The Room at the End is the 8th and final novella in the Harbor Pointe series. This one is set in 2072, in a post war time. The government owns almost everything including the Harbor Pointe Inn. They determine how much people can spend and ending their own lives is something they support. Mia Hawthorne was the last owner of the Inn and lost it after the suicide of her wife, Emmy. In despair and feeling responsible she has decided to end her life. The Life Sanctuary branch of the government has procured her a room and given her credits to spend at the Inn before she commits the act. She is not the only one there. There are actual guests, another woman there for the same purpose, a man whose wife was killed there by an employee and come just to be near where she spent her last days and lots of spirits. Will Mia be able to commit the act?
When Mia arrives she is taken to the keepers cottage, where she and Emmy had lived. She felt something ominous when she arrived and shortly after began to see spirits of her ancestors, some evil, some just wanting her to leave. I enjoyed her interactions with Ollie the collie pup she finds on the cliff. He is loving and to me kept her going. The spirits were well described, their physical aspects, their voices, grip and smell that made them more real to me. Although Mia wanted to die, her inner strength helped her to withstand their temptation to kill herself. She wanted to do it on her own terms. Meeting the others at the hotel, including a newlywed couple gave her some ideas and the ending was a wonderful surprise. I loved how this book brought things full circle including spirits of the characters from earlier books. A great story and series that I recommend.

Harmony Kent's Room at the End (2024), Book 8 of 8 in the Harbor Pointe series, is a fitting end to the saga. Set in the near future, Mia Hawthorne is the final successor to the Hawthorne family dynasty who started and successfully ran Harbor Pointe Inn. For unclear reasons, Mia lost the Inn to creditors, the beginning of a downward spiral in her own life, spotlighted by personal tragedies such as the death of Mia's wife. It became more than she could handle and she agreed to a government-supervised (AI-controlled in this futuristic time) end-of-life event that would allow Mia to sink into the oblivion of nothingness. Oddly, of all places the government could have sent her for this final experience, she ended up at Harbor Pointe. She arrived at the Inn, committed to her deadly decision, and there met a Collie puppy named Ollie who seemed as lonely and needy as Mia. Somehow, with the canine's soulful eyes and relentless support of this woman he barely knew, Mia delayed her final steps.
And things started to change.
This is a great wrap-up to this unique series of novelettes. Like the anchor leg in a relay, Kent pulls out all the stops to make this series one you won't want to miss.

In this final novella in this compelling series we find ourselves in a future devastated by war and tryranny. Big Brother AI is in control of every part of a human’s life including their finances and also actively encourages self destruction.
The Harbor Pointe Inn may have been taken over by the government and transformed inside out of all recognition, but the spirits that have haunted this centuries old hotel are beyond the reach of their all consuming and corrupt power.
When grieving Mia Hawthorne is sent to her former family home and business for her last journey, she discovers her resolve will be tested as she is met with restless and angry spirits of those who feel she has disgraced the family name. Almost driven to despair by the force of their hatred, and one in particular who has more than simple revenge on his mind, small slivers of hope begin to work their way into her heart and grief.
The author has created wonderful characters both living and dead and has maintained the atmospheric nature of this old inn and lighthouse on the clifftops. There is also a convincing sense of menace and gathering doom as the story progresses, and it creates the impression that nothing can change the course of events.
Thankfully the human spirit is stronger than both artificial intelligence or rampaging spirits and light appears at the end of the tunnel.
A terrific end to this series I will remember for a long time to come. I recommend this episode in The Harbor Pointe Inn’s history and all the others that came before.

