Tetsuko Kuroyanagi

She founded the Totto Foundation, named for the eponymous and autobiographical protagonist of her book Totto-chan, The Little Girl at the Window. The Foundation professionally trains deaf actors, implementing Kuroyanagi's vision of bringing theater to the deaf.
In 1984, in recognition of her charitable works, Kuroyanagi was appointed to be a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, being the first person from Asia to hold this position. During the late 1980s and the 1990s, she visited many developing countries in Asia and Africa for charitable works and goodwill missions, helping children who had suffered from disasters and war as well as raising international awareness of the situations of children in poor countries. Kuroyanagi has raised more than $20 million for the UNICEF programmes that she has been involved in, through television fund-raising campaigns. She also used the royalties from her bestselling book, Totto-chan, to contribute to UNICEF.
In 1997, Kuroyanagi published the book Totto-chan's Children, which was based on her experience working for as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador from 1984 to 1996. Kuroyanagi is a director of the Japanese branch of the World Wildlife Fund.
Kuroyanagi has twice brought America's National Theater of the Deaf to Japan, acting with them in sign language.
For her involvement in media and television entertainment, Kuroyanagi won the Japanese Cultural Broadcasting Award, which is the highest television honour in Japan. Since then, she has been voted 14 times as Japan’s favourite television personality, for the show Tetsuko’s Room.[3]
In 2000, Kuroyanagi became the first recipient of the Global Leadership for Children Award, which was established by UNICEF in the 10th anniversary of the 1990 World Summit for Children. In May 2003, Kuroyanagi received Order of the Sacred Treasure in recognition of her two decades of service for the world’s children.

I love reading memoirs/auto-bios/biographies, as I get to learn about other cultures and lives and experiences that I will never experience myself. It can be a mixed bag though, as sometimes the person writing/being written about is not as interesting as the blurb made them sound, or they come across as a huge unrealizing jerk.
This book, thankfully, did not have that pitfall. The only two quibbles were that the age of Totto-chan was never really specified throughout the book, so it wasn't easy to know how old she was at certain times. Also, Totto-chan referred to herself in the third person the entire time, which I think might be a cultural thing, as it was distinctly different from most memoirs/auto-bios I have read in the past.
Other than that, this was incredibly interesting to me. She lived such a long and varied life! Her childhood/youth, the history she lived through, her experiences as an adult in her line of work as an entertainer, it was all so fascinating! Sad though. The longer one lives, the less and less friends and family are around each succeeding year. I know a lot of people who want to live as long as possible, which makes sense, but it can get lonely.
I really enjoyed this book. I don't want to spoil anything for you, so I will just say if you don't mind the third person quirk and the lack of ages throughout the book and you like memoirs that deal with history and the entertainment world, but not the Western view of them, this is the book for you.
4, definitely one I will be recommending to my customers, stars.

Sadly, here we are again, doomed to repeat history if the current US-Isnotreal aggression is allowed to continue.
My final guest of 2022, in keeping with tradition, was comedy and talk show legend Tamori-san. I said to him, "I wonder what next year has in store for us," to which he replied, "I think our country is about to enter a new pre-war era." I pray that his prediction continues to be wrong for years and years to come.
My forty-eight years of hosting Tetsuko 's Room have been forty-eight years of listening to these kinds of stories. It is important to me to explain here that one of my motivations for writing this book was to leave behind a record of my own wartime experience.

