It’s been a good long while since a book has made me feel all the feels that this book has. I just feel warm and cozy inside.
I ate this book up. I could not put it down. I was hooked from the very first page right til the very end. The characters, the setting, the story, the spice, everything was on point.
“ You’re it for me. Endgame. You’re more than enough, and I never want to try and change you. You’re perfect exactly as you are and I can only hope to be good enough for you because I don’t think I am, but I want to be. I want to be your safe place in this world. I want us to be forever. “
Dante Carter is my new book boyfriend. That man is perfect. The way he cares for Mila is on a whole other level. He’s tough and protective yet nurturing, patient and attentive and I just love him so much 🥺🤍
This was a beautiful love story and an amazing debut novel. I will be recommending it to everyone I know and Im so beyond excited for book 2 and 3 😍 I’m so blessed to have received this ARC copy from the very talented K.Wish
Wow this book was so good! Hooked me right from the get go and didn’t let up! I’ve been seeing this around on Bookstagram and I love supporting kiwi authors so knew I had to give this a read.
This books starts with Mila running from her abusive partner, and being rescued by Dante after he finds her on the side of the road. When she’s cleared by the medical centre to leave, she goes with Dante to Hidden Valley for a fresh start. She’s got a lot of trauma to work through, but Dante proves to be a wonderful man who she feels safe and supported with. It also helps he and his friend Ace are ex-army, so she knows they’ll protect her if her ex comes knocking.
This is a wonderful slow-burn romance. I absolutely fell in love with all the characters, and the setting of Hidden Valley. It’s also quite humorous - there’s a scene where Ace has to get ‘women’s supplies’ for Mila and it had me cackling. Dante is such a sweetheart, even though he seems gruff on the outside. He listens to Mila, and when he picks up that she likes reading he buys her the whole 100 bestseller romance list (HELLO WHERE CAN I FIND A DANTE?!). Mila becomes friends with local Nova, who was also lovely, and her Beans and Pages coffee/bookshop sounds like a dream.
Overall a fabulous debut kiwi romance that I would highly recommend! I can’t wait for more books by this author ❤️ this is also available on KU which is great!
I’m sure this is for some people but it’s definitely not for me. Dnf’d at 50% because I had secondhand embarrassment for them and couldn’t take it anymore
Dialogue seemed to throw me off a bit. I felt the dialogue was way too far removed from how the characters acted within their own inner monologue. A bit cliche but I used it as a gap filler for when I could find nothing else to read.
This book had me from the get go, it hooked me instantly and never let go until the very end.
I loved everything from the writing style to the character development and growth, the plot was 👩🍳💋
A story that addresses some of the dark sides of humanity and the true ugliness that can exist, but also shines light on the positives and the strength of both spirit and body in overcoming what might try to tear us down.
A lesson in believing the good in people but learning to recognise and accept that when people show you who they are it's ok to take care of yourself. To be your own hero. And one day let someone else help as well
I was lucky enough to recieve an ARC of this lovely, fast-paced book. I very much enjoyed it and can highly recommend.
The FMC, Mila, gets out of very rough and traumatising relationship and ends up in a beautiful picturesque small town in the mountains. On her journey she is literally saved by a very tall night in tattooed armer, Dante (MMC). Dante is a lovely mix of golden retriever and touch-her-and-die.. *chefs kiss*. Together they are starting a new life.
The story is easy to follow and I couldn‘t put it down. The spice is really good.. the truck scene.. will be replaying that in my mind for a while😉. I laughed, I cried… what more can you want from a romance novel.
All in all really enjoyed the book and can‘t wait to see what the next book brings.
I like the premise of this book, and to be very fair, this is K. Wish's debut book. I've got some pros and cons:
PROS: - It's obvious immediately that Wish poured their heart into this book. The concepts are relatable and belivable. - The premise of the book is hard-hitting and poignant - a woman escaping her abü$er and finding peace, love, and freedom. - The story itself drew me in and kept my attention. The story is dynamic and interesting, and it made me want to love this book.
