'That which is uncooked is destined to be cooked, if has been prepared with cooking in mind' – The Enigma of Garlic
Alexander McCall Smith's 44 Scotland Street novels are loved and enjoyed by readers throughout the world. In each book there are countless scenes involving conversations around the table, in the kitchen, or in a cafe – friendship and food go well together.
With this delightful cookbook readers can immerse themselves in the world of Edinburgh's New Town and recreate some of their favourite characters' signature enjoy Bertie's much-loved Panforte di Sienna, Angus Lordie's famous cheese scones or host your own Scotland Street supper.
I’m not much of a chef, but I am a massive fan of Alexander McCall Smith’s 44 Scotland Street series. This book and its recipes are just as charming as the series, and I’m looking forward to giving these recipes a try.
Each recipe is related to an incident from one of the books, including an excerpt from the text. No series of books has brought me more joy than this one, so being reminded of various episodes by these recipes was a delight.
I can’t wait to try some of these recipes! They’re grouped by character, which is fun. They range from easy (Bertie’s Porridge Islands) to more advanced (Bruce’s Prescription Only Lobster Bisque). I think my first outing will be Angus Lordie’s Cheese Scones! Then, Big Lou’s “Off the record buttery bacon rolls”! Every fan of 44 Scotland Street should add this cookbook to their collection.
