It was fun until the story took a turn towards espionage and hijinx. That's when I set it down to never be picked up again.

The Mysterious Benedict Society is a fiction book written by Trenton Lee Stewart with many different surprises to keep you on the edge of your seat while reading. I believe that this book would best be fit for young adults but it would be a fun read for anyone. This book has several main characters that really drive the story. Four of which are young gifted orphans brought together by a man by the name of Mr. Benedict. The main character who you follow throughout the whole story is Reynard or “Reynie”. He is an orphan that could possibly be considered a genius. Another character by the name of George Washington or “Sticky Washington” is also an orphan that is very intelligent but is quite fearful. Also there is a young girl named Kate, also an orphan, that is quite resourceful to say the least. She carries a bucket with various tools and supplies that help her tackle any challenge that is thrown at her. And lastly Constance Contraire who is too and orphan but is a little different from the other three. She is very intelligent but is extremely stubborn and sometimes quite annoying. As for Mr. Benedict, he is an older gentlemen that brings these four individuals together to complete a task for him and their own safety. He is also a genius himself however he is narcoleptic which means he falls asleep spontaneously. One of his partners goes by Number Two because she dislikes her real name Pencilla. She suffers from insomnia so she hardly ever sleeps. There is also a former student named Rhonda Kazembe that guides the four students through their quest. A man by the name of Milligan is a bodyguard for all of these people. The main antagonist of the book is Ledroptha Curtain who is also Mr. Benedict’s long lost twin.

There were ads put up all over the city in newspapers, billboards and magazines that says people are looking for gifted young children who desire to seek great opportunity. Reynard sees this ad and then goes on to take a series of tests to get to Mr. Benedict. Along the way he meets the three other orphans, Sticky, Constance and Kate. Mr. Benedict explains that they must complete a mission for their safety and that all four must accept the mission to go on.

While reading the book I found myself guessing what would happen next all the time. There were new challenges that the children had to overcome every day in the book. It always kept me on the edge of my seat. I found that I almost never got bored while reading because there was always something interesting going on.

Overall I found the book very entertaining. I would definitely recommend this to any high school student if they are up for a but of a longer read. The book comes in at 485 pages but is action packed! Also as a little extra bit of information I was interested to find a morse code message within the book that that exposes Mr. Benedict’s first name that it isn’t ever mentioned during the book. His full name is Mr. Nicholas Benedict.