Mia Hawthorne is the last in the line of the Hawthorne family to own the Harbor Pointe Inn, which is now under government ownership. (Older generations of Hawthornes have been characters in the previous books of the series.) After stepping down from her post at the inn, some time has passed, and Mia returns to the inn as a guest. That’s because a government program called The Last Sanctuary picked the place for Mia to carry out her request to kill herself. The Last Sanctuary will cover the cost, since Mia can’t afford it.
Mia is stricken by grief over the memory of her wife Emmy committing suicide on the property. (Which was done before the action of the book begins.) Also, Mia blames herself for Emmy’s death.
The story presents three situations as parallel in their sliding into worse conditions: Mia’s life, the inn’s quality, and American society in general. One crisis after another — financial and pandemic — has left many people in desperate shape. The inn’s interior decorations have gone from charming resort to plain. The lobby sounds gray and tired.
Guilt and grief weigh heavily on Mia for losing Emmy and ownership of the inn. Also, Mia has to deal with fear, as she is confronted by the nasty ghost of Isaac Hawthorne, one of her ancestors. And with Isaac wishing Mia dead, she starts to doubt that Emmy killed herself.
Truly, Mia has a lot on her plate. A bright spot appears in the form of an energetic Collie puppy, whom Mia finds and names Ollie. Mia and Ollie become a team, and Mia certainly could use the puppy’s affection while dealing with the ghosts of her ancestors.
This story presents difficult feelings situations, and does so in a sensitive way. It tells that, during loss and grief in our lives, hope remains. With the help of allies, we can summon the energy to look toward that hope and realize that everything around us is not destroyed.

The Room at the End is the final novella in the Harbor Pointe Series. It is a dystopian story set in a future world dominated by AI and a 'Big Brother' type of government. I thought this futurist setting for the final story was a great choice, and as a big fan of dystopian books, the storyline and setting worked very well for me. The plot also involves a strong paranormal element which is another big plus for me. The ghosts also tied this novella firmly in with the storylines and concepts of its predecessor novellas in the series.
Mai Hawthorne has suffered the loss of her wife to suicide. With no other obvious explanation, Mia blames herself for this death and her life spirals down into depression and an inability to cope or take appropriate action in her business. Mia is the owner of the Harbor Pointe Inn at the time of her partner's suicide. The novella starts with Mia having lost her business to the greedy, post apocalyptic government of the time which controls surviving humans through AI and robotics. Having elected to end her life, Mia has been sent to Harbor Pointe Inn by the government's suicide department. There, she is expected to do the deed within a short period and all of her expenses are paid for by the government.
As soon as she arrives, Mia becomes aware of various ghosts, malevolent and benevolent, who haunt the lighthouse keeper's cottage which has been allocated to her. I’ve Never Read a Dystopian Story Like This
In a bleak, AI-driven, post-apocalyptic future, there’s not much to look forward to. Technology has taken on a life of its own, the top one-percenters have used it for their own greedy machinations, and the rest of the populace have little to live for. This is so true, those in charge have created The Last Sanctuary, a governmental program designed to help people pass on by their own hands.
Mia, the protagonist, checks into the Keeper’s Cottage at the Harbor Pointe Inn. Her stay is covered by The Last Sanctuary. Despite the government, and a malevolent presence, awaiting her passing, she’s ultimately resistant to it—a fact she finds surprising. Why is she now so utterly aware of the end? And why is she reconsidering?
The answers to those questions are compelling. Shocking. And will have you sprinting to the end to learn her fate. It certainly had me doing so.
All of the characters had unique voices and personalities, and I found them to be relatable and genuine. Special love goes to Ollie, who totally stole my heart. Meanwhile, the atmosphere stole my breath. This story has some of the best passages by this author I’ve ever read. She outdid herself with mood-setting and world-building.
I’ve never read a futuristic tale that mixed technology, spirits, and dystopian governance in quite this way. The topics are dark, to be sure. I’ll avoid spoilers and suggest readers take a chance to see if the characters manage to find any light. Highly recommended.

This book is a paranormal dystopian science fiction taking place in the year 2072. The government is authoritarian and robots, Artificial Intelligence, and surveillance technology is in service of the government. Mia Hawthorne lost her wife Emmy to suicide, and she has also lost her family’s business, a hotel, the Inn by the lighthouse in Harbor Pointe, a place with a long history of hauntings and other mysteries. She has lost her desire to live, and the government’s suicide department has sent her to the Harbor Pointe Inn to take her own life. Basically, they sent her to end her life at the family business she lost. She is staying by herself in a spooky house a bit away from the Inn itself.
The story starts out very dark, everything goes wrong, evil is lurking and attacking. There are ghosts, apparitions and a powerful sinister presence that wants Mia dead. There is evil in dark corners. However, things are not exactly like they look to Mia and the other guests and employees at the hotel. There are shocking revelations, incredible discoveries, but there is still hope. Mia has the power to set things right in a big way.
This is a very atmospheric story, there are storms, strange events, foreboding circumstances and disturbing hauntings. The forces of darkness are indeed very present and very powerful in this novella. The story features a lot of interesting surprises, it is very suspenseful and well written. In other words, it is a real page turner and an excellent finale to the Harbor Pointe series. I highly recommend this book.

