My love for Kizuna AI and FUWAMOCO was what lead me to want to purchase an English edition copy of tankoubon 1 of holoX MEETing! While I didn't expect every hololive VTuber to appear, I'm glad this volume took its time to explore each member of the manga's titular guild, and its mix of feel-good moments and excellent artwork was enough to make reading the manga worth my time. Plus, the main character cast size is reasonable for a 2-tankoubon manga serial. Highly recommended for hololive otaku as well as those who never heard of hololive but are just itching to read a manga with cute-looking female characters and a simple plot to ease their worries. Now I await the announcement of the release of the English edition of the second and final tankoubon of holoX MEETing!, and hopefully, more hololive manga serials do set foot in North America in the coming years.

HoloX Meeting describes the origin story to the creation of Hololives 6th generation: HoloX. The story mainly focuses on Sakamata Chloe.

This story begins in 1964 Chloe gets drafted for the Vietnam War. The Vietnam war was not viewed favorably at this time and many Americans were protesting the war. Counter culture movements emerged from this; promoting civil rights, women’s rights, and the environment. President John Kennedy had recently been assassinated, leading to panic, especially after the recent Cuban Missile Crisis.

Chloe had recently turned 18 and was a broke college student, interested in marine biology, specifically the study of whales. This was due to the fact that Chloe was half whale and half Japanese. Having a Japanese mom and an orca dad, Chloe grew up with interesting life, being an incredible swimmer with strong breath control. Chloe can swim underwater for 15 minutes without breathing and dive as deep as 1,000 meters.

Choe was assigned to the HoloX fire team. This group included members La+ Darkness, the leader of the team, Takane Lui, the designated marksman, Hakui Koyori, the combat medic, Kazama Iroha, the automatic rifleman, and Sakamata Chloe, the newly added support.

Chloe began training at Westpoint, receiving education on hand-to-hand combat and survival skills necessary to the Vietnam War. Chloe was initially nervous but established a bond with the other team members. After completing training, the HoloX fire team was sent to Vietnam.

The team arrived in Vietnam at a military small base. They noticed how hot and humid the climate was. The ground was muddy and difficult to navigate. There was plenty of foliage to get lost in. This would make their mission severely difficult. Their mission being to destroy a Vietcong base camp. They would set out in several days. Chloe was assigned an M16A1, a newly designed assault rifle made to replace the M14. This gun was known to jam, which would concern many soldiers.

To pass the time, Chloe began to talk to the others and learn about them. La+ was a very bratty girl who wanted to expel communism from the world but disliked the idea of fighting in combat, of course, most soldiers disliked the fact that they were drafted. Iroha was a weapons expert, with experience in many different weapons. Lui was a big sister person, looking after La+ and Chloe. Koyori was a scholar and medic, and also enjoyed studying sukebei topics.

The training was intense in the heat and humidity of the forest. The phrase “THIS IS MY RIFLE! THERE ARE MANY OTHERS LIKE IT BUT THIS ONE IS MINE!” was engraved into their heads. They were bombarded by meaningless speeches about how they are fighting for a good cause and the importance of domino theory with the prevention of a communist government in Vietnam. Anti war sentiment at home was increasing.

Choe and the HoloX team were finally sent into battle for the first time. They carefully navigated the terrain while avoiding traps. They came across a few guerilla fighters, but successfully took care of them thanks to Lui’s marksmanship and La+’s knowledge on battle tactics. La+, Lui, and Koyori swapped their M16s for AKMs that they acquired from the loot left behind. Chloe was afraid of using a random gun was not up to American military standards and kept the M16.

After several days they finally arrived at their destination. The Vietcong base camp was in sight. After removing the surrounding enemy snipers, they carefully made their way inside. There was a lot more enemy soldiers then they were expecting, so they called for backup. HoloX furiously fought harder than they had ever fought before. More enemy soldiers were arriving, making thing more difficult, and HoloX’s backup had not arrived yet. While fighting, Iroha ended up getting shot. Chloe returned fire while Koyori provided medical assistance. Things got worse when Chole’s M16 jammed in the middle of a firefight. Chloe didn’t have time to clear it and switched to a M1911, which was not suited for their current situation. The team was running low on ammo and Iroha was not in condition to fight. They kept removing enemy soldiers but more enemy soldiers were arriving faster then they could remove them with their 7.62s (and Chloes 45 ACP). Chloe ended up running out of ammo for the 1911, and it looked like they were doomed.

All of a sudden, Fidel Castro appeared. Standing behind Castro was Joseph Stalin, who had been revived from the shadow realm with dark magic. Following their appearances were Ho Chi Mihn and Mao Zedong. They shot all 5 members of HoloX, leaving them unable to fight. The 5 girls laid on the ground, wondering if they were going to die in another country, for a useless war.
Suddenly, Richard Nixon appeared with JFK who had been revived. Dwight Eisenhower, Eugene Stoner, The Beatles, MLK, and Bob Dylan all came to their rescue. HoloX was saved! These powerful Americans used their American power to defeat the communists. They sent Stalin back to the afterlife and then sent all the other commies to the afterlife. The Beatles picked up the HoloX members and carried them away. MLK and Rose Parks healed their wounds with magic and then they all went back to America.
The story ends with JFK having to return to heaven, which made the HoloX members cry. JFK congratulated HoloX for helping America win the Vietnam war and end the Cold War. Kennedy told HoloX that the real journey was the friends that they made along to way, and flew up to Heaven. As Kennedy flew up to heaven, Chloe thought about everything that had happened, and was grateful for gaining some new friends, and well as becoming financially stable thanks to the GI Bill. HoloX decided that they would stay together for the rest of their lives, and become and idol group.

HoloX moved to Japan and bought a recording studio. They then began recording songs and eventually became a successful idol company. They have gained many new members and are still operating today.

Yes My Dark!!!

As a massive Hololive fan, I loved this, while it isn't as chaotic as something like Holographiti, it's still well written and takes the time to let you get to know all of the members of HoloX. As someone who watches these guys from time to time, mostly in clips, it was pretty faithful to the personalities that made us fall in love with them in the first place. If you like Hololive, pick this up, you won't be disappointed!

Not bad, but I wasn’t crazy about it either. I think it was just a bit too plain and unremarkable for me. But seeing the HoloX girls in a manga was cool, even though it’s a bit sad to see Chloe since she graduated.

Overall it’s a decent read, but you’d likely only get enjoyment from it if you were a Hololive fan.
