He was born to a meager upbringing in a log cabin on the banks of the…kidding.

I wrote a children’s book banned for using the words butt and crack. I’ve roller-skated through a typhoon using a garbage bag as a sail and once electrocuting my sister with my favorite Christmas present.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies, an MBA from ITT Tech, and certifications in bioethics and world health from Harvard, but the most important things I’ve learned while sitting at the bedside of people who are dying.

I began my career as a hospice chaplain working in Southeast Ohio and spent years helping people reflect on life, confront their mortality, and embrace a savior who is waiting for all of us with open arms.

We all have a story we live out with sweet, tragic, funny, and profoundly moving parts. We have a story to be heard, a story to finish well, a story to understand. Much of my career has been helping people recognize the brilliant parts of their stories.

I’ve decided to be the guy who brings along a flashlight as people tell their stories. I want to spotlight the actual words written in bold on our inner framework by our Creator, words that somehow have been forgotten and gone unnoticed. God has written some big words inside us, etched them deeply into our being. Words, like forgiven and loved by our Creator, are our real bios.

I can tell you about my childhood, that I’m a military brat who has lived all over the world. I can tell you about how I’ve spent years in a Christian band and how I love to speak and entertain crowds and if you ask me about my daughter or my wife, get comfy.
I’m a longtime listener. I’m a forever storyteller and a writer shining a light on our internal design.

I hope you will enjoy my new book releasing in May 2022 "Eden Equipment".

Neighbor, Love Yourself is a refreshing transposition of the golden rule. As humans, we are best prepared to love each other when we fully accept and celebrate ourselves. In this book, Bryan Crum reminds readers that we are beautiful and worthy of the acceptance and love we freely give out to others.

Bryan’s book is filled to the brim with relatable stories and funny analogies that have the power to reshape the way we think about our life. In one of my personal favorites, Bryan uses the story of Stripey Bottom, his first book, a children’s book that was banned from his daughter’s school because of two bad words (“butt crack”), to illustrate the power bad words can have on our lives. In an accessible, humorous way, Bryan points out the importance of the narratives we tell ourselves and how two bad words can have a great deal of negative impact.

Many of the analogies used in the book center on the use of equipment. Flashlights, sawhorses, a check-engine light, and “quiet oil” all represent tools to help us live a fulfilling, satisfying life. These tools, Bryan argues, are intrinsic and built-in. We are not incomplete. The equipment we need comes standard-issue.

This review, however, would be incomplete without a nod of appreciation to the “doubt goat,” an animal who represents the times we doubt ourselves or our ability to realize our dreams. Bryan tells a hilarious story about an apartment building whose basement was previously inhabited by a goat. Long after the goat was gone, the smell remained. I won’t spoil the story here, but much like the goat’s smell did for Bryan, it will stick with me!

This book is a great read for anyone looking for an injection of positivity and encouragement. Bryan, who spent much of his career as a hospice chaplain (I know - not typically a job associated with positivity), possesses a profound ability to distill complicated and complex situations into simple and resonant lessons that highlight the beauty of being alive. He harnesses that ability in this book and accordingly, it will be one I return to many times over.

"Neighbor, Love Yourself" is a must read!

Throughout the journey of this book I felt a multitude of emotions including laughter, gratitude, inspiration, grief, hope, acceptance, joy, etc. (the list goes on)!

One of my (many) favorite quotes from this book was "remember that in your life's painting, belief is the primer. The more belief you have in your words the more effective they are at transforming the canvas." This resonated with me as I often struggle to have confidence in myself and my opinions. After completing this specific chapter, I was able to reflect and peel back the layers as to why I felt this way. This is just one example of how Bryan's post-chapter reflection questions have impacted me to learn more about myself.

Overall, I truly found "Neighbor, Love Yourself" to be a great step towards loving myself. This book has inspired me to "pick up the tempo" and make "an investment of time and energy and thoughtfulness."

My hope is that my fellow reader encourage their loved ones (the people at their "poker table") to read this book and reflect together.

