This is part of a guided reading packet and works perfectly for small groups! In class, we made -ish words since that is a common suffix throughout the book with fish. The book is perfect for emerging readers with easy to read words while also introducing some new sounds. The book is small in size and does not take up too much space so the table is not so crowded when working in groups. The words are in a very legible font with plenty of room for children to point while reading. The bear is trying to catch a fish to feed his family. Children can guess which picture represents the baby or parents based on size. I would definitely use this book for guided reading!
I would use this book in a guided reading lesson! This book is great for introducing new words and the illustrations help provide the children with a better understanding of the book. This book would be used for kindergarten only because it is very short. I love this book because it is short and sweet and to the point. In this book it could be used for a science lesson as well! I would use it in first grade to discuss predator versus prey! The bear is a predator and the fish are prey and you can explain who is who in the situation is and an introduction to predator and prey.
This is a good book to use in a guided reading lesson. I would introduce ing and how it changes the meaning of the word. For example, when you add ing to fish, fishing is a whole different word than fish. I would also use this book to practice comprehension skills by asking questions at the end.
After reading this book, I found this could be used mainly in guided reading. The book incorporates nature, family, and animals to help students understand ISH sounds, comprehension, and science.
