Tippy-Toe Chick, GO! by George Shannon is a story about a mom hen and her three little chicks who enjoy going to a garden every day to eat. However, on this particular day that they tried to go, there was a dog that did not want the hen and her chicks to get past. After multiple tries from the hen and older chicks, finally the little chick steps up for a turn. The momma hen and all the younger chicks either laugh or get scared because they believe that the little chick is not big or strong enough to get past the dog to the garden. In the end, the little chick perseveres and is able to reach the garden with the mom and siblings because it did not give up.

The overall theme of Tippy-Toe Chick, GO! is to be persistent throughout life’s challenges and to not give up even when the going gets tough even if others might not believe in you.

As I was reading this book, it reminded me of my past and all of the things that I have accomplished in my life that people said I wouldn’t be good at or able to pursue. The little chick could have listened to the older chicks and not tried to get to the garden, but it wanted a chance. If the little chick had never tried, who knows if they would have ever ended up at the garden. However, it doesn’t hurt to try and that’s what the little chick did.

I would recommend this book to children between the ages of four and eight because it shows perseverance. Whether the book is being read to a child at a younger age who can understand the meaning or a child is reading it their own, the message of this book gives hope to both the listener and the reader. The end of the book shows the momma hen and her chicks eating in the garden and that imagery created for the reader refers to not giving up on something regardless of if others think that you might fail.

Thanks for the book. We all have been enjoying it and it has earned a spot in the littlies book box in their bedroom. I also am thinking of using it in my Creative Movements dance class. I think my dancers would enjoy running around tippy toe like chick.

Mama Hen and her three little chicks are heading to the garden for breakfast just as they do every day, when they find a nasty surprise: a big scary dog lies between them and the garden! Mama Hen is ready to give up and wait for chicken feed (blech!) but her chicks aren't so fast to retreat, especially Little Chick. What chance does Little Chick have against a big dog though? Plenty when she puts her mind to it!

While the text doesn't rhyme or have strict rhythm throughout, there is an internally rhythmic feel to it that makes it fun to read aloud. Kids loved the barking of the dog and will be happy to join you both with the barking and the tippy-toe refrain (which I said in a teeny-tiny voice), but make sure your dog barking isn't too scary as tolerance for that will vary from audience to audience; I definitely saw a difference between toddlers and preschool, but I suspect familiarity with dogs may be a bigger factor. The fact that the smallest chick solves the problem when older siblings and even mom couldn't figure out how to get past the dog will suit young listeners to a T. Laura Dronzek's acrylic illustrations are bright, cheerful and despite only using a few lines, her chicken faces are very expressive. The layouts are varied, with some spreads being full-bleed while others feature spot art and yet others have framed scenes, although the frames don't always hold all the action, sometimes the characters break right out of the frame. This was an excellent choice for preschool, but I'd only use it for toddlers as a first book and if all the rest of my books were shorter.

Shannon, George, and Laura Dronzek. Tippy-toe Chick, Go! New York: Greenwillow, 2003. Print. Ages 8+ Tippy-Toe Chick, Go is a really fun book to read. This story has five main characters. Four Chickens, as well as a dog. This book is a story that describes and goes through the journey of four chickens wanting to get food as well as getting past their obstacle, which is the dog. The first two smaller chickens didn't make it through, but the smallest one made it through because he was so fast and he made it so that he slid right by and made the dog wrap the chain around the tree. I really liked this book because it kept my attention and it was an easy read. The picture in this book were also fun, so that is what made it a fun book to read as well. Personally, it made me kind of scared, because I didn't know what was going to happen to the smallest chicken, so keeping my attention through a children's book I think in turn means that this is a really enjoyable book for me.

This story is about a Hen and her two little chicks. Every day after the dew is gone they go to the garden and get their favorite food. Those were sweet itty-bitty beans and potato bugs. One day after they finished their chores they went to get their favorite treat but something was in their way. A dog would not let them through. The littlest chick had a good idea to run as fast as she could so the dog would chase her. She ran around the tree until the dog got tangled. Then they were able to get there treat and have a happy day. The illustrations are bright and full of color. They are attractive and inviting. A teacher could have this book in their reading corner or they can use this just to teach about animals. I am not really sure what class lesson this could go with but it teaches to be brave.

A hen and her three chicks, Big, Middle and Little, are taking their daily walk to the garden for a treat. On this day, along the way, they encounter a dog which has no intention of letting them pass. Big and Middle Chick each take a turn trying to scare the dog away. Each is unsuccessful. Then Little Chick tries. Little Chick is fast and is able to make the dog tie himself around a tree, thus enabling the family to get around the dog and into the garden for their treat.

Not a great book, but cute.

Hen would always take her chicks to the garden to eat. Today there was a dog that would not let them by so they would just have to wait for the chick feed. They were all disappointed. The two older ones tried but nothing worked. The littlest chick asked to try and ran toward the dog that chased her around the tree. She called time to eat and they happily followed. This is a great book to build self-esteem because no matter of your size you can still always accomplish things.

This was a cute book and I liked it until the end. I felt bad for the dog wrapped around the tree with his leash. I liked the pictures but because I felt bad for the dog...I couldn't rate it higher.