Now for the CONS: - The writing was underdeveloped and stilted, and reads somewhat patronizingly. Concepts that could be demonstrated through the characters' actions and dialogue are instead overexplained as internal monologue without a lot of follow-through. This was the main reason I DNF'd. - Because of the writing style, I did not connect to the characters. While their personalities were explained in detail, they ultimately felt one-dimensional and lacking in depth. - The dialogue between characters is also underdeveloped and stilted. The characters overexplain themselves and speak very formally. This resulted in the character interactions also falling flat and feeling superficial to me.
Overall, I can see the direction this book was going, and I liked the concept. I needed more development and less explaining; "show me, don't just tell me" is the phrase that comes to mind. I get the feeling that as K. Wish continues writing and developing their style, I will love future books. I appreciate the opportunity I had to review an Advanced Reader's Copy of this ebook.
I am blown away by this book. This is a darker but sweet romance. It is so beautifully written that I felt all the emotions. I was laughing and crying. I love the banter. It is very thrilling and suspenseful where I was on the edge of my seat.
Dante Carter is my new book boyfriend. He reminds me of my husband, so obviously, I adore this character. He's tall, tattooed, retired military, tough, and grumpy. Yet, he's open, honest, attentive, and caring. Best of all, he's a touch-her-and-die protector, dishes great dirty talk, and he's talented in the bedroom.
Mila is such a wonderfully done main character. She is quite relatable and loveable. Her growth in this story made me love her so much more. She is sunshine with a witty sense of humor I love.
The setting is a perfect small town, and I love how everyone becomes a family. The spice in this book is hot perfection. It is a slow burn, but this is such a well-paced story. I read it quickly. I did not want to put this book down.
I'm so excited to read her future books.
I highly recommend this book, but I recommend you check the trigger warnings first.
Small town romance.. with some dark themes.. protective MC.. and smut.. need I say more?
This book was just perfection👏🏼 I honestly couldn’t put it down and it instantly became a new comfort book for me! This is one of those books that I will reread each year because it was just ugh 👏🏼 no words! Even writing this now I’m anxious to read it again - if anyone asks me for a book recommendation , this is the book recommendation they will be getting!
This was the authors debut novel and she absolutely killed it!!!!! I seriously can’t wait for the second book 😍🤤
I did not know I would enjoy this book so much. It plans well from the beginning to the end. Slow to fast pace, from the low to the high emotionally, from constantly foreplay through the book, finally the orgasm hit so as mine. The author's sense of humor comes through in the novel. Jump in if you haven't done so. Well done K.Wish.
3.5⭐️ this is like if Reacher and Safe Haven with Julianne Hough was a book(minus the ghost of dead wife’s past) I really enjoyed myself while reading, but the characters were a little underwhelming. At times their dialogue was almost too perfect and a bit redundant. That being said I liked the writing style and am excited to see more from this author!
I’d seen a few of my fellow Kiwi friends mention K Wish and after seeing an IG book tropes post about this book, I couldn’t resist ignoring all my responsibilities and diving right in. Who needs sleep when you have a delicious new book to read??
This had all the makings to be a top read for me. Small town, romantic suspense, found family, and a dash of spice? I’m SOLD. Thankfully I was not disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed myself, devouring it all in just a few hours.
Everyone should want a Dante. The way he almost instantly fell for Mila was so freaking precious and I loved this stoic brooding military man with a squishy soft heart. Him and Mila balanced each other and it was lovely to see them both grow and understand more about themselves and each other. They both could definitely use a hefty dose of therapy though 😂
The found family they created gave me absolute warm fuzzy vibes. There was plenty of humour between the group and it countered the heavier content. Ace’s period rant for example had me absolutely cackling. I loved wild Nova and big bad teddy bear Ace and I cannot wait for their story. I’m also incredibly intrigued by Porter as well so I hope he gets his moment.
The suspense was great. It wasn’t too dark but it had a grittiness to it that made for a fun read. I still can’t believe what happened with Phil and Atilla though!!
Overall this was a really good start to the series. The setting was great, the characters were well meshed out, and there was plenty of banter and teasing to lighten the darker sides of things. I honestly can’t wait for more visits to Hidden Valley!
A wonderful, fast paced, easy to read, captivating love story.
Im not always a fan of insta-love but these guys were perfect for each other and NEEDED each other. When you know you know. Beautifully written quick love between MCs that are meant to be. They show each other what it's like to be unconditionally loved and what it means when home is a person and I was swooning.
