Apocalypse Redux #5

Apocalypse Redux, Book Five

Rate this book
The enemy has been discovered, the battlelines have been drawn, and the world will never be the same.

A major battle in downtown Hamburg has seen the metropolis practically leveled, demonstrating in the worst possible way how much power individuals can hold, and the world is reeling from the shock. But more members of the cult responsible for the catastrophe are still out there, and Isaac has resolved to hunt them all down, even if each attempt may unleash a fresh wave of violent calamity.

And the political responses to the situation are predictably ineffective regulation that lets real monsters grow in strength while strangling efforts to save the world.

Can Isaac fight against the whole world, working around the old order he’s trying to save while beating the cataclysm the [System] has brought with it—or will he be forced to watch humanity end for a second time?

This is fifth in a system apocalypse LitRPG series. Read in order.

You know what you are getting at this point. Isaac continues to build Earth's powerhouses, the ones he approves of, so they can handle "incidents". Incidents happen where buttkicking for goodness is needed. He's starting to move away from the "science" bit and more towards global infrastructure, but that's not a bad thing.

The bad guy cult is just as ridiculous as it was before. Okay, that's not true. It's slightly more ridiculous because they've lost some of their top cabal who have been replaced by new boss types and those guys weren't exactly paragons of stability before. Which, sure, I mean, you don't join a doomsday cult on promises of a cozy afterlife if you're a stable personality. Still.

And the author is a bit more free with side-jabs at current-world positions on things like climate change. He's not a complete partisan, but it doesn't escape notice that his internal beliefs all line up progressive and that his largest jabs are their political opposite. It's only a moment or two, but includes a specific party in Germany at one point so that threw me out of the story a bit.

The power fantasy is still strong and I'm still interested in the overall story of humanity trying to survive its stupidest impulses. But it's just a (solid) three stars and I don't see that progressing much. Which is fine by me. I'm definitely interested in the next book and not least because we must be nearing the culmination.

A note about Chaste: There's still zero indication that Isaac cares about anything so inconsequential as sex or intimate relations. So this is still very chaste.

Book 4 is usually a dropoff point for me when it comes to a series, so the fact I've completed volume 5 and everything was as enjoyable as ever is a good sign.

There wasn't anything too wild that happened in this book. It felt like a bit of a bridge to the next escalation that I'm hoping will come in volume 6. I don't have much to say other than that I'm looking forward to the next book!

Continue to truly enjoy this series. The best time travel, redemption story right now.

Still going strong.

But if this series tries to get too long, I see it all falling apart. I hope the ending was planned out from the start, and we start seeing the final arc.

Ok

This book was OK. It kind of feels like just more of the same. Nothing jaw-dropping really seemed to happen. He got stronger. A few stronger monsters showed up. He got closer to his friends. He still wants to save the world. The island seemed like it might be interesting, but it wasn't really. It is a good story and I do enjoy it, it's just not as breathtaking as those first few, I guess.

The monsters are getting tougher with world bosses being summoned and threatening the world however these are not the worst threat to be faced. Isaac is out to battle the cult who wrought total havoc on the city and though politics stand in his way he will make sure to take them all out since he had promised to save the world this time around. I love the majestic battles with monsters who are getting mightier with each book we read, and I loved the crazy island which just appeared out of the sea and was driving everyone insane, however I must admit that I did find this book to be too brutal and cruel in the attacks on the monsters, hated the nitty gritty details of their deaths. Can Isaac continue to fight the system with so much going against him and can he save the world in this re-run?

Thanks to this book I now know that the author doesn't like Germany's conservative party (whatever it is they stand for) and he approves of how masks and vaccines were enforced. Those are IRL politics I did NOT want to know about - they take you out of the story, and suddenly it's less about the fantasy story and more about the author shoe-horning in his personal politics.

Granted it didn't last for long, but it broke immersion for the book, and it was hard to really be invested after that in the book after that, because suddenly instead of listening to the story I'm now I'm subconsciously trying to figure out if I agree with the author.

Good continuation of the story

The.action was really great. It was funny to see them babysit politicians through a dungeon for levels. But the ending battle did give the reader some views of the MC's main opposition which I really liked to see. My one suggestion or ask would be for a summary of previous books in the beginning because these books are long. Enjoyable but long. But I found myself jumping between books before finishing this one. But that's a me thing. Looking forward to the the next book.

So good!!!

Extremely well written and really has a dull moment. The main character is both intelligent and make logical choices to love forward. Very interesting take in power progression fairly unique fi the genre. Can't stress how well written this series is, making the author seem a veteran if years with if writing. Don't pass up on this series or your missing out. Well worth the money.

I feel like things are going to get interesting. Feels a bit like the end of Season 1 with all the sneaky time skips the author put in to get us moving. I still like the series this one ran a little slow for me though. I do think that might change going forward. I missed the rest of his team getting anytime upfront we sort of got their backstories part 1 but all we ever heard now is that they are busy at conferences. Let's get them involved with actual speaking lines too.

There was a little bit of a drop-off for me on this one. The world building is still pretty good and the magic system is very interesting. There just wasn't much impactful that happened in this one. Some parts were interesting and others were kind of boring. It isn't bad but there also isn't anything outstanding that draws me in. I will continue the series but won't have it on the top of my reading list when it comes out.

I find it funny that I'm reading, what basically boils down to, a guy teaching people how to survive the apocalypse. What's more funny is that I'm enjoying it.

It's nice seeing a different take on an apocalypse scenario. Because things were handled quickly and responsibly, and information was given to the right people, this disaster was allowed to be integrated into everyday life, and not tear society down into the stoneage.

I will pick up the sequel.

This book was a major downgrade from the rest of the series. There is a lot of talking about how stupid people are and a lot of politicking. A lot of the tension from the early part of the series is gone and the MC is not really focused on progressing as much as he was before. The secret cult thing isn't doing it for me and the threat revealed at the end of this book just kind of made me shrug. I'm gonna read the next book and hope that it picks up again.

Another good entry. I like the amount of progress that the MC made. I am glad he is becoming one of the strongest people on Earth. I didn’t really care for the whole political plot. It is realistic, I just don’t like politics. I’m already excited for the next book.

Amazing Awesome Series

This story is of a guy who gets a redo to help humanity survive the System and the reintroduction of magic and monsters to Earth was fascinating and fantastic.

Made it just over 50% but it just failed to hold my attention. It's not a bad book, but it gets a three for not entertaining me. That sounds arrogant, but I read books like this for entertainment/escapism, and this failed to deliver.

This is book 5 in a fantasy LitRPG series relating to a system apocalypse set on Earth. Not really an apocalypse at this point as humanity is chugging along mostly. Isaac is still trying to prevent the possible future downfall of humanity.

Fun read

A decent good read for the genre and a continuation of the story that's been going on.

Honestly, we're at book 5 at this point. If you have made it this far, it's more of what you expect.

light on action

This was well written in general but there was very little action or plot progression. Most of the book focuses on minutiae.

decent continuation

This was a decent continuation of the story so far. I liked how this book focused more on the MC, but the last 10th of the book is just skill index…
