This is a very interesting book. I learned quite a bit about the topic, but the beginning was too much like a review of a biology class. The book was not boring though. I found myself not wanting to put it down at times, but to me, it was just a refresher.

Once you finished and got into that actual industry part of the book, it was much more informational. The three beginning chapters are of course an introduction. But they go into much more detail than a simple introduction. They explain every little thing you might have a question on. They describe everything from cells and DNA and they also go into great detail on what awaits you if you do decide to follow this career path. They started talking about how genetic modification is used and how it is useful. In chapter 5, they explain why mutations are "The Spice of Life." They not only cause problem like diseases, but they could be benificial. Ever heard about natural selection. This explains it and the importance of mutation. Also a bit on the technology that created the industry. In chapter 6, which explains the technology, it goes into great detail on engineering different types of bacteria. Scientists have to create a plasmid, and integrate with the bacteria. This is called a transformation. With this they can successfully turn the bacteria into a protein making powerhouse. They can also modify it to copy the function of a pre-existing bacteria, like the ones in your stomach.

I would recommend this book to anyone who knows nothing on the subject, or those that would want to refresh themselves on what the topic entails.

The Biotech Primer is an okay intro I suppose. But it's hard to tell for whom the book is meant. What was the point of the DNA 101 chapter - are there really that many people going into biotech who don't know what genes are? The latter chapters were useful overviews though - if that portion of the book had been 2-3 times longer than this would have been a really useful introduction.
