Billionaires in Charge #2

Manhattan State of Mind

Rate this book
I wake up in the hospital with no memory of the past year. The last thing I remember? JP Wolfe, my brooding billionaire boss, threatening to fire me in front of the entire tech team.

But now, as I return to work, fumbling with amnesia, something’s changed. Wolfe’s intense gaze lingers on me, making my heart race and my cheeks flush.

I’m just your average tech girl with a serious comic book addiction while he’s the infamously cold, ruthless co-founder of a hotel empire. And let’s not overlook that he’s the kind of smoldering hot that makes you forget your own name. There’s no way a man like him could be harboring secret feelings for someone like me… is there?

As I scramble to rebuild my lost memories, I realize Wolfe is hiding secrets he doesn’t want me to uncover. What happened during my missing year? And why is Wolfe determined to stop me from finding out?

Manhattan State of Mind is a dual-point-of-view, standalone, romantic comedy with spice, banter, and a happily ever after.

I am complete a sucker for the asshole boss trope.
And then you add in amnesia?
Pfffft.

Sign me up. All day long, kiddos.

I thought this was cute. The main characters had great chemistry.
And there was a decent grovel.

Well, the whole performance felt off.
The characters were indifferent to me, the storyline was not fully developed and some things were not presented or explored.
Moreover, the romance didn’t meet my expectations.
This story could have been shorter and not that lengthy.

I loved how it started 🤷🤷😂 she wants a promotion and gets passed over for someone else. Her boss apparently has the hots for her (it was implied....ish?). Shes out from falling down the stairs and wakes up to find herself with retrograde amnesia a year later. She was 26, then wakes up to be 27. Ok cool cool so far

AND THEN, you never really find out what happens in that fucking year!!!!!.what the fuck!? We never get to find out how they came to be?! What's the fucking point of this romance book then? I want to find out how the cold assholely boss fell in love and what she did to make him fall.in love and vice versa. Dis some BULLSHEET.

And he goes from a druggie, maybe partying Vegas bachelor to meditating and doing yoga???! LOLOLOLOLOLOL

This book had so much potential. The premise was there and the characters but what ruined it (for me) was the lack of context concerning their actual first relationship. How had they gotten together? What kind of love did they have? The ups and downs? The fights? Anything.

We got nothing.

We never got a scene where we saw them together before her accident. We were just told vaguely about moments they shared.

It would have worked so much better if we had been able to go through that journey too. I could have cared a lot more about the relationship and the end result.

I also hated HATED the fact that JP was given drug/alcohols addiction on top of being a manwhore and then on top of that we get him being FILMED HIGH WITH NAKED WOMEN AROUND HIM.

JP promises he never cheated on her nor slept with anyone that night but let’s be real. What would he remember?? HE DID NOT EVEN RECOGNIZE HER that same night when she showed up so what good is his word? I would not take his word for it and honestly doubt the legitimacy of his memory. He only remembers that she was there because of their fight later and the video.

His constant battle for Vegas and that life was understandable since he is an addict. He also was madly in love with her, and I admired him for wanting to get better, taking the right steps towards that, and sticking to it.

Why did that have to be his vice? It just seemed like there was so much we were not aware of and when we were, it was too late to care?

Her not remembering the past year led to everything they shared being erased and honestly I disliked the past of herself too much either. She never acknowledged him to her closest friends and family. He was her dirty secret.

I might get that the author wanted us to experience the lack of memories like the FMC does but on the other side we had JP talking about everything and their time together in every other chapter sooooooo yea.
It would have worked better if we never had JP's POV and we were UNAWARE of their relationship to make it more meaningful when things fall into places then get a good glimpse into their past once she remembered.

Such a missed opportunity in my eyes.

It was just a mess and I felt like this book was too dramatic.

Interestingly, though I didn't plan it this way, this book is yet another chick-lit romance after my previous read being Coldhearted Boss. And more interesting still, I have almost the same comments to make. Namely, that the writing was competent, the plot was interesting (with a nice take on the Amnesia trope), the humour was ok, the characters were not perfect but had charm.

It would have rated on par with Coldhearted Boss, if the following aspects had been tackled:

In sum, not a bad book. I would probably have rounded up if at least the book had been efficiently trimmed down with better pacing. But this is an author that I may revisit in the future.

P.S. Baader-Meinhoff phenomenon alert: two side characters, Taylor and Brody - throwback to Coldhearted Boss!

3⭐️ probably generous as I skim read quite a lot of this towards the end.

Amnesia trope isn’t for me anyway I don’t think but I didn’t like how for the most part, it felt like this book was ‘catching up’, we’re waiting for Lucy to remember what happened. We missed out on the majority of the relationship development because she can’t bloody remember, which I get is the point but I didn’t massively root for either of them or their relationship as a result.

