Isabelle, André Gide
Andre Gide is a very famous French author. He was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947. Isabelle was one of his more famous novels and was originally published in 1911. Although this novel was published over 100 years ago, no one in today's modern world will be confused by the actions and emotions of the characters in the story which are timeless. Certainly the obsessive infatuation of a young man for a beautiful woman, which is the main theme of the book, i

Reading and reviewing Brendan Connell's The Translation of Father Torturo, with its themes of Catholicism and amorality, left me fancying a little Gide, and so here I am. A review of an established classic such as this seems rather redundant, and indeed part of my reason for reading it was to read something I wouldn't have to formally review, giving me a chance to catch up on all those reviews that are currently unfinished. But reading this book was a revelation to me, for reasons noted at the e ...more

A nicely done Gide novel of the Strait is the Gate era, but not so good as that book. The Floches and Saint-Auréols are very memorable characters, but the narrator’s obsession with the Isabelle of the title, the disgraced and absent bad-girl daughter of the family, drives the tale. The point of the whole thing seems to be that while moral taint may lend a little glamor to a desirable object at a distance, all bets are off when the object approaches nearer and becomes an actual person.

In Isabelle, Gide explores a love based on pure fantasy. The central character, Gerard Lacase, finds himself staying in a house he had visited many years early. Infatuated by a photograph, he becomes obsessed with learning more. "I was still not aware of how strongly events can conceal from us what at first looks interesting and how compelling they are to someone who does not know how to resist them."

As in his other writing, Gide is a master of prose. Two very quotable lines are:

I found this book by accident in a donation made to my thrift shop. I was intrigued by the brief description taped from its original jacket in the front of the book.
I found it ironic that a novel written over 100 years ago about a man falling in love from a picture of a beautiful woman was exactly what happens in our world today via dating apps and social media.

This story was told with a sense of romance and mystery which is a always a great read.

O sıralarda doktoram için Bousset’in (1) vaazlarının kronolojisi üzerine br tez hazırlıyordum.

kudos to andre gide for lowkey disapproving lacase falling in love with a 10 year old portrait. short and sweet, just the piece to read when you're feeling guilty at 3 am for not reading a few days. on the other hand, this review is exactly the proof you need to say that i lack in critical thinking skills and reading time and respect for well known authors.

“When I found myself alone in my bedroom that evening, an intolerable anguish embraced my soul and body. My boredom had become almost like fear. A wall of rain separates me from the rest of the world, far from all passion, far from life, and is closing me in a gray nightmare. I am with strange beings who are barely human, who have cold and discolored blood, and whose hearts stopped beating a long time ago. I opened my suitcase and looked at my train schedule. A train! At any hour of the day or night, it does not matter! I am smothering here.   My” 0 likes
“The devastation of the lumberjacks appeared more atrocious at this time of year when everything is getting ready to come back to life. In the warm air some twigs were already growing, some buds were opening, and each branch that had been chopped was crying with sap. I advanced slowly, not feeling so sad because I was exalted by the pain of the countryside, feeling a bit gray perhaps by the strong vegetal odor that the dying trees and the earth exhaled. I was barely sensitive to the contrast of these dead trees with the renewal of springtime. In this state the park was more open to receive light which bathed and gilded both what was dead and what was alive. However, from far away the tragic song of the axes filled the air with a funeral solemnity, secretly” 0 likes
