accident, and he's just trying to survive. These are boys you care about...and want the best for.

Holmes has been brought in on two cases...something shadowy with the royal family, and the deaths of an entire circus tightrope-walking family. Of course they're related, and Holmes enlists the Irregulars as lookouts. These smart little men are too bright to stay in the background for long. At the circus, they meet Pilar, the daughter of the Fortune Teller, and she joins the group as well. In exasperation, Holmes pronounces her 'A little Irene Adler.'

There is a secret code within the printed words, one that leads to the next book.

A loving homage to the original, letting us truly know who these boys are.

Wiggins to moja miłość z oryginalnych książek (do spółki oczywiście z najpoczciwszym doktorem i jednym z błyskotliwszych inspektorów Scotland Yardu – Anthonym Hopkinsem), więc oczywiście nie mogło go tu zabraknąć. Ozzie, holmesowy pupilek przez swój całkiem nieźle kminiący móżdżek też mi się podoba :D

I loved this book! It was fun to read, and it reminded me of why I love Sherlock Holmes! I'm not sure the portrayal of Holmes was completely accurate (he was super dismissive of Pilar, which I don't think canon Holmes would be) and I didn't like the portrayal of Watson at all. But it was a fun story with cool characters!

I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan and have read all of the short stories and novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, so I know a thing or two about Holmes and his version of Victorian England. The Fall of the Amazing Zalindas does a good job of evoking Sir Arthur's style and of staying true to his vision of that time and place. The Macks make Holmes and Watson ring true, but they are not the stars of this story. For the first time, the Baker Street Irregulars, who appear in many Holmes mysteries and whom are vaguely outlined by Dr. Watson, are brought to the forefront. The only Irregular who is given a name in the works by Doyle is Wiggins as Holmes addresses him by name now and again. In this story,we meet the entire gang and get to know a few of them quite well. Wiggins is, of course, featured as he is the leader, but the story focuses more on a new member and on his growing friendship with someone he meets at the circus.

The story is fast paced and easy to read. It even has a glossary of terms and street slang in the back and a foreword and afterword that add to the educational value of the book. This isn't surprising since it is published by a division of National Scholastic. However, it isn't aimed at such a young reading group that it isn't worthwhile for an adult Sherlockian like myself. The book is even handsomely bound in hardcover that amazingly has a scene from the story printed on the actual cover itself as well as on the dust jacket. Something almost unheard of these days. It looks quite smart on my shelf next to my bound volumes of Sir Arthur's works. Something I can't really say for most of the Scholastic books I've read or seen.

Children who can read confidently on their own and even adult bookworms like me who are fans of mysteries and especially of Sir Arthur's unique vision of the Victorian era need to read this book.

I enjoyed this book so much the first time I read it that I immediately turned to the front page and read the entire thing again. I have long been a Sherlock Holmes fan, and this felt true to the time, as well as being an interesting mystery.

That was back in 2011, though, and ten years later, I'm not quite as fond of it. Still a good book and a good mystery, but the author is clearly not keen on Watson, and as Watson is my favourite, I'm docking a star.

The title of this book is actually, "Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars"...book 1. It is a Sherlock Holmes mystery, but really is focused around several homeless boys and how they help Holmes solve a crime.

I enjoyed reading this, ifn only to see another perspective to the Sherlock Holmes books.
However, I did not like at all John Watson's portrait.
I did like the Circus bits and I wish the story was more developed in that point.

Good Mystery Book~!!

But the thing is I don't like the part when Ozzie tell friends that he is working on it,and he know the killer. That's just a luck.I was expecting for something that Sherlock Holmes would figured out!

Finished this one in one sitting. A well done mystery for kids that adult Holmes buffs will enjoy as well.

Was a little sad to see Watson treated so shabbily, but the story, characters, and settings were really well done.

Really 2.5 stars.

I'm definitely not the intended target age for this book so I can't attest to its viability in that area but, imo, it's still weak overall.

My biggest gripe with it is that it dumbs down both Sherlock and Watson, and throws the latter under the bus multiple times to raise up the Irregulars (a perfect example found within the preface). The mystery, as well, is simple and boring and the fact that Ozzie is basically a child Sherlock really makes you question why Sherlock is there at all. Ozzie and the other Irregulars seem to be perfectly capable of solving mysteries on their own so his involvement seems more like an easy way to draw in readers than to be an integral part of the book.