A big shoutout to Bryan Crum for sharing his words of wisdom with the world.

Relatable and thought-provoking.

I had the honor of having Bryan speak to my family after my father passed away, so I was eager to read this book. Bryan Crum uses the same simple but effective language in his writing as he does when speaking to grieving families and he uses interesting anecdotes to make his points. I loved the hornet story!

I was especially drawn to the chapters about finding purpose because I am currently dealing with that in my own life. Bryan's end-of-chapter reflections were helpful in summing up the chapters, and the questions he posed invited the reader to apply the ideas from that chapter to their own lives and situations.

This book was easy to read, helpful, and interesting. I would (and have!) recommended it to anyone who wants to live their life as the best version of themself.

Neighbor Love Yourself is a life changing encounter full of precious gems that will not disappoint. Bryan brings a priceless message of hope and love as he writes God breathed inspiration build out of truth and captivating experiences. I hung on every word thankful for the opportunity to positively nourish my soul. I am the sister who saw her life flash before her eyes and the one who almost passed out from receiving a Pringles can in the mail. However, I am also the one whose life was forever molded by a person (“the best big brother”) who sewed seeds of kindness and love into me from my first memories until now. I cannot wait for the sequel! Bryan, get writing and thank you for sharing!

#Part 1: Book Details & Summary

1️⃣ Book Details:
- Title: *Neighbor, Love Yourself*
- Author: Bryan Crum
- Genre: Self-Help / Inspirational Non-Fiction
- Target Audience: Adults seeking personal growth

2️⃣ Setting:
The book is anchored in real-life vignettes drawn from Bryan Crum’s career as a hospice chaplain and personal experiences. These stories span relatable scenarios—from parenting mishaps to profound moments of human connection—creating a tapestry of everyday life. The settings, though varied, serve as backdrops for universal lessons, grounding abstract concepts in tangible, often humorous moments.

3️⃣ Main Characters:
Bryan himself emerges as the guiding voice, blending vulnerability and wit. Through anecdotes, he introduces characters like a symbolic goat (representing lingering self-doubt) and metaphors such as "quiet oil" (symbolizing inner resilience). These creative devices act as companions, helping readers navigate themes of self-worth.

4️⃣ Plot and Problem Area:
The narrative centers on dismantling societal myths about self-love and worth. Challenges include overcoming internalized negativity and societal pressures. Crum employs tools like flashlights (clarity) and sawhorses (support systems) to reframe struggles. The resolution? A celebration of inherent worth, urging readers to embrace life’s "check-engine lights" as growth opportunities.

---

#Part 2: My Opinion

1️⃣ Strengths:
- Storytelling & Humor: Crum’s tales, like the banned children’s book saga, blend levity with depth, making introspection feel like a chat with a wise friend.
- Metaphorical Tools: Analogies like the "doubt goat" linger, offering memorable mental anchors for self-reflection.
- Reflection Questions: End-of-chapter prompts (e.g., “How do your narratives shape your reality?”) bridge theory to practice.
- Tone: His hospice chaplain background infuses warmth, transforming heavy topics into hopeful dialogues.

2️⃣ Weaknesses:
- Repetition: Some metaphors recur excessively, occasionally diluting their impact.
- Surface-Level Exploration: Certain concepts, like "belief as primer," could benefit from deeper philosophical unpacking.
- Pacing: While engaging, the whimsical tone might oversimplify struggles for readers seeking rigorous analysis.

3️⃣ Message/Theme:
At its core, the book champions self-acceptance as the foundation for loving others. It argues that worth isn’t earned but inherent—a radical counter to modern achievement culture. Themes of resilience and divine grace subtly underscore the narrative, making spirituality accessible without dogma.

4️⃣ Writing Style:
Crum’s prose is conversational, peppered with self-deprecating humor and vivid imagery. His dialogue feels authentic, as if he’s speaking directly to the reader. Literary devices like anthropomorphism (e.g., the goat) and metaphor dominate, simplifying complex emotions into digestible lessons.