The story had a lot of potential but the amnesia side of it ruined things for me.

The first time I've read a book where a h has my actual job. Unfortunately that couldn't elevate my rating for this book and honestly this is more of a me problem than the books. You see, second chance romances are my least favourite trope.

Second chance romances for me miss out on that first time for everything, sexual tension, will they or won't they, does the H like the h etc etc

We get the first introduction at the start and then Lucy has amnesia for the rest of the book so we miss the whole part about how they first got together. I would love to know what happened for JP to go from threatening to fire her to being deeply in love with her. Even from his POV we never get that answer and we never really get to see his characters growth from drug taking playboy to reformed, deeply in love with Lucy, wellness retreat going nice guy. I wanted to see asshole JP and get at least a better view of their fresh relationship even if it was only from his POV.

I feel like I'm chasing the high I had from the first book by this author. I loved the h in that book and the banter was hilarious but Lucy was just kind of... flat. I didn't find their banter all that funny but mostly kind of cheesy.

I do think this was well written and my issues mostly come from the fact that second chance romances just leave me a lot underwhelmed and cold. Add in the amnesia and it felt off balance when switching between the two POVs. Lucy obviously knows nothing about JP and their relationship whereas JP is in love with her and knows all but of course we don't get to know all because he conveniently guards his POV chapters.

TLDR: I wanted to know how they first got together, I wanted to understand why JP loved her so much and I wanted to feel more pain or something when it all blew up.

Quickish Review

I wanted to love this and the setup is great but somewhere along the way it tries to be all things to all readers and it loses momentum. Like the amnesia trope had me hooked. Workplace romance with a billionaire? I am here for it.

But it suffered from not showing me how they connected before her accident, instead only telling it to me through JP’s longing and he was too busy lying to her. Even at the end, I would have been ok with it had there been more flashbacks to really give me a sense that she loved him, not just in lust with him. The sexual connection? Solid. The emotional one? One sided. And amidst all the angst it was also trying to be cute and quirky and a little rom-com but also dealing with vague addiction issues, and it doesn’t quite gel. I just wish it would have chosen cute or angsty or serious and went all in on that.

Now having said this, I did read it quickly and I do think there’s some good scenes, and even with my quibbles I would read more from this author, so if the tropes sound good to you, or you’re a fan of this author, it may work better for you than it did for me.

I mean I knew this was going to be good but DAMN. Rosa you have done it again.

I finished this book in a day so if that tells you anything at all you need to pick this book up.

Insanely addictive. HOT. Characters with off the charts chemistry. A brooding billionaire of a love interest and a funny and lovely MC with amnesia to match.

I’ve never read a story like this and I LOVED it. One day Lucy wakes up in the hospital after a fall and has forgotten a year of her life. A year in which she fell in love with JP, one of the founders of the company she works for. JP decided to withhold this information whilst she recovers and instead tries to make her fall for him all over again (whilst also keeping the secret as to why things ended before she was injured).

I quite literally could not put this book down. I loved both our main characters so much and the mystery around the breakup was so exciting to wait for.

Now where’s the next one…?

Not to be dramatic but this book made me regret learning to read... JK LOL, but…. this was just SO dumb. It was rushed and skipped over so many important parts.

Sorry but it just made no sense and the author was constantly “telling rather than showing” scenes. I had a headache by the end 😬😬. I ended up skimming this because I obv needed the FMC to get her memories back !! If it wasn’t the amnesia trope, I’d DNF.

In retrospect, I wish I got amnesia like the FMC and forgot I ever read this monstrosity 😅😬

I felt this was an amnesia trope done wrong. My least favorite book out of this author. Even though i was looking forward to JP's story.

It starts with her waking up not remembering, and then her boss trying to woo her again because supposedly they were in love. We don't know anything on how they met, got together, etc, only that he wants to win her back.

I wish we would have had it start with the amnesia, and than the rest of the story told in back-flash so we could see their love story evolve. It would've been more meaningful.

Manhattan State of Mind by

I was so happy to be given ARC copy of this book by Rosa after reading her other book I couldn’t wait to delve into this opposites attract, office romance.

Lucy and JP story is a must-read book, Rosa has written these two characters perfectly, Lucy the average tech girl who has serious comic book addiction and the Brooding Billionaire boss JP Wolfe tell their story with a duel POV with poor Lucy waking up in hospital after a fall she is suffering with amnesia we get to see what has happened in the last year.

Hold on to your hat as we get taken a journey that I loved and I’m holding my hands up I did fall in love with JP Wolfe some might not.

