Gift-Wrapped Romance

One Small Secret

Rate this book
Ruben Palmer is on every woman’s Christmas wish list. Except mine.

I grew up with him and bested him in practically everything we did together–debate, grades, mini-golf, you name it. So I’ve built an immunity to his boy-next-door charm. Sure, sometimes I might accidentally type his name into my search engine, but his dimples, hotel empire and thirst-trap photos don’t tempt me. I’ve got my sights set on earning my way to the top of the Palmer Hotel empire, and nothing is going to get in my way.

Until my step-sister leaves her secret toddler with me before skipping town for three months. Now suddenly everyone thinks he’s mine, and instead of powering my way to the top, I’m struggling to not get fired. And instead of Ruben staying on the executive floor where he belongs, he’s invading my apartment, breaking dates with starlets, and looking disappointed that I decided to settle down with anyone except him.

But I know Ruben, and Ruben doesn’t settle down. So there's no way I’m giving him my heart. Not even for Christmas.

**One Small Secret is inspired by the classic films, Bachelor Mother and Bundle of Joy, and is part of the Gift-Wrapped Romance series. All five cozy Christmas novels can be read in any order.

Bear with me for a minute or two… because a review in the middle of the night, after reading a book in one sitting and not getting a wink of sleep, always tend to be quite… interesting, if not a little over the top enthusiastic.

But this was fantastic! It was funny, addictive, very well paced, and amazingly well written.

I just loved the plot, the MMCs were fantastic, the banter, the funny scenes and the so sweet I could die of jealousy moments, were perfect.

Okay, it has its own letdowns, the xmassy side wasn’t that xmassy. The sister story was… disappointing. And the baby could have had more spotlight. And the misscommunication… 👀 but still, I loved it, and it deserves all my stars.

(Let’s see if I’m still thinking like that after a good night’s rest)

Okay, friends! This book is irresistible from start to finish!

"Since when did you start calling me Ms. Crane? I crushed you in the third-grade spelling bee."

This book is everything we as readers have come to expect and love from Esther Hatch. I went into this one completely blind and that One Small Secret had me cracking up and left me binge reading until the end in one sitting (not to mention late into the night...Pro Tip: start this one in the daylight hours) to see how this one would end.

I loved the grew-up together, rivals/frenemies vibe mixed with undeniable attraction and some unforced, but close proximity this book had going on. I loved reading about how connected these two have been their whole life and then watch that friend vibe start to shift!

'If only the lady next to me could have seen him in high school. He wasn't even that cool...'
...
'It really isn't fair. I could look like a million bucks too, you know...if I had a million bucks.'

This one is funny and witty, swoony and romantic and an all around enjoyable holiday read!!
Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Content: Christmas romance, banter, competition, family drama/dynamics, kisses only.

Audiobook update:
I loved this book just as much the second time!! I loved the narrator and would definitely listen to another book narrated by her.

"I am not, nor have I ever; chased Ruben Palmer. He has pretty much half of the women on earth in love with him, and I'm not adding my name to that list." sums up how Cadence feels about Ruben. They were rivals in high school and now he's her boss. The boss who sent her to work in Vietnam for 3 years and never contacted her the entire time she was there. Now Cadence is back working at company headquarters and she's going to "prove herself"! Cadence proving herself doesn't quite go as she expected thanks to a little something her step-sister left at her apartment--baby Axley, the nephew Cadence didn't know existed.

There were so many things I loved about this story:
🎄 Witty banter ❤️
🎄 The frenemies vibe
🎄 Dictionary of Difficult Words
🎄 Christmas Eve with Axley
🎄 Ruben falls first ❤️
🎄 All the swoony kisses ❤️
🎄 Cadence finally admitting her feelings for Ruben
🎄 The trip to NYC ❤️

Not only does Esther Hatch write wonderful historical romances but now she's written a contemporary romance and it's got everything I love about her writing--great chemistry between the main characters, witty banter and all the swoony kisses you could possibly want. You need to clear your calendar, get your snacks together and cozy up with this book because it's better than any Hallmark Christmas movie!!

I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Bring on the Christmas books! I am so happy to start off the Christmas season with this amazing book from Esther Hatch! I am a fan of her historical novels and let me tell you she knocked it out of the park with her first contemporary novel!

