When I started this book, a few things grabbed me right away. First off, the cover is STUNNING. This is the box set, but the individual books have stunning covers as well. Credit to Stephen Walker Designs, who nailed it in every way. Before the story begins, Author Bishop gives us readers a brief on where the idea for the story came from, and I loved the insight right up front. It immediately gave me a visual of what to expect in the story without ruining any plot.

These mice were a lot of fun to read about. Adored all the fantastic names and relationships among everyone, plus the mostly positive spirit of the story. While some of the dialogue was clunky, it was interesting and family oriented. There was a sense of camaraderie.

"“Gasper, were you and your engineers able to make something to carry water with?”
“Yes, we did, Uncle Horace, and I believe it will work even better than the wonderful leaves that Joshua put together the first time. Though we needed to use leaves for lining to make sure that the pouches didn’t leak.”
“Good, I’ll need you to give a few each to Sebastion and Silas. They are quite capable of carrying a few at a time. Aren’t you two?”
“Yo, Uncle Horace, especially since Gasper, put two on each side of a stick. We can bring back enough water to take baths and get us through the dry days that are sure to come, as well.”
“Good, that will be your job this afternoon, and it must be done before the horses come up for a nap,” Uncle Redd added. “Festus, Tucker, can you have your warriors help carry water and keep an eye out for that cat, too?”
“Will do, Uncle,” Tucker answered for both of them.""

The story has great values, and treats pregnancy and mates with class and dignity. I saw that it's rated age 5-18, but I'm thinking age 8 or 9 might be a bit more appropriate only due to the number of characters, pregnancy and some of the larger words used. Otherwise its a fun book to read with fabulous dialogue and characters that will make you smile. There is nothing overtly scary, and the family groups together to fight all problems. What a great statement for everyone, children to adults, to read! In this day and age even adults need to read this kind of book and spread to children because compromise and working together is a skill that doesn't seem to be taught enough.

I absolutely loved each of these fanciful episodes in the epic tale about the journey of a colony of mice to a new home in Marta Moran Bishop's horse barn. These are wonderful tales for children who might even learn a little bit about civics and community but they're sophisticated enough to amuse an adult reader as well.
A for part story at a one part price.