---

#Part 3: Conclusion

1️⃣ Personal Takeaway:
The book reshaped my view of self-compassion—not as indulgence but necessity. While I wished for more nuanced discussions, its accessibility makes it a potent entry point for those new to self-help.

2️⃣ Final Verdict:
Recommend?: Wholeheartedly. Ideal for readers craving a blend of humor and heart, especially those navigating transitions or seeking spiritual grounding.
Cultural Significance: Challenges pervasive self-criticism, offering a counter-narrative of grace in a perfectionist world.

3️⃣ Rating:
4.5/5 ⭐
- Plot/Structure: 4/5 (Creative but occasionally meandering)
- Characters/Metaphors: 5/5 (Unforgettable and inventive)
- Writing Style: 4.5/5 (Warmth outweighs simplicity)
- Impact: 5/5 (A catalyst for introspection)

---

#Bonus Elements

🎨 Cover & Aesthetic:
While unseen, the title alone evokes community and introspection—a fitting prelude to its contents.

📈 Emotional Journey:
A rollercoaster of laughter (the hornet story!), quiet tears, and “aha” moments. Crum’s hospice stories, in particular, pierce the soul with their raw humanity.

💬 Comparison:
Combines the wit of Brené Brown’s storytelling with the spiritual depth of 'The Alchemist', yet feels uniquely Crum.

📚 Recommendation:
Gift this to a friend battling self-doubt, a book club craving meaningful discourse, or anyone needing permission to prioritize their worth.

---

💡 Final Thoughts:
'Neighbor, Love Yourself' isn’t just a book—it’s an invitation to dance in the rain of self-acceptance. Bryan Crum’s voice, both irreverent and tender, will linger long after the last page, urging you to reclaim your narrative. A beacon for weary souls. 🌟

The book "Neighbor, Love Yourself: Discover Your Value, Live Your Worth" leads readers to understand their worth by using a spiritual approach. Bryan Crum applies his ten years as a hospice chaplain to provide deep understanding of human possibility together with how self-love creates a strong basis for neighboring love.

Core Message
The main idea presented by Crum carries deep meaning because self-acceptance of our worth precedes being able to love others genuinely. Throughout the book the author presents personal growth as an "internal expedition" to reveal neglected divine qualities found within each person.

Many patients Crum met in his time at hospitals shared similar feelings of living less than fully by failing to understand their own value fully. His experiences of sitting with the dying enabled Crum to fully understand the way our perceptions of ourselves affect all aspects of our existence.

Practical Wisdom
This guide delivers functional strategies which help people identify activate their "divinely sophisticated tools" that exist in everyone. According to Crum readers learn to recover their "owner's manual" which enables them to transform doubt about worth into appreciation for priceless value.

Love yourself. To me, that is challenging. I have always known God loves me and died for me. But loving myself? That has never been a strong point for me. This was definitely a book written specifically for my needs. God brought it across my desk to give me some healing, I think. It was hard to read at times as I went through the process of changing my thinking. I loved how author Bryan Crum brought things to life with stories that highlighted whatever spiritual truths he sought to share. They made for engaging chapters, easily relatable and the perfect way to introduce concepts or reinforce points. I admire authors who can so flawlessly tell stories the way Crum does, helping to draw readers in and maintaining their attention as they then teach the cocnepts that might otherwise have seemed boring or academic. At the end of each chapter is a well designed chapter reflection that quickly summarizes the main points in a few sentences and then provides a handful of questions for personal response. These questions are where I found myself challenged and where my own growth occurred. They are not something that should be skipped or glossed over because that is most likely where the biggest benefit lies. And it is probably going to help readers get the most out of it, which is why they pick up the book in the first place. Very well done, well written book that offers immense promise to those looking to grow spiritually.

The very perceptive and inspirational book Neighbor, Love Yourself by Bryan Crum exhorts readers to embrace self-love as a vital component of leading a happy life. This book presents a different approach to self-worth, combining wisdom, personal experiences, and helpful guidance to help readers uncover their inner value. It has an introduction by best-selling author Bob Goff.