Ruben and Cadence go way back to high school and there has always been some rivalry between them, especially now after she is back from working in Vietnam and working at Ruben’s familie’s company. He is a part of the Palmer Hotel Empire. Cadence has kept an eye on Ruben in the tabloids but Ruben has completely ghosted her for the past 3 years. Until Cadence's step sister leaves her baby in Cadence’s care. Now everyone thinks the baby is Cadence’s and Ruben suddenly wants to spend Christmas Eve with them.

Oh my! This one is super heartwarming and full of everything I have come to love about Esther Hatch’s books, amazing chemistry, the swooniest kisses, fun banter, and witty humor. The premise was unique and interesting and had me turning the pages so fast! I am a huge fan of fake dating and celebrity romances so this had the best of both worlds for me, along with the family dynamic that baby Axley added that made for many sweet scenes. I love that Ruben fell first and was looking for something real that he found with Cadence. Cadence was such a fun character. I adored her! She made me laugh and warmed my heart. I love her Christmas Eve sweatshirt tradition that reminded her of her dad each year. I really enjoyed the Christmas Eve and New Years Eve that Ruben and Cadence spent together. I won’t be able to stop thinking about those scenes for a long time! This book had me smiling and sighing as I read. If you are looking for a binge worthy Christmas read, this is it!

Favorite Moments:
•Mug gift
•Holding hands
•Axley’s first Christmas
•Christmas Eve
•Falling asleep on the couch
•New Years Eve
•“She's my mom. She's allowed to be delusional about my romantic prospects.”
•Twilight reference
•Swoony kisses

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am really enjoying the books I have read in the Gift-Wrapped Romance Series. And I am a big fan of Esther’s books.
There are some great tropes in this book that I enjoyed.
I really liked that Ruben was the one that fell first. I enjoyed the connection between the town and Cadence and Ruben’s families. There is a fun connection with the mysterious “MRS” like in Anneka R Walker’s book MERRY KISMET. And I am always on board for a friends to more trope.
I really enjoyed Christmas Eve Cadence and Ruben spent together and little Axley was so sweet. The events that took place after were fun to read. There were some funny and endearing moments in this book. Cadence was written well and she was so funny. I was laughing many times throughout reading.
I received an eARC from the author all views and opinions expressed are mine.

It's time again to read all the Christmas books! This new one from Esther Hatch is part of The Gift Wrapped Series. I've almost read all of them and let me tell you, I am loving each one of them! They're all full of delightfully imperfect characters who are spunky and full of life. And the storylines have kept me turning the pages and completely engrossed and invested in this series. And we definitely can't forget all the sweet and swoony scenes throughout each book.

Have you read Esther's historical novels? They're fantastic! And I'm happy to report that she hit it out of the ballpark with her first contemporary novel! She's kept all of her signature style from the humor to the chemistry to her great kiss writing abilities. (Just ask authors Sarah M. Eden, Traci Hunter Abramson and Sian Ann Bessey about this) *winks*

Cadence is a hoot! Her constant quips had me giggling and sometimes cheering her on, or ducking me head in embarrassment. She's funny and kind and loyal, which can get her into trouble sometimes. Like the fact that she is now taking care of her step-sister's baby and somehow letting everyone think that Axley is her son to protect his mom. Which of course creates all kinds of scenarios and situations.

But my, oh my, just you wait until Ruben shows up once he hears the rumors that she has a son. Talk about melting your heart. Watch for all the subtle facial clues when reading that scene. *sigh*

Ruben and Cadence have been in a bit of a rivalry since they were young. And it just keeps going now that she's back from working in Vietnam for Ruben's family's company. There's definitely trouble brewing and you're going to love it all! That first meet-cute, well maybe I should call it a re-meet-cute, had me laughing and a little mortified for Cadence. Hahaha!

This book is pure Christmas magic, full of sweet and clean romance, swoony moments, tender moments, family vibes and much, much more! I loved it all! Now excuse me while I go find a mug for hot cocoa and a mounted singing fish just because. ;-)

Content: Clean. A minor mention of drugs for a secondary character who stopped and cleaned up. A baby out of wedlock. Some kisses but nothing further.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Swoony kisses and babies 😍

What's not to love about swoony kisses and an adorable toddler baby?
That's right. Nothing.

Because it's perfection!

This book was a fun twist on the secret baby trope, and the rivals to lovers. Throw in a little fake dating, meddling grandpa, and family drama and you have this perfect book.

It's in a single point of view from Cadence, but it was so well done that I totally feel like I got to know Ruben Palmer without even needing to read a chapter from his perspective. He was swoony and man oh man his declaration of his feelings. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

That's all I'm gonna say about that!

