The one place Mara thought her family would be safe threatens to become their tomb - or worse, while her husband must find a way to cross a hundred miles in a matter of days, or risk being trapped behind bars. Ripley's efforts to help the frail US government are successful - but for her and Deb both, their progress comes with dangerous drawbacks that may prove fatal if they aren't cautious.
A series of global earthquakes cascade across the world, their ferocity unmatched by any other natural disaster in human history. Cities are turned to rubble in moments, deep bunkers are sealed shut in an instant, tens of millions are dead in the first hours, and as aftershocks threaten to further destabilize what remains, those few who survived are forced to navigate a broken country.
On her Virginia homestead, Mara Padgett faces an impossible task: keeping her three children safe as food runs low and desperation runs high. Separated by hundreds of miles from his wife at their homestead, Logan barely survives a plane crash and takes a young orphan under his wing, but must soon choose between the child's welfare and quickly returning to his own family.
Meanwhile, Mara's sister Deb is one of the few to have survived the cataclysmic tremors triggered by the New Madrid fault line that left much of the East Coast in ruins. With nothing left for her in Memphis, she embarks on a perilous trek across the ruined landscape to join her sister in Virginia, though what she finds along the way will test her in ways she can never imagine.
In Washington, D.C., geologist Ripley Baxter is buried alive in the remains of the White House bunker, with the President presumed dead and no hope for rescue. She must summon the strength to free herself from the rubble or face a slow, agonizing death, but nothing has prepared her for the journey - and obstacles - she will face along the way.
Can't say enough about this post-apocalyptic series. Absolutely superb writing, with an excellent mix of characters to love and characters to loathe. Even Mara and Caroline, who got on my absolute last nerve in the first two books, have turned the corner for me in a positive way. Another point is the multiple POVS, with four separate settings (working towards coming together at the end, I assume) and the appropriate cliff-hangers to send you running to the next installment. The quality of the writing/editing can't be emphasized enough! Can hardly wait to finish this series so I can jump into the many others by these authors. Five thumbs up! 👍👍👍👍👍
A really enjoyable third part to this fast paced, action packed, high energy, post apocalyptic series! A really good continuation of the storyline, lots of interesting scenes overall a really great read! I do recommend & I will read the next part for sure!
Most of the plot remained largely the same from the last book. Logan is still plodding along with his notion of going to Texas and then home to Virginia, but at this rate he will still be on the road when the series ends. Deb and Renny are still plodding along, though they have met Kevin who seems like he might be interesting if given a chance. Mara and the kids are not quite plodding but under some threat and with a plan. It will be interesting to see how that works out. The most interesting is President Ordway, Thaddeus and Ripley. I rather like the President; he is a sharp, decent guy wanting to do the right thing and a refreshing change from a genre that tends to demonize the head of the country as incompetent and evil. There were also a few editing issues: Ripley spelled as Ripely and also nurses don't do residencies; doctors do that. There were some decent cliffhangers so book 4 will hopefully pick up a bit.
What a great series. The characters are moving on but staying with who they are becoming now that their world has been shattered. Decisions are based on what they believed in and still do. Morality in the worst of times is hard to maintain. Some slip but others pick up the pieces and move forward. Can't wait to read the next book. Looks like a long night tonight!
Book 3 of a series. Once I started this book, I could not put it down. My only problem is waiting for the next book. The plot line is amazing. The characters are believable. It is just one amazing book. As I said, in the last review of the last book, go back to the first one and enjoy the ride.
I cannot believe that anyone would consider his family less important than a child that might not even have a parent left. Take the child to his family and when possible take the child to his father. After making sure your family is safe. Due to this I have stopped reading this series.
Love the characters, the storyline- EVERYTHING. I don't want this series to ever end. I feel like I know everyone and am invested in everything they say and do.
This book didn't seem as strong as the other two. I wasn't as engaged. I didn't like the turn Logan's story took. I won't go into detail, but said "you're kidding!" when he made the choice.
The group with the army continue their trip toward the border, Back home other want to take the farm the family needs a new home. And The President find a science advisor and gives hope to some. Waiting for book four.
Earthquakes are destroying the world and she had been helping the government. Things may get worse but will they get any better. Life is going to take a dangerous turn for them all. How will it all go? Can they all survive the danger ahead? See how they get on
What an awesome story of chaos, danger everywhere. Earthquakes happening all over. How will anybody survive this. Gripping all the way to the last word. Absolutely loved everything about it and ready for the next.
Fast. Paced..great characters.. Breath taking. Suspenseful moments. Have to make myself take breaks..Wish they would make tv series out of it,and no.foul language needed!!