Dante is the book boyfriend of dreams with the perfect mix of touch her and die protectiveness and gentle, patient and considerate golden retriever but with a past that makes him second guess his worth. Mila is a resilient, strong , brave FMC whos been through some shit and deserves the world. Together they fight for their fresh start.
This story had all the things I love in a romance - small town - he falls first - slow burn and tension - age gap -protector -spice - the epilogue I'm telling you is to die for. - humor and banter
But also some balanced, gripping, darker and supsensfully aspects that kept me on the edge of my seat. ( read trigger warnings).
Be prepared to laugh and cry.
The side characters are well developed, loveable and intriguing and I'd love to read their stories too.
I devoured this book in a day and it was a great debut novel by a wonderful fellow kiwi :)
This is K. wish’s debut novel, and she did not disappoint!
Mila has finally left her abusive ex and decides to start over. Where? No clue. But she’s free. She just wants a fresh start and wants it on her terms. Dante has finally taken the plunge to retire from his military career. He plans to start over in a small town with his friend. A turn of fate brings him and Mila together, but not together, together. 🙂 Each of them has to decide if they can live the life they want, a life on their terms and forgive themselves for choices made in the past.
Just. WOW. To say I loved this is an understatement. I love Mila’s growth in this book. I think her story will resonate with a lot of readers. She’s such a breath of fresh air in the realms of FMCs. And Dante? Well. He’s what we all want. A protective, ex military, filthy mouthed man. But he is also a breath of fresh air. He’s not emotionally challenged, he’s open and honest about things and not afraid to show it.
This story had me laughing in so many places and crying just as much. The setting, the friends (which I hope we get more of in the future) and the cozy vibes make this a fantastic read during the cold winter days.
Tropes: ❄️ he falls first ❄️small town ❄️age gap ❄️ex military ❄️determined FMC ❄️forced proximity ❄️one bed ❄️grumpy sunshine ❄️banter
If I ever needed saving I would want Dante to be the one to save me. The writing flowed really well and despite the heavy topics of domestic abuse and recovery Dante and Mila were such cute couple. Their attraction was instant and the spice was 🥵 This is purely my own preference but Dante was just a little bit too protective to a point of clingy for me.
Loved the small town snowy atmosphere, the two K9 and the side characters. Wonder if we will be getting an Ash and Nova book? Overall a really enjoyable fast paced read with some dark themes and a hint of suspense thrown in.
This is my first book by K. Wish. I struggle to read the cutesy small town romance. However, K. Wish wrote not only a small town romance but a dark small town romance, which is right up my alley!! This book was a good solid read. While it didn't have me in a choke hold, I absolutely loved the characters and their development. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series!
I did like this book. At times it was a bit cringe and I found it a lot when she just jumped from an extremely toxic relationship into trusting a guy she didn’t know… like girl, you are scaring me. But I did like when the story built with the suspense and overall we love a baddie who can save herself (with the help from her dog of course). I do look forward to seeing how the author’s writing continues to revolve in the next books she writes.

I hated how this begun! I just couldn’t wrap my head around how Mila suddenly trusted Dante after everything, like girl, go to therapy and heal. But on a rainy day, feeling miserable with a cold, this ended up being the exact distraction I needed. There were moments that felt predictable, and definitely a bit cringe at times, but I’m starting to accept that I must actually like cringe 🤷🏻♀️
LOOK. I heard the hype okay I did. BUT I WAS ABSOLUTELY SUCKED INTO THIS WORLD AND F*** ME K, I WANT ALL THESE CHARACTERS TO BE REAL - LESS FRIGGIN TREVOR OBVIOUSLY. It was so wholesome, it was funny, it was heartbreaking and it was spicy! Literally what else could you want!
Debut novel WHO - Girl you going places! Watch this space people!!!
This book was so sweet, Dante and Mila not fighting their love and just healing and existing made me wanna tear up, they’re so wholesome. I loved his protectiveness from the get go. i loved that Mila’s spirit was completely broken and she wasn’t afraid to allow someone to love her truly
2.75 ⭐️ So Dante was a walking red flag 🚩his possessiveness and jealousy was way too much to be considered caring or loving. His behaviour was toxic
Also why were they practically in love 20% of the way in when she had just run away from her abusive ex. I really wanted to love this one but unfortunately just doesn’t sit right with me.