All in all, this book hit every spot for me 5 stars read,

Rosa, you have done it again I didn’t want to put this book down another great book hoping book 3 in Connor story

I was really hooked after the first two chapters. I really wanted to know everything about what the hell happened, how they got where they got, etc.
But than the middle part happened between 25-80% i dragged myself through this book…
I couldn’t see the same Lucy before and after her accident. How got they together? No clue, still. How did their relationship emerge? No clue, again. There are still so many questions. After 80% finally there was some development. The end was good. But i have to admit i wasn‘t invested after this ongoing back and forth…

Nao foi o que estava a contar. Gostei bastante.

A Lucy e o JO conquistaram-me.

*SPOILERS FOR FIFTH AVENUE FLING*

“Can’t she see how utterly undone I am?” - Manhattan State of Mind by Rosa Lucas

One moment, Lucy is barely able to keep her job after a poor introduction with the big boss, JP Wolfe. The next, she wakes up in a hospital one year later and learns she has amnesia. Everything seems to be the same, except for Wolfe, who looks at her differently. Every encounter hints that something happened between them, but is Lucy ready for the truth?

It’s about time we had an amnesia romance on the Smut Archive, and oh, how “Manhattan State of Mind” delivers that in full loads of angst and a MMC doing his utmost not to kiss the girl he’s in love with. This billionaire boss romance asks the question of if love can strike twice or will always be doomed to fail. But as we wait for that answer to be revealed, get ready for some sexy, steamy, and downright OSHA-violating violations between our couple.

JP Wolfe is a unique type of the “he fell first” trope, having spent a year already in a relationship with Lucy. Now given a new chance to make things right, he goes out of his way to show he is a man worthy of her love, though some actions hold hurtful secrets behind the curtains. Readers will be torn about his approach to keeping the catalyst behind Lucy’s amnesia a secret (no cheating or pushing thankfully), but through the story, many will love his dedication and absolute adoration of our leading lady. May we all wish for a JP Wolfe in our lives (without the secret, of course).

As for Lucy herself, I really did enjoy her character. Quick-witted, funny, and seeing the world with new-ish eyes, our heroine is easy to slip into (especially with the spicy scenes). However, what I had trouble with was her allowing her insecurities and trust issues win her over again and again. Heavy spoilers:

It did take me some time to cozy to the idea that Lucy and Wolfe were heading into HEA territory, as Wolfe’s big secret and Lucy’s heavy trust issues are active obstacles to their love story. However, the ending did convince me that even with slip-ups and doubts, this couple is ready for the big love leagues.

Final Smut Archive assessment: Stretchy super-suits are always the way to go.

Unfortunately I was a little disappointed in the book. We never learned how they fell in love from the get go. Heroine is not really likeable even after cutting her some slack for her health issues. I am in general a fan of the author and was a fan of killians story but unfortunately JPs & Lucy’s story was lacking. As a reader I did not actually get suck into their story. I could tell the author was amazing for her typical spice and heat in this book as well but unfortunately it missed the mark for me. Not a bad read but by far not the best of her books. Hope connors story is next and will be better again :)

letdown in the end 🙁

I liked first 65% but then it got a bit repetitive with jp just wanting her back. Honestly we don’t even get to see what’s so great about her, or why he loves her. So when it got to the third act angst it was anti climactic and I personally thought Lucy was overreacting. It felt like a one-sided relationship on his side. And the way what he dis what built up I thought it was gonna be worse. Also, it sounded like she was a very self-centred partner during their relationship.

I usually like this author!

I just couldn't get into this story - maybe because it would have been better as just heroine POV? Or maybe because the slow burn was missing from one half of the duo? Maybe the simpering heroine was a bit too lacking in personality? I don't know why I didn't enjoy it, but I reluctantly 'threw in the towel' at 55%, when I had to force myself to pick up my book. Better books are available by this author, so check them out!

Intriguing Premise, Poorly Executed.

The premise for this story sounded really interesting. The execution however left a lot to be desired. The plot dragged on and became very repetitive. Lucy was basically a doormat and all the characters were exceedingly immature. A tiresome read overall.

i agree with another review i've read, i wish it was a more linear story. id have liked to know how their relationship started and progressed
ill be honest i did skip and skim through a bit because it was lengthy and i felt there was too much lying and angst but not a good resolution. or maybe im just thinking that because i wouldn't have got back together with him

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how the author slowly unravelled the missing memories of the main character. I wish there had been a bit more of the angst, a bit more of how the characters fell in love the first time, before the amnesia. However, I would definitely recommend.

eh

At times I felt like something was off, the plot doesn’t lineup for little things like how long something takes.

Overall the general plot line is a fantastic refresher, don’t go in it for spice.