Đọc Totto-chan giữa Sài Gòn, để thương những điều mắt thường hổng thấy...
Cầm cuốn sách trên tay mà lòng tui cứ xốn xang. Cảm giác y như gặp lại đứa bạn thân hồi nhỏ xíu, cái con bé loắt choắt chuyên làm chuyện "trời ơi đất hỡi" ở trường Tomoe hơn bốn chục năm trước. Totto-chan giờ lớn rồi, mà sao qua từng trang sách của bà Tetsuko, tui vẫn thấy nó y nguyên như cũ, vẫn là cô bé với đôi mắt trong veo nhìn cuộc đời này.
Cuốn sách này nó hổng còn hồn nhiên như cuốn đầu tiên. Nó là những trang đời thấm đẫm mùi của ly tán, của chiến tranh, của những ngày tháng mà một đứa con nít phải lớn lên bằng tốc độ của bom đạn. Tui đã đi cùng Totto-chan qua những cuộc chia ly, thấy con bé rời xa những người thương yêu nhất, và rồi lại vỡ oà khi được sum vầy.
Nhưng mà cái hay của Totto-chan, xưa hay nay cũng vậy, là những người lớn quanh con bé. Trời ơi, sao mà có những con người tử tế đến lạ lùng! Từ thầy hiệu trưởng Kobayashi, tới ba, tới mẹ, tới những người con bé gặp sau này, họ nói một lời thôi cũng đủ mát ruột mát gan. Giữa cái thời buổi khó khăn, loạn lạc, mà họ vẫn dành cho một đứa trẻ những lời nói hiền khô, những cái vỗ về ấm áp. Cái câu nói của thầy hiệu trưởng: "Không sao hết, em thật là một cô bé ngoan" nó cứ văng vẳng trong đầu tui. Nó giống như một liều thuốc chữa lành vậy đó. Chỉ cần một câu đó thôi, là đủ sức để một đứa trẻ tin rằng cả thế giới này vẫn đang dang tay ôm lấy nó.
Và rồi tui nhận ra, điều lớn nhất mà cuốn sách này neo lại trong lòng mình, chính là cái câu: "Thương cảm cả những điều mắt thường không nhìn thấy".
Sài Gòn mình cũng vậy ha? Đôi khi mình thấy một cô bán hàng rong mặt mày quạu quọ, mình đâu biết tối qua con cổ bệnh nguyên đêm. Mình gặp một anh chạy xe ôm cộc lốc, mình đâu biết ảnh mới bị khách bom hàng. Ai cũng có một cuộc chiến của riêng mình, những vết xước mà người ngoài không tài nào thấy được.
Đọc Totto-chan để học cách nhìn sâu hơn một chút, thương nhiều hơn một chút. Thương cho những nỗi buồn không nói thành lời, thương cho những cố gắng không ai công nhận. Cuộc đời của Totto-chan rực rỡ, chính là vì con bé được bao bọc bởi những người chịu "nhìn" và chịu "thương" những điều vô hình đó.
Nếu lòng bạn đang bộn bề, hay đơn giản là muốn tìm lại chút ấm áp, chút tin yêu giữa Sài Gòn tấp nập này, hãy đọc "Totto-chan bên cửa sổ - Những chuyện tiếp theo". Đọc đi, để thấy cuộc đời này, dẫu có trầy trụa cách mấy, vẫn đáng yêu vô cùng khi người ta còn biết thương nhau.

I recently (for the first time) read Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window (not the sequel!) in preparation for the newly published sequel and found myself fascinated - what a cute little book that gives us an insider's look at the life of a whimsical little (rich) girl during the ramp up into World War II. I was surprised when the older book ended well, basically when the war came to the Kuroyanagi family, so I was so glad to see that this long-awaited sequel picked up and expanded on the family's life during and after the war as well.
Just like the older book, even though this one goes well into Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's adult life, she refers to herself in the third person throughout, keeping akin to that whimsicality despite having to move so suddenly up to Aomori and learn to live in an apple hut instead of their big Tokyo home, and the hard work and ingenuity of her mother (despite being from a family that basically told her she would never marry someone who had her cook or clean) to provide for and thrive during these extremely hard times.
Not only that, but we learned what this long time entertainer really went through to become the legend she is today (spoilers: so much hard work!). Again this book kind of leaves it open to even more story as it cuts off at a certain time in her life, and while I would be surprised if a third book came out of it, I would read it...
This is a really lovely, important read for a look at a person's life in an era where every day there are less people who remember it.