💋Swoony kisses
⚠️Cadence's dad passed away off page in the past. Moira has some issues in her past too.

(4.5 stars) - definitely quirky & totally fun!

Cadence is a total shark at the beginning of the story & I was wondering how that was going to play out - thinking maybe something like Diane Keaton's character in "Baby Boom" - but no, much better. Part of the fun is watching how her mental & emotional cover begins unraveling, and we see more & more of the real Cadence being revealed as the truth behind everything that led to her crisis point begins unraveling & being revealed too. And there's a sweet & swoony romance underneath it all! Happy sigh!

*Romance level: passionate kisses, nothing graphic

So much fun!

This was such a fun read! Full of laughter, snark, witty bantering, and so much swoon, I just enjoyed this story. The characters were so fun and I really loved reading from Cadence’s point of view. There were kisses that made my toes curl in delight and sass from Cadence that has me snorting in laughter. A really good read!

There's nothing better than a sweet and swoony Christmas romance!

Cadence has been in a fierce competition with Ruben for most of her life and now she's back in the same company building, vying for a place at the top, until she discovers a little bundle of a surprise named Axley that her step-sister leaves behind.

I would have loved to see this story in a dual POV so I could get right into Ruben's head. He was an enigma for the first part of the story and I was very intrigued by his character, but boy, oh, boy was I completely surprised by him and his true self. The hesitant banter and witty connections, along with the delicious Christmas kisses, were as decadent as a box of expensive holiday chocolates, and Hatch writes them oh, so well.

One little secret...well, there were several secrets that all added up to a delightfully charming holiday romcom that stole my heart, wisps at a time.

Things to love:
🎄celebrity romance
🤶🏻Mrs Claus magic
🎄"single parent"
🎄enemies-to-love
🎄second chance
🎄SWOON galore
🎄Teen Heartthrob smile
🎄difficult word definitions

Content: mild+ romance (kisses, implied relations, light innuendo)

Should have called CPS within the first couple chapters, but alas I guess the rest of the book would not have happened. No follow ups with the villains in this book - did they get what they deserved? Idk we didn’t talk about it. Would I recommend? Yep, 10/10 recommend. Holiday books aren’t supposed to make sense!

I have long been a fan of Esther Hatch, so when I heard she was writing a contemporary romance I could not be more excited! This Holiday romance was quirky and fun with characters whose chemistry was off the charts in true Esther Hatch fashion. I loved the sparring banter! Cadence and Ruben’s chemistry was like a magnet just pulling me further into the story. This author can most definitely write the kind of kissing scene that gives all the sizzle without the spice if you know what I mean! The plot was unique and included some favorite tropes, but tackled them in an out of the ordinary way. It kept the story from becoming predictable which was great! When Cadence and Ruben are on the page the sparks just fly! The last chapters of this book are just giddy happy romance squeal good! I will not spoil, but there might be a happily ever after. If you are looking for a light and romance filled Holiday read this one would be a great addition to your reading list!

One Small Secret was such a cute Christmas book. It's very rare for me to like both main characters from the start. Ruben and Cadence grow on you even more as the story progresses. I loved the concept of them being friends almost all their lives. There is something extra special about two people who have known each other all of their lives and falling in love.

This novel is all about misunderstandings, celebrity crush, fake dating, a cute baby named Axley, and second-chance romance. Many moments keep you smiling because of the witty dialogue. There are also moments of kissing that light up the room. The end of the book had one of my favorite scenes that included a little black dress, a handsome man in a tuxedo, and a New Year's Eve dance that makes your heart melt.

I have to say, I was very impressed with Author Esther Hatch's first foray into contemporary romance. This clean swoony romance is the perfect thing to read on a cold winter's night.

I’m a great admirer of Esther Hatch and her books. This one didn’t disappoint. It was full of fun and mischief. My favorite scene was when Cadence arrived at the corporate planning meeting. I don’t know how authors come up with such humorous circumstances, but I’m sure glad they do! Esther has a great sense of humor and comedic timing.

This was a he falls first, friends to more, mistaken identity (the baby) romance. The Christmas Eve scene was so sweet and heart melting and the aftermath provided lots of misunderstandings, consequences and revelations.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Christmas Romance and will gladly read anything written by this author.

This was the perfect length and the cutest romance! Cadence comes back to town working towards a promotion only to find out she's back in town at the same time as her boss... Ruben, the guy who sent her away years ago. They used to be close, competitive friends, but that ended when she left. And they never kept in touch. Now he’s back in her life just as her sister drops a baby on her doorstep, throwing everything off.

