A useful book for ramblers staying on the island of Mull, Highways And Byways In Mull And Iona gives detailed walks and directions for those wanting to explore the island on foot. There are simplified hand drawn maps with numbers referencing points of interest, and the annotations "C9 Druid's field" or "E3 Loch and Clach Sguabain" are easy to link up. Interspersed are interesting anecdotes and little comments on the history of the area. When used in conjunction with an Ordnance Survey walkers' map, say of the scale 1:25000, it adds interest and a focus of attention.
However, there are many adverts contained in the pages, and the photographs are extremely poor, rather letting the text down.
The title is a bit of a misnoma. There are 88 pages about Mull, but only 14 about the tiny island of Iona. Not recommended therefore as a guide to Iona, but useful as an interesting adjunct to touring Mull on foot.