Wow! What a story! This author has pulled out all the stops on this one.
Set in the near future, the world has been overtaken by soulless AI, leaving humans as dispensable commodities. Sadly, that may not be far from the truth.
Mia's petition to the government for assisted suicide is answered with a room provided at the Harbor Pointe Inn she used to own. She's lost everything—Her life partner, the inn, the will to live.
This excerpt from the story says it all: What did the government employed manager think of the Lighthouse Inn’s old owner coming here to end her life? For that matter, what did Mia herself think?
The author delves deep into the human psyche as we follow Mia through the days leading up to the moment she will end it all. There are more than a few surprises along the way as ghosts from days gone by visit Mia. Secrets are uncovered that change everything.
When a puppy ends up in Mia's care, I was hopeful it might be why Mia wants to keep living. That adds another dimension to the story. Who doesn't love a puppy?
I enjoyed all the characters in this story. Many of them had been Mia's employees and some of them friends. Some not so much. This ghostly tale has so many delicious layers that it reminded me of eating a delightful cake only to find all sorts of hidden surprises inside. In this era, the corrupted government has the authority to control the global environment, the business, the individual’s assets, and the people’s daily spending. AI android is used to provide services at the Harbor Pointe Inn’s reception desk, but humans can turn it off. Drones deliver orders to people’s front doors.
Mia Hawthorn not only lost her wife, but she also lost the Inn, the historical family business. The government suicide department sent her a note to kill herself. She arrives at Harbor Pointe Inn and is arranged to stay at the cottage by the lighthouse alone instead of the Inn. She wants to end her life at the same place where her wife Emmy jumped off at the top of the lighthouse.
As soon as she arrives, she is haunted by translucent ghosts, apparitions, and a spooky atmosphere with the power going on and off. Some ghosts are her ancestors of the Hawthorne family, and one evil spirit wants to take her life. She walks on the beach and comes to a familiar dark cave. A lost collie finds her, dances around her ankle, and asks for attention. She and the puppy, Ollie, find affection for each other instantly.

Mia Hawthorne suffered an emotional breakdown, following the death of her wife, and has lost everything to a corrupt government. Now, she ends up in the old cottage, where she and her wife, Emily, once lived. But Emily is gone; another suicide victim of the Inn. All Mia wants is to end her life and join Emily on the other side.
Somehow, fate intervenes, and Mia meets the cutest collie puppy she’s ever seen. Slowly, she falls in love with the bundle of fur.
But the Inn has plans for Mia. After a series of hauntings, Mia understands the malevolent forces that haunt the Inn. Will she succumb to the evil forces that have possessed the Inn and lighthouse for hundreds of years?
For an ending to the Harbor Pointe Inn series, this dystopian novella hit the spot. There were so many surprises and a few twists that really made this book different from all the rest!

The Room at the End is a powerful conclusion the to the eight-book series set in Harbor Pointe.
Each book has used the same settings and back story but the genres and moods are varied and stunning. In this final book, the author has chosen to go for Dystopia as her genre and it works brilliantly to draw all the other threads together for a satisfying conclusion.

Ghosts feature in all of the stories. The author does a great job of creating the horror and malice she experiences. Perhaps she does too great a job, as I couldn’t have been so blasé as to return to a place where I’d been attacked by them and knew that they were still lingering and waiting to carry on. That said, the atmosphere is palpable and had me on a knife edge.
The Room at the End is a fitting and inventive end to a series I’ve loved. If these authors were to collaborate again, I’d be back to Amazon like a shot!

Each book has used the same settings and back story but the genres and moods are varied and stunning. In this final book, the author has chosen to go for Dystopia as her genre and it works brilliantly to draw all the other threads together for a satisfying conclusion.