Suddenly Ruben is way more interested in her, and he’s clearly thrown by the idea she might have settled down. Cadence has no clue what to think, especially with their messy past. And with a baby to care for, falling for her boss is definitely not the smart move. Plus, he's the jet setting millionaire that everyone wants, is he even really interested in her? And why did he send her away in the first place?

The forced proximity, the misunderstandings, the slow unpacking of their history...I loved all of it. And Esther always delivers great chemistry and kisses, so of course this was SO, so good!

WHEW! Whew whew! I don’t think I could love this more!! (Actually if we had this whole story, but from Rueben’s perspective I think I might die!)

I was worried about the baby/ready made family storyline for a minute (it’s not my favorite personally) but Y’ALL! This one was so cute! So good! It led to the such a great relationship!

I loved Cadence’s spunk and sass. While she had some competitive tendencies, I thought it made her a fun character. She started off a little rough around the edges, but quickly became a soft, yet strong, character. I really did enjoy her arc!

Reuben was literally perfection. (100% fictional, but so great!!) He was so sweet and thoughtful and just…yummy! He was humble, but also knew his appeal and his power.

They WERE FABULOUS! And seriously I’m obsessed with this story.

5/5 stars!

Random fact of the day: there are only 42 more days until Christmas. Therefore, it is perfectly acceptable to start reading Christmas books, yes? Yes. This is the way.

Let me just tell you friends - this story is adorable. It had everything you could ever want in a story, like laugh out loud moments, swoony kisses, a friends to lovers/workplace romance, and the magic of the holidays. Seriously what is there not to love here??

Cadence and Ruben were the cutest. I loved watching them reconnect after years apart and find their happily ever after. They are such likable characters that you can't help but cheer for them from the start.

Moral of the story here is that y'all need this book in your lives. If this book isn't already on your TBR list, it should be.

Many thanks to the author for the early copy; all thoughts are my own.

Perfectly Awkward and Delightful

When Cadence’s stepsister leaves her baby and asks Cadence not to tell anyone his origins, Cadence’s life gets complicated. All of a sudden, her coworkers think the baby was hers all along from her recent stint working abroad.

Assumptions are made, hilarity follows. I loved the awkward scenes and conversations and the relationship between Cadence and Reuben. The bantering was superb, as were the sweet nuggets from their shared history. This is my favorite Christmas book this season!

If you’re looking for another great author who also puts her heroines into embarrassing situations, try Janette Rallison’s books.

Sigh, where should I start? The unnecessary lying? The inexplicable urge romance writers seem to have to describe how hot and rich a guy is every other sentence, while making sure you know the protagonist doesn’t understand her own appeal the rest of the time? The fact that all of the conflict between the leads is just a misunderstanding a five minute conversation could fix?

I’ve seen a lot of complaints about women written by men, but this book has the same problem in reverse — men written by women. The way Ruben behaves is just so ridiculous it’s absurd and unbelievable.

There is the occasional cute moment and it is a quick read, but the absurdity outweighs the positives in my book.

This book is part of the Gift-Wrapped Romance series. Each book is written by a different author and they are completely standalone stories.

I am familiar with Esther Hatch's historical romances and love them. She brought her writing talents and made them shine in this contemporary romcom.

I felt like this was a fresh plot and a bit of a twist on the surprise baby trope. That is one of my least favorite tropes, but with the twist this one had, I wasn't as put off by it as I normally would be. I went in completely blind as to the plot. And I am a fan of some of the other tropes this book contained.

I really liked both Cadence and Ruben but I did have a little trouble connecting with some of Ruben's motivations at times. Overall this was an enjoyable listen. I did have to take a break of almost 2 days before I could finish the last 25%. That may have taken me out of the story a bit. I know I was really invested while listening for the first 75%. Life just didn't allow me to complete it at one time.

I did listen to this and was pleasantly surprised to hear one of my favorite narrators, Noah Wall, doing the reading. This is the first time I've heard her read contemporary. Somehow that made me keep wanting to put Cadence and Ruben in Regency England! 😂

This book is instantly captivating! Reuben was the perfect male main character! He did a good job hiding his true feelings until the party and you saw how long he's been in love with Cadence and the sincerity is swoony. I loved the Twilight references (middle school throwback!) and grandpa Ben! Also the gift Reuben gave her and how it popped up later in the book too, total swoon!