Review - A 7yr old girl promises her headmaster that she would teach at her school when she grows up. And war crushes that lovely dream; it destroys everything - essential, beautiful and predictable. It teaches a small girl to ration and eat 15 soyabeans over a whole day, it turns a demure homemaker to a sole breadwinner & enterprising businesswoman, a violinist and concertmaster to a soldier and PoW incarcerated in Siberia.
If Totto Chan - The Little Girl at the Window deals with the author's elementary schooling years at Tomoe Gakuen and reveals an ‘ideal’ environment with war only in backdrop, The Sequel charters the journey of author and her family through raging WW2 years, unraveling many challenges they fight to thrive and rebuild all that’s lost.
The sequel is grounded in ‘reality’ that a lot of us know little of from books and TV. It's not heavy for it also details the author's high school experiences, her journey up the career ladder post war; and in a third person narrative, the author leaves us buoyant with her verve, plain honesty & curiosity. Her mother too is impressive; I wish I had half her grit and optimism though I shamelessly admit I wouldn't want even a fraction of her tough circumstances. When the author’s maternal grandmother comes to stay with them, three generations of women make quite an interesting canvas.
The two books together not just trace the life journey of a popular TV celebrity who once dreamt of becoming a spy, ticket collector, ballerina, street musician, teacher and a mother who reads stories to her children aloud but depict subtly, with a sprinkle of history, how Japanese viewed the ‘West” and the slow penetration of Western influences in traditional Japanese way of life. With the first book published in 1981, the sequel comes after 42 years and we readers can only be grateful to the author and the translator Yuki Tejima (and Dorothy Britton for part 1) for letting us readers have a lovely peek into this very inspiring and ‘magical’ journey.

Mở bát đầu tiên của 2026 mà mình đọc trong đúng 1 ngày!!
Cuốn sách viết về cuộc sống của Tottochan và gia đình trong thời chiến và thời hậu chiến, chủ yếu về quá trình trưởng thành của Tottochan. Đây dường như là những dòng nhật ký được Tottochan cẩn thận ghi lại. Nội dung tuy không còn hấp dẫn như cuốn "Totto chan bên cửa sổ" nhưng không hiểu sao mình cứ đọc hoài, đọc miết ko dứt được...
Đọc rồi sẽ thấy, tất cả mong muốn và dự định của Tottochan đều được bố mẹ ủng hộ, bố mẹ của Tottochan chưa từng từ chối bất cứ định hướng về việc học, về nghề nghiệp nào của cô bé cả. Đó chính là sự hậu thuẫn tinh thần từ gia đình có lẽ là một trong những điều quan trọng nhất giúp cô bé Tottochan thành công trên con đường đã chọn.
Có vài đoạn khá hay mà mình đã ghi chú lại trong khi đọc:
- “Mình đang có mười hạt đậu tương. Ngộ nhỡ lát nữa hầm trú ẩn bị trúng bom thì có thể tất cả sẽ chết. Nếu vậy thì chẳng phải nên ăn luôn bây giờ sao.” - Ôi chiến tranh....chiến tranh đã xâm chiếm tâm hồn của một đứa trẻ, cái chết do bom đạn khiến một đứa trẻ phải đấu tranh rằng nên ăn hay dành dụm 10 hạt đậu tương, rằng nếu không ăn thì bị đánh bom chết sẽ chẳng còn cơ hội được ăn nữa…
- "Có thứ hạnh phúc với đầy đủ vật chất và có thứ hạnh phúc chẳng cần đến vật chất. Biết cả hai thứ đó mới gọi là hạnh phúc."

I have not read the original memoir but I was curious enough to pick up this book. While I do believe reading the original will give you a lot of background for this book, I think that the author has also picked a very good spot for the story to be picked up again without too much issue for new comers.

The writing is easy to read, straightforward and accessible. It does feel like it was written from a young child/potentially tween style that reads as a little too simple and naive. It was good for the first part of the book but as Totto-chan aged, the style did not mature as well, and I think that would have improved the reading experience.

The second half of the novel focuses a lot more on Totto-chan’s life after the war and her path to becoming an actress and TV personality, so I think fans of Totto-chan will get the most out of this sequel (I personally grew less and less interested but this is my first introduction to Totto-chan. Still, I think the first half is an interesting account of a late war/post war childhood in Japan and could be used as school material.

