While reading this book, try putting yourself in a beginner's shoes; someone who is totally unfamiliar with literary theory and needs a real "introduction" to the field. You will see that this is not a good book. It starts fine; chapters cohere convincingly and the brevity is accompanied with clarity and succinctness.
As you approach the modern era, however, things start to get more complicated. In the part discussing Marxist criticism, explanation of Marxist literary theoristس precedes discussion of Marx's own theories. The chapter that introduces Freud does not directly define ego, superego and id. It is true that nowadays, almost everyone is familiar with these notions. However, to pick up an introduction means to be not familiar with the subject under discussion. But this book takes more than it should for granted.