From the first chapter, I knew I would enjoy this.
K Wish writes such a gripping heartfelt story about a survivor and a protector.
The character development, for all characters, not just the main characters, is so well done that you feel as though you have watched these characters grow before your eyes. It's almost like a Pokémon evolution.
I couldn't put it down. I needed to know if Mila would ever be safe and if Dante stuck to his word. There are triggers at the start of the book, and one trigger I knew was going to do me in but expecting it was actually helpful to be able to get through (I'm sure if you have read the trigger list you will know what what I am talking about). I was so engrossed in the story that I read it when I was in the car on the way to the inlaws and its only an 8 minute drive but I couldn't not use that time as passenger princess to ignore my SO and devour more of the book.
K. Wish, well done, loved it, can't wait to read the next one!!
The way this book went about was not what I expected at all. Very unrealistic scenarios and the characters had conflicting personalities. The FMC went thru some serious trauma with her abusive husband and then 5 minutes after meeting a stranger, she wants to get in his pants?! Make it make sense.
ARC review - In the cover of darkness by @kwishauthor 4.5⭐️ I'm so grateful to have received an advanced copy of this book -- The story is fast-paced, easy to follow, and has you routing for Mila from the very beginning. As Mila makes the snap decision to run from her abusive partner, she finds herself in need of a fresh start and some people to help along the way. Grumpy bear Dante takes one look at the girl unconscious in the snow and find his own fresh start, helping her to health and safety they both begin to find peace in Hidden Valley. Dante is the sweetest yet so dramatic at times i couldn't help but laugh at his protective nature, i hope we get to see more of Mila and Dantes' future in books to come! I love the found family aspect of this book as the small town really comes together to welcome them as family. Working in Novas bookstore sounds like my dream job, and I can't wait to get more Hidden Valley books, I already know I'm going to be obsessed with Porter!
Would definitely recommend this book, sweet, thrilling, and spicy all in one (the truck scene👀). I can't wait to read more from this new author!
Everything about this book works. For Wish’s debut book I am impressed. I am honored to be able to be part of the ARC readers and really enjoyed reading this story of Mila’s journey after an abusive ex. There were a few scenes that I was like “no, that wouldn’t happen to a survivor” then the next few pages would change my thoughts. I’ve been through an abusive relationship so I felt a kinship to Mila. Now… Dante, the man of my dreams (haha). There were times that I was like “now you’re acting like her ex” but then of course it was explained in the next few pages and he got his act together (nothing bad just possessive). I enjoyed that I had so many mixed feelings about the book because it kept me on my toes. I may have cried a few times. Also, THE DOG?! Really?! Ugh but I’m glad Atilla saved Mila. The truck scene will live in my head rent free forever. Thank you Wish.

Dark romance isn't normally my thing, and while I like the protector trope on it's own, I felt like this story was good but could have used a bit of additional TLC. My paperback copy had an odd kind of formatting that didn't fill the page, and there were enough typos/punctuation/grammatical errors that it kind of distracted from the story itself.
𝔹𝕠𝕠𝕜: In The Cover of Darkness 𝕊𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕖𝕤: Hidden Valley - book #1 ℝ𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 𝕊𝕡𝕚𝕔𝕖: 🌶️🌶️
Mila is running away from her abusive ex and when she thinks it's all over in the middle of nowhere, she unexpectedly crosses paths with Dante. He saves her life and shows Mila how valuable she is.
In the Cover of Darkness is a heartbreakingly beautiful story with characters and emotion completely consums you. Dante and Mila's story felt so natural so pure and u can feel every single emotion while reading it. I loved and enjoyed every single page i was captured from the beginning till the end and i couldn’t put this book down. Mila's character development, the bond, chemistry and the side characters were absolutely perfection. The spice was well written and the banter between Mila & Dante was so funny i laughed all the time and when Ace & Mila teased Dante about his name, it was priceless. 😂 At one scene i literally was sobbing but i don't want to spoil that, i can recommend this book, it was really good. All the morally gray, possessive, overprotective men are in Hidden Valley, that's for sure. 😉🤗😏
