[Last time in Multiverse Z!] A Shade Dragon Rogue stirs up trouble with the biggest bounty hunt on his head.
Joey's new apocalypse life integrated and initialized by the multiverse system turned him into a Great Adventurer, which came with no tutorials. Now he's on a quest to help a war princess gather adventurers for an epic boss raid. And to secure some achievements for a secret reward.
Joey offers a time-sensitive quest at the adventurer a 'catch me if you can' -style manhunt with himself as the target. It's a hunt that's broadcasted across his new home, a mystical game-like realm. A place filled with beginner adventurers, great and steady, who’ll gather to win the coin placed on Joey’s head.
As Joey creates more chaos to draw the best adventurers together, his bounty rises higher. As the bounty hunters pursue, Joey and his friends race north to investigate a mysterious operation at a ruined temple. It contains clues involving devils and dungeons, two puzzles nobody has solved in thousands of years.
This could further level up Joey's overpowered profile filled with shadow, necromancy, and dragon magic.
Follow Joey in the continuation of an apocalypse isekai story with strong progression and LitRPG elements. He’ll explore an ancient temple, face off against monster hordes, and fight an organization of haters. He’ll search for lost dungeons and overcome devilish mysteries while being chased by thousands of adventurers desperate to capture or kill the Shade Dragon Rogue. This may lead to Joey's evolution, where he'll gain more magical powers and acquire new skill upgrades. As long as he can survive crushing challenges that aren't meant to be faced solo.
This is second in an isekai LitRPG and you definitely want to read in order. Seriously.
So you know what you are getting—including a crappy race-burying cover that has been updated on Amazon but not GoodReads. Joey starts off being hunted by, well, everybody except his buddies. But we knew that from the ending of the previous book. Only, the author isn't one to sit on anything like the expected and it doesn't take long for Joey to jump into a cauldron too many and find himself in hot water.
And I say this with admiration because the story is crazy-pants in the best way. By which I mean with a spanking pace and the occasional stand out secondary character to serve as contrast and respite. So the power fantasy continues and the story is gripping and I found myself fully engaged to the end.
I'm going to give this another five stars, though it had the same weaknesses as the first book (some story developments just have to be taken in stride and the craft note I'll add below). If you liked the first, it's a good bet you'll like this one, too. I'm definitely going to pick up the next just to see what Joey comes up with now that he's going after a whole dungeon on his own.
A note about craft: A good editor would raise this book to the next level, quality-wise. Seriously. Misused words, dropped words, all things that an editor is made to find and improve. And the author would learn along the way if they're at all interested in building their skills.
A note about Chaste: Maylolee is still the only real romantic possibility and she's back in Siren City waiting for Joey to deliver on the main questline. So this is very chaste.
While the execution was strong, setting the entirety of Book 2 within a pocket universe is just a narrative shortcut. It's an odd move early in the series, and it conveniently sidesteps the complexities of the main plot. I don't think any book should so quickly abandon the main plot for a break - if Joey needed to get stronger, it should not have happened nearly randomly and conveniently isolated.
This is the second book about a warrior pretending to be a rogue. There is nothing subtle about this MC to imply he could ever be a rogue. The author hand waves any rogue behavior when he even attempts it. "He broke into one barrel and wriggled himself into the grain. Some of it got dumped out, but not that much".
We finally have the opportunity to see him infiltrate the enemy forces and that is all we get. I finished this book but will not be continuing the series.
It's not perfect, but it's a fun world. Lots to discover and a lot of backstories and history to dig up. Descriptive where necessary and not overly wordy keeping these books to under 500 pages on my kindle. World's like this are fun I always find myself wondering, if I got tossed into something like this what would I do. I don't even know which animal I would have said, dog maybe, even though I'm a fan of dragons I probably wouldn't have thought to even name them 🤣. But it'll be interesting to see how Joey escapes the sh*t storm he has made
He has no stealth, sneak, or thief like abilities, he has no backstab/ambush abilities, he has no particular dodge abilities (besides rolling with the punches, but think it is a general skill), no concealment/distract/deception skills. HE IS NOT A ROGUE.
It’s hard to care about dungeon citizens as people, as they are more like NPC’s, they are artificial — any storyline within this enviornment feels insignificant.
I’m also not convinced that he is combat skilled yet, out of tens of thousands of adventurers, one would believe many of them to max out a basic fighting weapon skills. Buuut, he haven’t really dueled many yet, but author attempts to make him seem like he’s a combat talent.
Did not enjoy this book much.
Maybe he switches out a skill to a rogue skill at 100, sighhh, why even call it rogue ascension
In book two we have Joey once again adventuring, but with a twist. He connected with a dragon spirit in book one and now people are ominously talking about the 'dragon's price'. He will soon come to find out what that means.
Meanwhile, he sets a bounty on himself once he's reached land in hopes of meeting a quest set by the war princess. The bounty quickly escalates, and he keeps escaping by the skin of his teeth. He discovers what part demons play in this world, and he enters a dungeon with a number of questlines.
