Analyzes the historical and psychological background of fashion trends from ancient Egypt to early twentieth-century America and provides pictorial descriptions of important costumes
This was my text for the college course I took (twice! second time was in graduate school just for fun & I got to teach a session when the instructor got called away suddenly) so it holds a special place in my heart. My go-to book when I need a quick refresher on a particular era. I also own the spiral bound supplement to this text: Period Patterns by Doris Edson with text by Barton. Simple patterns for garments from 1575 pour point & trunk hose to 1911 ladies reception suit.
Having studied costuming extensively now - let me forewarn anyone who runs into this book: it has incorrect and inaccurate information within it. Some is good, other is just downright wrong. Do not take it as the gospel.
This book is a great reference tool if you're writing (or editing) historical novels. It begins in ancient Egypt and covers many western periods in detail. Includes drawings.
