This is a very well illustrated book about a cat named Puss who helps his owner gain fame and get a castle. The cat at first wasn’t wanted by the owner but he sooner learned that Puss was very helpful.

1. Identifying the appropriate genre: Traditional Literature

2. Review/Summary: An easy-to-read retelling of the classic folktale about Puss, the faithful and ingenious cat, who makes his master a favorite in the eyes of the king--and the king's beautiful daughter.

3. Rating: 5 Stars

4. Writing Trait: Puss in Boots includes many writing traits:
a. Organization: The story hooks the reader, has a purpose and a logical structure, implements clear transitions and has a satisfying conclusion.
b. Voice: The voice of the story is entertaining; it includes age appropriate language (although a few words may need to be defined). Quotes are used throughout the book, and the story could be read by using different voices.
c. Word Choice: Words are chosen precisely and specificity is utilized throughout the story.
d. Conventions: Words are spelled consistently, grammar and punctuation are used correctly. The story is clear and easy to read.

5. Usage for Classroom Instruction: This book could be read aloud in a lower level elementary school classroom (K-2). I would use this book for classroom instruction to teach about conventions because this book is a little longer and contains all of the necessary elements of conventions (spelling words consistently, accurate paragraphs, effective punctuation, correct capitalizations and proper grammar usage). The book is easy to read and the sentences are clear. Additionally (dependent on the grade level), when reading the book aloud we could study certain vocabulary words that the students may not know (for example: cutlets, murmured, throne, partridges) and have a large group discussion about the meaning of these words.

6. Interest Level: K-2