Crum has years of experience listening to the regrets and thoughts of people who are nearing the end of their life as a former hospice priest. Because of self-doubt and a lack of self-love, he discovered that many people thought they had not lived up to their full potential. With these profound revelations, he offers the notion that self-love is not selfish but rather necessary for genuinely loving and serving others.

The book leads readers on a journey of self-acceptance through humorous anecdotes, self-acceptance exercises, and captivating storytelling. It serves as a reminder that everyone is deserving of love and that God has provided us with the means to live happy lives; all we have to do is acknowledge and make use of them.

I heartily recommend Neighbor, Love Yourself to anyone who is experiencing self-doubt, unrealized potential, or is looking for a more profound awareness of their value. This book is an invaluable resource for spiritual meditation and personal development because of Crum's insightful and caring prose.

"Neighbor, Love Yourself," authored by Bryan Crum, is a comprehensive guide rooted in spiritual teachings aimed at helping individuals realize their inner worth and live a more fulfilling life. Drawing from his experiences as a hospice chaplain, Bryan Crum offers insights into the universal longing for purpose and the power of self-love💗, which he posits is essential before one can genuinely love others.

The structure of the book is commendable, consisting of 19 chapters that not only present illuminating concepts but also engage readers in thoughtful exercises through Chapter Reflections. These reflections encourage readers to apply the principles discussed in their own lives, promoting active participation in their growth journey.

To love ourselves as God loves us is perhaps the hardest yet most transformative journey we can undertake. This book is an invitation to embrace that love—not just for ourselves, but as a bridge to loving others more deeply, more fully, and more freely.

One of the most remarkable qualities of this book is its ability to make readers feel *enough*. In a world that often fuels self-doubt and comparison, this book offers a refreshing pause. Drawing from heartfelt conversations with individuals nearing the end of their lives, the author reveals the regrets and missed opportunities that haunt many. However, instead of focusing on sadness, the author uses these lessons as a roadmap to help readers accept their value before it's too late.

The author's style is straightforward but effective, fusing personal observations with doable recommendations. He stresses the value of taking care of oneself, establishing limits, and getting over self-doubt. For people who value a spiritual approach to personal development, the faith-based perspective adds depth and has a particularly powerful effect.

The relatability of this novel is what sets it apart. It is simple to relate to because of the personal tales interwoven throughout, which impart knowledge without being overpowering. At its heart is a heavenly wisdom that inspires readers to realize their own potential and lead meaningful lives.

The book has a calming and positivity-filled title. It can be categorized as a self-help and non-fiction genre.

Who doesn't want positivity in their life and an aura filled with it? But do we often keep ourselves filled with positivity? If we ask that question, the real answer will be "No," and the sugar-coated answer will be "Maybe." In this book, the author has provided us with insightful knowledge about how to improve ourselves with self-love and how it can transform our lives beautifully and drastically.

This is a self-help book that encourages us to pamper ourselves and boost our inner energy to achieve and live the life we value. The book speaks about self-love, self-worth, and the thoughts we allow into our minds and how they shape our reality. I particularly like how the chapters are presented with a story-like narration, which made the reading easier. The chapters about confidence were my favorites because I personally feel that I am lacking in that area. Each chapter ends with a section called "Chapter Reflection," which summarizes the lessons and tips and also asks some questions that we should take from that particular chapter.

If you are an avid reader or a fan of self-help books, you might find the ideas in this book familiar or not something new. However, if you are new to this genre, you will love it and gain useful tips from it.

