This book is a complete guide to photographing, developing, and creatively printing images of the landscape. Eddie Ephraums, an acclaimed photographer and printer, describes in detail the techniques he uses to create fine-art prints. A full guide to equipment, darkroom set-up, film processing, printing, and toning is included together with many examples and step-by-step instructions from the negative to the finished print. Landscape photography is not a passive process. It is a creative process, an opportunity to express ourselves in the form of an individually crafted print-utilizing the creative elements of photography. Also "Beyond Monochrome," "The Complete Photographer."
This has been the most inspiring photography book I have read in years. It demonstrates a number of landscape photographs taken by the author using, mostly, 35mm film coupled with darkroom printing and toning techniques. It's difficult to find good books detailing these old school processes in anything more than very basic terms and so this serves as a great technical manual but also includes so much more. For each image Ephraums discusses the entire process from pre-visualisation through to the end point of the image. He shares his mistakes with us and talks about things which he could do better in future. You are very much along for the journey with him and you realise that he hasn't yet reached the peak of his darkroom and photography process. He offers you a chance to jump on board at this point and go on the journey with him. Some sections I've already re-read and I'll continue to go back to sections again and again. Excellent book.
