When not practicing hobbies which include sailing, constructing medieval armor, and swinging swords at his friends, Kevin McLaughlin can usually be found in his Boston home. Kevin’s award-winning short fiction is now available in digital form at all major ebook retailers. He writes fantasy in settings both historical and contemporary, and science fiction in both the near and distant future.
Kevin and Michael quite obviously make an incredible team. And this story is no exception. They have clearly hit their stride moving into this second book, with all the requisite style and nail-biting tension we have come to expect from them.
The only catch to all this is one that I am personally not bothered by in the slightest. However, if I were a huge aficionado of the LITRPG genre I might be a bit miffed. This is because the LITRPG elements seem to be almost insidental. As if the whole story had been conceived, written and finished when someone thought, “Hey, this might make good LITRPG!” and then just sprinkled the necessary words here and there. The main character even ruminates at one point over how he’s simply ignored that aspect of this world in which he’s found himself.
Like I said, that’s not an issue for me, since I’m really not a huge fan of the genre. The story, however, and the characters are all flat out engaging and compelling. So I think that even major fans of LITRPG will not find anything to complain about in the face of writing this well done.
Congratulations to Kevin McLaughlin and Michael Anderle for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and exciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories.
The characters are great, there is action, magic, a bit of engineering along the way. Aliens out to destroy the world, it has all sorts of fun bits in it. I am glad there are more books planned in this series as these characters have more adventures to go to on yet. I recommend this book and series.
Fairly short book and simple story. I do not think that the author is leverging the abilities of the MC. He comes in as an engineer but for the most part it's just a warrior. A little bit of backstory added to some of the secondary characters that was good. But... Not sure I'll be reading anymore of these when they come out.
Good characters both good and villainous. An interesting premise of being somehow being transported to a different dimension where the hero's knowledge of modern engineering can help the people where he ended up in a feudal society which has magic. The story is fast paced with plenty of action and humor.I look forward to reading more of these stories
