Okay so after book 2, the bar was on the floor. I had no expectations.
Which is probably why I enjoyed this one marginally more than the last. But ONLY marginally.
Everything is just so samey-samey.
I complained about this in book 2's review, so I'm not going to much here. Suffice to say this is the exact same story as the first 2 with different character names and a slightly different setting.
What bugged me more about this was the sheer amount of repetition going on within the story itself. There is no plot. None. Once the two reach Vayme's kingdom, Kaelle leaves his quarters like twice for all the months they're there. She meets nobody other than Vayme's brother and niece and a wolf she ends up bonding with. She does nothing, contributes nothing. For well over half the book it's food, bath, thinking about sex. Food, bath, talking about sex. Food, bath, sexy time. Over and over again.
And, of course, they have all the same conversations and same firsts as the other 2 couples. All 3 women experience sex with their men in the exact same way. Fingers first, then faces, then ice dildos, then full on consummation. There's always a bath scene or 3, always a bonus scene with them doing it in a public/semi-public place. The couples' dynamics are entirely alike. There's no preference differences, no dirty talking differences, nothing to distinguish Nissa/Kier from Laeli/Ravv from Kaelle/Vayme. Nothing.
So even the smut was boring by book 3.
Like books 1 and 2, the monster enemies don't get defeated. They just give up and go away. The "cult" isn't really a thing here, although it's mentioned a time or two, and Vayme does comment off-hand that he's spent "the last few days" wiping his city clean of cult followers (why he couldn't have done that earlier is anybody's guess). We see none of that action. Instead, we're in Kaelle's head while she's lounging around in bed. So much fun. 🙄😒
Credit where it's due, Kaelle is a slightly different character to Nissa and Laeli. She's much more timid (especially in the beginning) and doesn't really find her voice until much later in the story. She goes back to confront her family at the end of the book, so at least we get to see her step into her power and reclaim her confidence a little by the end. It's not a TON of character growth, but it's more than I've seen in the others. 🎉I'll take a win where I can get it.
She also wasn't nearly as annoying as Laeli. So there's that.
This book is also the shortest of the bunch, and was as easy to get through as books 1 and 2. So.
If you just wanna read smut and aren't picky about variety, pick this series up. If you actually like to have a little plot with your boring ass sex...maybe skip this one.
