Come, Lord Jesus: Timeless Homilies for Advent and Christmas
And so we begin the Advent season, the time of waiting and watching. Here is the single biggest challenge of this really to feel our need for a savior! We tend to domesticate Christ, reducing him to a guru, a teacher, a spiritual guide, a wise philosopher. But that does violence to the Gospel, which presents him not simply as teacher but as Savior. Jesus has rescued us, saved us, done something that we could never, even in principle, do for ourselves. Until we truly feel what it means to be lost and helpless, we will not appreciate who Jesus is and what he means.

217 books856 followersBishop Robert Emmet Barron is an acclaimed author, speaker, and theologian. He is the former Francis Cardinal George Professor of Faith and Culture at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago and also is the founder of Word On Fire (www.WordOnFire.org).
Bishop Barron is the creator and host of CATHOLICISM, a groundbreaking ten-part documentary series and study program about the Catholic faith. He is a passionate student of art, architecture, music and history, which he calls upon throughout his global travels in the making of the documentary.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1986 and has been a professor of systematic theology at the nation's largest Catholic seminary, the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary since 1992. He was visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame in 2002 and at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in 2007. He was also twice scholar in residence at the Pontifical North American College at the Vatican.
In addition, Fr. Barron lectures extensively in the United States and abroad. Cardinal Francis George calls Fr. Barron “one of the Church’s best messengers.
Fr. Barron was baptized at Queen of All Saints Basilica in Chicago and grew up at St. John of the Cross parish in Western Springs, Illinois.
WordOnFire.org - Fr. Barron's website launched in 1999 and currently draws over 1 million visitors a year from every continent. Fr. Barron posts weekly video clips, commentaries and radio sermons and offers an audio archive of over 500 homilies. Podcasts of his sermons are widely used by tens of thousands of visitors each month.

Recommended reading for anyone to reflect on the mystery of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ’s coming. ‘Come, Lord Jesus’ provides concise and easy-to-read homilies to pray and reflect upon during the Advent and Christmas season.
The book traverses the four short weeks of advent as well as Christmas Day and the Christmas season, so I’d implore the reader to read weekly to get the most out of it. Bishop Robert Barron’s writing style here is digestible for any layperson wanting to deeper their faith and understanding of how the Word became flesh.

Chesterton, reflecting on the Church’s depictions of the saints, noted that their open eyes “are frightfully alive . . . staring with a frantic intentness outward.” This is the amazement that seizes every Christian. We, like the shepherds, are called to have our eyes wide open in wonder at what God has done. (p. 123)

THOUGHT- PROVOKING SERMONS
This is a collection of Bishop Barron's Advent homilies. I found that each sermon left me with a deeper understanding of the scripture selection that begins each piece. Although written for Advent, I would recommend this book for good reading any time of the year.

The perfect little book for Advent. I love reading the words of Bishop Barron!

Bishop Barron gives us some thoughts on each of the parts of Advent in simple terms. It helped me prepare for Christmas and the Christmas season.