This novella is the final installment in the Harbor Pointe series. And while it does a great job of wrapping up the ghost stories that have threaded through most of the previous books, it also holds up perfectly as a stand-alone read.
The books have moved through time from the 1800s through the present, and with this last installment, it slides forward into the year 2072. It brings a dystopian vision of the future with just the right world-building details to create a sense of bleakness for the characters.
Technological advances set the mood and have a role in the final wrap-up, but it’s the human story of love, loss, and redemption that captured me as a reader. Mia Hawthorne has lost her wife to suicide, lost her family’s business, and at the story’s start, she’s lost her desire to live. The government’s suicide department sends her to the Harbor Pointe Inn to take her own life.
While storms brew, ghosts from the inn’s past appear before her, and one of them wants her dead. Is she ready? An abandoned puppy and the truth about an old apparition shift her resolve and set her on a different path. I'm so sad that this series has ended. Each and every book was fantastic, including this one. This book takes place in the near future (2072) but brings back characters from the past. The future is quite bleak with a corrupt government using AI to control the masses. The future's government has a suicide department that allows people to choose when and how to die. Mia, the past owner of Harbor Pointe, has chosen to die at the very hotel she once owned (before the government took it away from her).
Unfortunately for Mia, there's a ghost who wants her death more than she does. New information about her wife's suicide gives Mia new purpose. In order to choose her fate, she has to confront the angry ghost, and he definitely wants her dead.
This story begins heavy because the reader grieves with Mia for her loss. The inclusion of a cute, little collie breaks up the stressful moments. The author does a great job of capturing the conflicting thoughts and emotions of Mia. I loved how Mia was not alone even when she thought she was. And I especially loved when Mia started fighting back!
This was such a great ending to an incredible series. If you have not read any of the books, I highly encourage you to read them all. You won't regret it!

“The Room at the End” is the last installment of the Harbor Pointe Series that explores the future. Mia is despondent after her wife’s death and losing her family business. She lives in a post-war world run by AI technology and the very rich. There is a suicide department in this corrupt government that pays for a person’s room so people can end their lives. Mia ended up at the very place she lost, where she will now end her life. Ghosts are waiting to add to her torment. What a cold, cruel ending for this woman, but a tiny part of her fought the idea of dying. Then enters a sweet puppy, Ollie, that she cares for. Yet, even with second thoughts, she’s expected to go through with her death. A very bleak future, that I hope never happens, is painted so elegantly by Ms. Kent. A well-written novelette with an outcome I didn’t expect. This is a tale that I won’t forget. I highly recommend this!

Set in the year 2072, author Harmony Kent ties the series up neatly when Mia Hawthorne, who once succussfully ran the Harbor Pointe Inn, is sent by the government to a place that holds so many memories following the death of her wife. Now run by a corrupt government relying on AI, the Inn is a shell of it's former self.
Mia intends to take her life while there as she feels she has nothing left to live for. Her plans are temporarily interrupted when an abandoned puppy finds her while she is taking a walk. Her mothering instincts take over as she doesn't feel right about taking her life until she can find the collie's owner. Ghosts from her past haunt her while she is there, though not all of them are evil.
One of the more intriguing aspects of the novel are the author's take on the future. For example, Mia orders groceries delivered by a drone.
I read all eight novellas in the series. While they can be read as stand-alones, I recommend they be read in order as I liked how authors made reference to prior events that happened in earlier books in the series.

Set in the future, at the Lighthouse Inn in Harbour Pointe, this dark, dystopian and ghostly story quickly had the hair on the back of my neck standing up.
The year is 2072, and Mia Hawthorne, the remaining descendant of the original owners, has been sent to Harbour Pointe by a government department called The Last Sanctuary. This is not a social visit.
She had been there before, but fate had dealt her harsh blows since then.
I didn’t expect to find a cute and adorable puppy called Ollie in a ghost story. Strangely, it made all the doom and gloom far more poignant as Mia forgot her troubles while caring for the puppy.
Cleverly plotted, this disturbing story refused to be put down. I prayed that Mia would find her answers in this desolate place.
The Room at the End was the perfect ending to the Harbour Pointe Series.

Harmony Kent’s The Room at the End powerfully concludes the Harbor Pointe series. She wraps up the collective stories via a journey through time that includes the contrasts of good and evil, hope and despair, forgiveness and guilt, and finally, beginnings and endings. Kent manages this journey via the protagonist’s inner torments and revelations.
I was taken aback by the power of Kent’s writing. Every word engaged. And her introspective approach quickly held my heart. Yes, the writing is that powerful. I felt I knew the characters and lived in the Harbor Pointe area. And though the conclusion was perfect, I didn’t want the story to end. This was a very strong, Five Star read for me. I highly recommend it as a standalone or as part of the series.