Thanks NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the advanced copy of Totto-Chan, the Little Girl at the Window: The Sequel by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. It was an honor to read and review this book by such a multi talented and passionate person.
When I read the first part of Totto’s story, it was fun. But this sequel is more intense. We see her grow up in a war torn Japan in most part of the book. It felt like a coming of age story. But then she entered her adulthood, joined university to learn music and later joined NHK as an actress. The part of working in the entertainment industry, showed that she truly enjoys her work and loves working.
Things I have learned from it:
A little bit of kindness goes a long away. The kindness of the lady in the train and the kindness of Mr. Ooka moved me. Also, Totto being kind to newcomers and working for UNICEF.
Be resilient in your ambitions. Totto really worked her for where she is now.
It was indeed a memorable memoir.

Written and / or narrated in entirely third person, I could not enjoy the book to the fullest. It reads like an audiobook in a storytelling format, though it improves by the end of chapter 1.
Dropped at 57% of the book. The pacing of each chapter felt glacial and I lost interest.
While the e-book formatting also left a lot to be desired - the text and line spacing is far too cramped. I had to increase the font size to 140% so I wouldn't squint while reading it.
The cover can use a better background colour than just plain white. A pastel colour would do well in this case.
Author's postscript is the best part of the book!

Đúng như tên gọi, cuốn sách kể về hành trình của Totto sau khi rời trường Tomoe, qua tuổi trưởng thành cho đến khi Tetsuko Kuroyanagi viết cuốn sách này. Không còn những cảm xúc ngây thơ, hồn nhiên như Totto-chan bên cửa sổ, sequel này mang đến một góc nhìn tự sự, trưởng thành và cũng hiện thực hơn về chiến tranh qua con mắt Totto. Tuy nhiên, nét vô tư và lạc quan vốn có của cô bé vẫn được bộc lộ qua những biến động thời cuộc là một điểm sáng xuyên suốt câu chuyện.
Đối với cá nhân mình, việc cuốn sách tập trung vào các sự kiện và cá nhân liên quan lại khiến cho nó hơi nhuốm màu biography - một thể loại mình không quá thích - nên cho 4/5.

Ngay lời mở đầu cô Tetsuko đã tự viết là "dù thế nào tôi cũng thấy mình không thể viết hay hơn cuốn Totto-chan bên cửa sổ được", mình nghĩ chắc có lẽ cô nói đúng thật. Không còn thời ngây ngô trẻ con của Totto-chan ở trường Tomoe năm xưa nữa mà ở phần tiếp theo này, những câu chuyện đã "đời" hơn, nhuốm màu khổ cực loạn lạc nhiều hơn và cũng không thiếu những tấm lòng nhân hậu tốt bụng của con người. Chắc có lẽ do cũng từng trải qua những ngày "tuổi thơ dữ dội" (tất nhiên là không dữ dội bằng tác giả rồi) nên phần nào mình khá đồng cảm với những câu chuyện tiếp theo của Totto-chan.

Kuroyanagi’s unique voice continues to shine through in this sequel to her classic memoir, and her wartime experiences are heartrending. My only slight criticism is that the last chapter is maybe a bit too detailed. But it is truly a pleasure and a privilege to be treated to one more look into Kuroyanagi’s heart.

I wanted so much to love this book as much as l loved the original but though I enjoyed the wartime stories, the bits about her career were not particularly of any interest to me. I suppose someone more familiar with Japanese television history would find it more fascinating.

This is a sweet, stand-alone memoir suitable for anyone who'd like to read about life in Japan during the close of WW2 then the rebuild of the aftermath. Totto-chan always refers to herself as 'Totto-chan', not 'I', a style that takes a little getting into, before you forget about it. She evidently had a priviledged life that was utterly uprooted when they evacuated Tokyo due to the firebombing in 1945 and moved into someone's shed, yet she doesn't bemoan this but rejoices that there's more food in the countryside than in Tokyo. There's also a poignant moment where, as a starving child in Tokyo, she cheers soldiers going off to fight because that will earn her a snack of squid (evidently a custom of the time). After the war, her wonderfully enterprising mother hustles hard and raises the funds to return to Tokyo and have their house rebuilt. Totto-chan then finishes her schooling before a time at a Conservatoire then entering NHK. The remainder of the memoir provides a whistle-stop tour of her next 70 years in the Japanese entertainment industry. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