🪽 “Neighbor, Love yourself” authored by Bryan Crum is a self-help guide aimed at assisting readers in discovering their authentic inner self. The author’s main goal is to emphasise that we were created with love and all the necessary tools to endure.
.
🪽 One of the book’s most remarkable qualities is its capacity to evoke feelings in the reader. It provides a necessary respite in a society that constantly fosters self-doubt and comparison. Crum’s insights, shaped by conversations with terminally ill people, highlight the regrets and missed opportunities that weigh heavily on individuals. Rather than dwelling in sorrow, he employs these lessons as a guide to assist readers in recognizing their worth before it’s too late.
.
🪽 Crum uses the metaphor of a seaplane to illustrate how we often underestimate our potential. Just like a seaplane is built to soar but remains stuck on water, many of us live far below our intended purpose. We let circumstances define us, forgetting that we were designed for greater heights. The book challenges us to embrace our true capabilities and rise above our limitations. A beautiful book to love yourself.

This book feels like an enveloping hug, an inside joke from an old friend, an honest story shared over coffee.

One of my favorite quotes from the book (I came back to it several times) was "take small sips and great gulps." A lot of inspirational books I've read in the past speak majorly to the person you might want to become more like, but leave me feeling unsure or even intimidated on where to begin. When I finished Neighbor, Love Yourself, I felt empowered to not only take the lessons beyond the pages, but anchored in the truth of whether it’s a small sip or a big gulp, it’s still an offering.

This is one of those books where you’ll finish a chapter and realize you have a big, fat smile on your face. Don’t get me wrong — there’s lots of nuanced, emotional stories shared within these pages. However, what really drew me to the book was Bryan’s ability to harness the nuanced lessons of life in approachable, often times hilarious, stories.

Neighbor, Love Yourself is a story we all need to hear about the love we can share so freely if we first offer it to ourselves and that just maybe, life is better if we laugh through it. Thankful for this read.

This book, a guide to self-love, is filled with wisdom, humor, and invaluable insights that will empower you to live life with newfound confidence and authenticity.

Bryan shares two utmost truths:

Review :
'Neighbour, Love Yourself" is a self-help book where the author helps the readers to find their true inner self by reminding us that God created us with love and with all the equipment that needed to survive.

Instead of pointing out what we need to change in ourselves and what to do for that point by point, the author shares with us beautiful inspiring stories from renowned people to some random incredible, miracle news he heard, also giving us some stories for his own life. And show us how if we just acknowledge our inner strength and start to love ourselves we can overcome the boundaries we put around ourselves.

What I most like about the book is the author's writing style, it is so well done and well organised, that you would not feel you're reading a self-help book, but a short story collection to boost yourself. And all these the author did with the mention of divine power and reminding us about it.

The book is so good, full of insights and thought provoking words, that it is going to last with you for long.

Bryan Crum presents Neighbor, Love Yourself as an inspiring guidance system for identifying self-worth and developing your ability to love yourself. Bob Goff provides the touching foreword of this book that combines wisdom with humor and practical lessons for readers who want to live authentically with confidence.

During his ten years as a hospice chaplain Crum heard numerous life-learning stories from those who were nearing death which revealed their main regrets and lost possibilities. The author leads readers into self-realization and divine understanding about their true potential through his reflective insights.

The content in this book serves anyone who experiences self-doubt, lacks fulfillment or wants to understand their true worth. Beyond its self-help orientation the book serves as a valuable reminder that you deserve love while you possess the ability to create meaningful purposeful life. Reading this book becomes essential for those who want both to fulfill their potential and understand God's plan of self-love

The author's style is straightforward but effective, fusing personal observations with doable recommendations. He stresses the value of taking care of oneself, establishing limits, and getting over self-doubt. For people who value a spiritual approach to personal development, the faith-based perspective adds depth and has a particularly powerful effect.

Crum's writing is accessible and engaging, filled with memorable anecdotes that illustrate profound truths about love and self-perception. He argues that before we can extend love to others—our neighbors, friends, and family—we must first cultivate self-love as intended by our Creator. This premise resonates deeply, acting as a catalyst for readers to embrace their inner value and live life fully rather than in a state of half-hearted existence.

Overall, "Neighbor, Love Yourself" serves as an enlightening guide for anyone seeking affirmation of their worth. It is a must-read for those yearning for transformation through self-acceptance and love