Another problem I have with it is the writing. For a book aimed at young readers, some of the words used are way beyond the reading level. Another issue I have is that there were several tangents where the paragraph (or chapter) would start on one topic but then spiral into a story about one of the kids for several pages which would force the writers to have to revisit the topic later on to actually deal with it. I get the purpose of establishing the characters so the readers can feel more attached to them but there had to have been a better way to go about it that wasn't so jarring and slow.

That being said, the book is not all bad. The twist at the end was actually well done and by far the best part of the book. I also appreciated that, though the authors seem to have some sort of problem with Watson, they didn't write Sherlock as having an issue with him (which would've been very out of character lbr, but then again there are a few OOC moments from him within the book so *shrug*). Something else I appreciated though was that (at least the version of the book I have), there were extras tidbits of info included about how to deduce like Sherlock and Victorian life, which is something I would've ate up as a child.

Anyways, maybe a child on the young side of the intended age-range who likes Sherlock/mysteries would enjoy this, but I find it hard to believe that a 12 or 13-year-old would.

Ok, where do I start....

The lost boys idea was promising, but for some reason only 3 had a little bit of character development. I really can’t understand why would you create a gang with 12 kids if you’re only going to say their names.

Sherlock Holmes is a scum bag. It’s ok when he’s a scum bag with adults, as in the original books, but he’s like that with kids. I mean, they literally eat RATS when they’re not working for him. There’s got to be something wrong with this dynamic. The least he could do, since he’s employing illegal kids, is provide for them, right?

WHY AREN’T THERE ANY LOST GIRLS? It’s victorian England, but I’m sure there must’ve been SOME orphan girls during this time.

Pilar is way better than everyone else in this book, including Sherlock Holmes. She has some creepy gipsy powers who were never developed and outmatches everyone and everything. Still, underdeveloped, I’m sorry to say.

Before I continue, I’m aware this is a series, so I’m not going to comment the unfinished plot about Ozzie’s father, but I’m still going to question WHY, in a 2006 book co-written by a woman, I had to read this sentence:

“Holmes smiled at Pilar. ‘Your confidence and ability make you and asset on any surveillance. I have never found so useful a person of your sex.’”

AND THE WORST PART IS THAT SHE TRIED TO CONCEAL HER HAPPINESS. The icing on this cake is that Holmes calls her “señorita”, because she is from hispanic descent. I mean.... what the fuck? People were terrible to women in victorian England, but you really didn’t have to make it that way in your children’s book. Tomorrow is international women’s day, people, I did not deserve that right now.

To finish this amazing review I add that, after the 4 boys (not the 12) and Pilar solve all this shit by themselves, Holmes gives them some cash, tells Ozzie that the man who gave him shelter (a horrible man, but still, shelter) was arrested and now he would be a happy homeless that would work for him for some coins once in a while and eat some rats! Yay!!! Happy endings, guys!!!!

#SherlockHolmes and the #BakerStreetIrregulars (Book 1): The Fall of the Amazing Zalindas by #TracyMack and #MichaelCitrin 🔍

Believe it or not, this is my first reading piece about Sherlock Holmes. I used to love mystery stories when I was a kid but I leaned more into fantasy in my teens so this book, although still for kids, the genre and themes are very new to me.

It's a found family trope.about young kids who had rough childhood in late 1800s England, a first to me as a setting. Expanding upon the original work is actually one of my interest. Laying out each boy's backgrounds were adorable and tragic at the same time.

I had to suspend my disbelief that a proper investigation of the police wasn't done and they have to resort to the #Irregulars for intel. Honestly, the police may have handled this but I can't see any justifications from the story. The characters just did what they did to feel like the irregulars are onto something.

The climax, a bit underwhelming and the mystery reveal, quite telling. However, the last few chapters piqued my interest. I actually am more curious about Ozzie, our main new Irregular character, his skills and backstory than the myatery itself.

The added information at the end of the book are also worth reading.

I haven't ready any Holmes fiction so I cannot compare this to the "main" ones, especially with the characterizations. I know the writers tried to make the young characters appeal to the audience, they frequently do and say things quite surprising for their age. I had to suspend my disbelief on those parts.

The premise has a lot of potential. I've heard, there's even TV shows that told the perspectives of the Baker Street Irregulars. They're good characters that could be used for boys to read more if they're into mysteries and adventure.

I'm intrigued for the next books in the series. Unfortunately, they are rare to find.