Both book one and two are a lot of fun. The action is fast, and that keeps the story ever moving forward. He does have a level of snark that may or may not annoy certain people, but for me it was fine. The editing is okay but because the story moves so quickly I didn't care as much as I might have.
Rogue, Ascension, good book, fast paced, uses the MC‘s name in the book entirely too much
A well crafted fast pace story. Likable main character. The only issue I find in this book is that the author uses the name Joey way too much. The RPG elements are good, the character may be a little overpowered in some peoples opinion, but not mine. We’ll go on and read the next book in the series. The story is good, because personally, I do not care for the rogue character when I play RPG’s that’s how engrossing the story is.
Joey's having a time trying to beat the dungeon within the dungeon. His challenges keep building while he keeps getting stronger. Outside the dungeon awates an army of adventures waiting for Joey to emerge from the 2nd dungeon to capture or kill him for the bounty that is continuing to rise in the inevitable outcome. Joey is still fighting to become stronger, but he is also fighting internal problems from his past and how its effecting his current abilities.
Did I think the first book was pretty bad? Yes. Did I decide to read the second one knowing full well that it would also be a disaster? Yep. It remains an awkward power fantasy but now the growth has gotten just completely silly and the plot and world building are no longer interesting enough to keep me interested. I was hoping the writing would improve as the series went on but now I'm just bored.
Readers (and listeners) crack me up in their desperate need to immediately like or fall in love with MC's. "He's an edge lord and too teenage boyish!" That's the fucking point you dumb morons. Who wants a story that has no room for character growth? Sometimes characters are even meant to be unlikable, you know, because the fucking story depends on it! Sheesh. Really good follow up book, looking forward to book 3 👍🏽👍🏽
The pacing is fast, but other developments were uneven for me. Joey goes through a major change halfway through the book, and the resolution wasn't particularly satisfying. I'm just glad that Joey is still himself.
If I read the next book, it'll be for Maylolee, and the resolution of her part of the plot. I want to see her succeed.
(The muderhobo stuff is getting tiresome. Joey gets back to more Roguish tactics, but not soon enough to save his story for me.)
Rogue Ascension book 2 is a very good second in series book. I liked possibly slightly more than the first one, so I hope that means that even better things are in store for book 3 and beyond. Highly recommended.
Another tipsy turvy shade in a box adventure... Great job mixing action with emotional and character development.. Great read.. Highly recommend JD Glasscock Author of the Series Blood Brothers and the Dream
I waited with reading book 1 until book 2 was released, so I could read them back-to-back. Unfortunately, book 2 was not as good as book 1, still enjoyable but just not as good. I will read book 3 and hope it's up to the standard of book 1.
I've recently developed a love for LiRPG books, Rogue Ascension is definitely up there as one of my most beloved and most look forward to books, can't wait to read book 3 (which I will start tonight despite needing to go to bed), they're that good.
This story of a guy choosing the Nightmare start to the integration of peeps from Earth to the System Multiverse was fantastic. In this episode he’s just getting ready to finish his dungeon crawl to go fight the boss.
Leaving Joey isolated and contemplating was a choice. Not a good choice. This volume has the violence of the first, but lacks the fun and the character dynamics. Which is bad, since the characters aren't developed enough to support the entire story.
Gonna be honest, MC’s personality and approach is not super relatable to me, but these books are fun to read anyway and you get taken for a ride. Moving to the next immediately.
Joey's story continues, just as he also proceeds to grow more and more powerful. This book revealed a little more of the worldbuilding and also raised the stakes a little bit. Lots of fun!
Powerfully delivered and masterfully set up to take the reader on a ride with the highest of highs and the most introspective of lows. This adventure is a delight to read and impossible to put down. Thank you!
This book and the first one were so u nexpected. I am enjoying them immensely! I hope that more people can read the, and that the author continues! This is a Greg adventure to read. Thanks
I have read alot of books in this genre and I have to say this is growing on me. The wait and suspense to see what happens to Joey next is amazing. Can't wait to read the next one 🤙
Not as polished as the first book but still good enough to continue. Really hoping that the next book doesn’t drop in quality again or these reviews certainly will.
Don't get me wrong I liked book one but book two fixed the problems I had with the first book. I'll get the third shortly after I finish this review. This time the character chose to do things that just fit in place. Everything seemed to be as it should be.
I enjoyed it. The main character “Joey” was decently challenged and pushed to grow along the way. This series tends to to grow their characters a little slower than I’ve seen elsewhere but that’s fine. The skills earned are different and interesting.
I just read book 2 & I'm loving it so far. This story grasped my attention quicker then my past reads. I am looking forward to Joey's adventuring journey & where it leads him in this new fanstasy world.
Great continuation of the story. Our hero continues to grow and learn more about himself, his powers and his role in the Multiverse. I’m enjoying this series and recommend it for fans of litrpg.
Put the book down for a bit and just never came back to it. The writing was a little too unsophisticated for my taste I think. Maybe it’s a reading age/level thing? Don’t really know.