This story is set in the future when a greedy, corrupt government dictates much of what citizens can think and do. Defeated, Mia checks into a suicide option the government provides and is sent to the Harbor Pointe Inn, the property she and her family had owned before the government stole it from her, to take her own life. Once there, she discovers that her wife Emmy didn't jump from the lighthouse walkway. She was pushed. By a malevolent ghost. The same ghost that threatens to kill her if she doesn't jump, too. How do you stop a ghost? And then what? Her circumstances are still the same. What does she have to live for? I enjoyed how everything in the story played out. The very ending felt a little too simple, but I liked it, and that's what matters.

Intriguing. Tension-filled.
I read the first paragraph and was immediately hooked. My eyes were glued to the laptop screen. Beautiful style. Engaging plot. A peek into 2072—who could resist learning what’ll happen to us in the near future? Mysterious? Yes. Ghostly? Yes. Scary? Very much. Suspenseful? Without a doubt. A satisfactory ending? For me, it was. And at the end, redemption, I would say a sweet revenge! I read it in one sitting, all chores forgotten for the day. And though this kind of stories is not my cup of tea, I really enjoyed The Room at the End. Highly recommended to the fans of the genre.

This is the second Harbor Pointe novella I’ve read and it’s astounding how Harmony Kent has adapted the same location – Harbor Pointe – to tell a different story set years into the future.
A recent tragic death – ghosts… I only slept that night thanks to Ollie the Collie cuddling up to Mia the way my own pup does. Now I’ve read to the end, all I can say is WOW. Anything more would give away too much. Go buy a copy!

The Room at the End by Harmony Kent concludes the Harbor Pointe series in a dramatic manner. The ghosts take center stage even in the future! Set in the year 2072, Mia Hawthorne returns to Harbor Pointe Inn with a guilt in her heart and intends to commit suicide at the same place where her wife ended her life. Ironically she is put up at the keeper’s cottage, which renews her memories of marital bliss and booming family business. Not to forget her state of mind. Then she meets Ollie - a little puppy who warms her heart and the melancholy mood of the story changes.
The revelations may be slow but they add a lot of strength to character development. Kent handles the changes in the same astute manner as she builds the gloomy aura in the beginning. The pandemonium within the heart of Mia has been captured in a perfect manner. Will Mia find peace? How? You have to read to find the answers. In an austere, technology (AI) driven future, Mia checks into the Harbor Pointe Inn—a property she once owned and which her ancestors built. Her stay has been paid by The Last Sanctuary, a government entity that is funding her intent to commit suicide. After the suicide of her wife and her loss of the inn, Mia feels she has nothing left to live for.

Surprise, surprise! What starts out as a mired-in-dread tale quickly changes into something brighter, like shafts of light splintering into a dark room. Ready to kill herself, Mia is halted by the unexpected arrival of a stray collie puppy. Unable to abandon the dog, she finds herself growing attached, but that connection is just one step on her journey to discovery.
Phantoms begin to appear, all of them chained to the inn or its accompanying lighthouse—some malevolent, others opening her eyes to her situation and unrealized truths of the past. I don’t want to say more for fear of spoilers, but I will say this story corkscrewed in ways I never anticipated. Even the secondary characters shimmered from the pages, each fully fleshed out and intricate to the plot.
Finally, the writing itself is pristine. The author dishes up the setting in such a way that I breathed in each vividly expressed and exquisite word. Often I had to stop and reread a passage just to soak in a deft turn of phrase or the lyrical quality of the writing. At the beginning of the book, Mia is overwhelmed with guilt and grief from both losing her wife, Emmy, and ownership of the inn to the government. She thinks she is ready for the last step.
At the now run-down inn, she and a collie named Ollie become friends as she faces a fearsome ghost named Isaac Hawthorne, one of her ancestors. She learns that her wife’s death might not have been suicide, relieving her of the pressure of causing her death. Though these are depressing times, there is a ray of hope entwined in the last mystery.
From the minute I started, I could barely put this book down. Mysteries were solved and lives were saved.