I really thought that I'd enjoy this book, but I ended up really dragging my feet through the entire thing. I have no idea why. Usually, I love mysteries and Sherlock Holmes, but this book just did not do it for me.

I think the main problem was that I didn't feel enough suspense driving the mystery forward. These acrobatic people have died...Holmes is going to solve the mystery....why should we care? I didn't feel any connection to what was happening, and there was not enough going on to make me move forward.

There was very little of the story that actually involved Holmes. He popped in and out a couple of times, but the Baker Street Irregulars are mostly seen as the main heroes. When Holmes does come in, it is only to inform us readers as to what's really going on in the mystery (as the Irregulars, despite being good at investigation, appear to not be able to conclude their own hypotheses, except for Ozzie, who is like a junior Holmes. Perhaps Holmes will turn out to be the boy's long-lost father.)

The boys themselves were okay, but I didn't feel any super strong connections to them. Again, although they don't seem to be doing much (after all, they're just typical 10-12 y/o boys compared to Sherlock Holmes...), they make up the major part of the story. I also found it doubtful that Dr. Watson would treat them the way he did.

Swearing: None

Sexual content: None

Violence: None

Religious/spiritual/magical content: The boys visit the fortune teller's tent at the circus and all have their fortunes told.

Misteri Kematian Bintang Sirkus (Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars #1)

Penulis: Tracy Mack dan Michael Citrin

Penerbit: Qanita

ISBN: 978-602-8579-23-0

Jumlah Hal.: 308

Harga: Rp. 45000,-

Yes we can!

Happy reading… ^_^

I quite enjoyed this book. The writing style does not match that of ACD Holmes, but as it's a children's book, I'm okay with that. I found the mystery to be very interesting and although I was quite disappointed that the story wasn't told from Wiggins' perspective, I did quite like Ozzie.

I only have two problems with the story: One. Why does it seem that every Sherlock Holmes pastiche not told from Watson's perspective insist on making Watson out to be a mean or useless person? I always loved Holmes and Watson the same, so I don't know why he gets portrayed in this light.

Two. I also have a problem with pastiches including the mystical or supernatural as means of moving the story along when Holmes himself would never believe in such a thing. While this only appears in two scenes by way of a circus fortune teller, it's still written as legitimate and although Holmes himself is not involved in these scenes, the characters who are involved believe wholeheartedly in the fortunes.

Other than that, I quite enjoyed the book and will be continuing the series.

Disclaimer: It's hard for me to not like Sherlock related things.

So I enjoyed this one. It was a fun and easy read which is perfect for young adults. It's not super deep but i enjoyed the twists nonetheless. It was a good smooth ride.

Sadly, I'm not a huge fan of how the author (and the irregulars) seem to hate Watson. But what can we do, the title is literally "Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars" so all the focus is there.

I like the characters especially Wiggins, Alfie and Pilar, but I find Ozzie is a tad too "super". I get that he's sort of the main character so it should be expected, but i would like to dial it back a little.

All in all, it is a nice read. Not the absolute best, but enough to want to read the rest of the series.

A wonderful introduction to great the great detective Sherlock Holmes and his crew of underground boy detectives (the Baker Street Irregulars). A lot of background information helps the reader to deepen their understanding of 19th century London, slang, and spy technicalities. A well paced book will surely inspire many spy fanatics. The language and writing is a good introduction for elementary. Easy enough for 3rd graders and engaging for older readers. Good for OBOB.

The story about this particular Sherlock Holmes investigation case was savory and adequate, with twists and an unbelievable ending, this book was surely one of my favourite crime mysteries. The final twist about the Stewart Chronicle took my breath away, I was so transfixed with the circus and the Zalindas' case that I didn't even see twist coming.
Final remarks: Great book, I highly suggest this to young people who like to read crime or mystery books.

I've read a lot of books about Sherlock Holmes Baker Street Irregulars- the rag tag band of homeless boys- and enjoyed them very much. This wasn't one of them. For me the story just dragged. The story starts out with the fall to their death aerial acrobats the Zalindas but very little takes place at the circus after that. And the character that was the most interesting was the gypsy girl Pilar.

This book is absolutely fabulous for mystery readers. It has a lot of suspense, and always has you thinking about whats going to happen next. It's a must read for people who like Nancy Drew, The Boxcar Children and Encyclopedia Brown, and it's a fun book for everyone!
