Forbidden Mates #3

Dark & Deadly Predators

Rate this book
After eight years in a cave, I was finally rescued… by a terrifying fae king who tells me I'm his mate.

He's rough, growly, and refuses to answer any of my questions as he takes me back to the fae lands.

When we get there, I learn that a large faction of his people want him dead, so they paid in blood and magic for an ancient assassin to hunt him down.

Our mate bond should hide him from the monster, but if his people find out about it, we'll be executed.

And the bond itself?

It's a mental and physical connection that creates attraction between us—insanely strong attraction that we both struggle to resist.

We're fighting for our lives…yet somehow my mind keeps returning to the tie that binds our souls.

*This is a steamy enemies to lovers Rapunzel retelling with Beauty and the Beast and Hades and Persephone vibes. Each book in this fantasy romance trilogy follows a different couple with their own happily ever after, and the stories can be read in any order.

Okay so after book 2, the bar was on the floor. I had no expectations.

Which is probably why I enjoyed this one marginally more than the last. But ONLY marginally.

Everything is just so samey-samey.

I complained about this in book 2's review, so I'm not going to much here. Suffice to say this is the exact same story as the first 2 with different character names and a slightly different setting.

What bugged me more about this was the sheer amount of repetition going on within the story itself. There is no plot. None. Once the two reach Vayme's kingdom, Kaelle leaves his quarters like twice for all the months they're there. She meets nobody other than Vayme's brother and niece and a wolf she ends up bonding with. She does nothing, contributes nothing. For well over half the book it's food, bath, thinking about sex. Food, bath, talking about sex. Food, bath, sexy time. Over and over again.

And, of course, they have all the same conversations and same firsts as the other 2 couples. All 3 women experience sex with their men in the exact same way. Fingers first, then faces, then ice dildos, then full on consummation. There's always a bath scene or 3, always a bonus scene with them doing it in a public/semi-public place. The couples' dynamics are entirely alike. There's no preference differences, no dirty talking differences, nothing to distinguish Nissa/Kier from Laeli/Ravv from Kaelle/Vayme. Nothing.

So even the smut was boring by book 3.

Like books 1 and 2, the monster enemies don't get defeated. They just give up and go away. The "cult" isn't really a thing here, although it's mentioned a time or two, and Vayme does comment off-hand that he's spent "the last few days" wiping his city clean of cult followers (why he couldn't have done that earlier is anybody's guess). We see none of that action. Instead, we're in Kaelle's head while she's lounging around in bed. So much fun. 🙄😒

Credit where it's due, Kaelle is a slightly different character to Nissa and Laeli. She's much more timid (especially in the beginning) and doesn't really find her voice until much later in the story. She goes back to confront her family at the end of the book, so at least we get to see her step into her power and reclaim her confidence a little by the end. It's not a TON of character growth, but it's more than I've seen in the others. 🎉I'll take a win where I can get it.

She also wasn't nearly as annoying as Laeli. So there's that.

This book is also the shortest of the bunch, and was as easy to get through as books 1 and 2. So.

If you just wanna read smut and aren't picky about variety, pick this series up. If you actually like to have a little plot with your boring ass sex...maybe skip this one.

Part of the Forbidden Mates series just like the one before be prepared to finish this in one setting because once you start it you won’t put it down until the last page has been turned. Kaelle will break your heart, she hides herself away from everyone, her family thinking she is keeping them safe from the power from within herself and all it did was make her afraid of her own shadow living the way she did. Vayme sexy as all get out Fae King grumpy looking for that one with the magic that will save him, his people and finding her living alone in a cave realizing he has to take it a little easy on her. The embark upon a journey together and even though she is afraid she doesn’t run or shy away she faces it with his strength throw in some of the other fun charters and you will find yourself laughing with them and cheering then on but is it enough, will they be able to keep their hands off of each other being fated mates, will they defeat his adversary finding some type of peace, and can they find happiness somewhere along the wild ride they have embarked upon through the shenanigans?

This isn’t your sweet fairytale. Dark & Deadly Predators takes the Rapunzel story, sets it on fire, and adds a dose of enemies-to-lovers tension that hits hard and fast.

The main characters are sharp, stubborn, and constantly clashing—in the best way. Vayme is powerful, dangerous, and doesn’t pretend to be kind. Kaelle is done playing the naive, helpless prisoner. The dynamic gives major Beauty and the Beast meets Hades and Persephone energy, with a darker twist.

The romance is intense. Steamy. A little messy, but in a way that works for a story built on power struggles and trust issues. You’re not here for soft moments—you’re here for the tension, the heat, and the slow unraveling of walls.

It’s fast-paced, bold, and addictive. If you like dark fantasy romance with grit and heat, this delivers.

This was the best book in the series for me. I absolutely loved it and as always remember why I love Lola Glass. I can not wait to reread this one again. I loved the King dark side and with Kaelle trying to realize her strength it was a fantastic story. I honestly was not sure how I felt about the first two books. The first book was not my favorite but as I read through the books I loved book 2 and 3 even more and now feel the need to reread again. Highly recommend for a sweet steamy HEA book!

I absolutely loved this book! Dark and Deadly Predators concludes the Forbidden Mates series. As with the others, it is mainly the story of a supposedly selfish fae king that uses a human to hide his magic to avoid an assassin until the eclipse. What Glass has done however, is take that basic plotline and write 3 distinct books that are very different. It was not the same story line rehashed with other characters.

This is the story of Kaelle, the last of the 3 human magic-wielding humans to be unwillingly mated to Vayme, the fae king. She is the storm-wielding human who can read auras, something it was thought that only demons could do and something that overwhelms her in crowded areas. She was locked in a cave as a child when her magic revealed itself and then basically starved by her parents. They manipulated her into thinking it was for the safety of herself and her people. Unaware of the truth, she initially doesn’t realize that Vayme rescued her. Something she becomes aware of throughout the course of the story.

Despite the outwardly almost vicious exterior Vayme portrays to the outside world, he becomes kind and protective of Kaelle and quickly realizes how difficult the situation is for her as well. The mating is revealed to his city as well but, it is not a true sealed soul bond. Something that couples are still murdered for in this book as well as the others. It does surprise me that Strong, his bonded beast can communicate with her almost immediately but also appears to be able to block one or other off at will and speak to them separately.

While the beginning of the book takes place with the other two fae kings and their humans, it is a very short section. The majority of the story takes place in the caves of Vuuth, the kingdom of Vayme. I felt it delved more into the changes in both of the main characters, as well as the growth and strengthening of their relationship. The monster-assassin is almost an afterthought. There is some interconnectedness with main characters from the other books and for full enjoyment, I recommend that you read those as well. Other characters are introduced in this book, but not in an overly obtrusive way and I hope that they get their own stories.

While Glass states that the books can be read in any order, I think you should start from the beginning. That might just be my own neurotic tendencies showing through, but I am absolutely sure when I go back and reread these books (and I know I will!), that is how I will do it. Kudos to Glass for a great storyline. The ending of the trilogy could not have ended on a better note.

Vayme & Kaelle's Bond

This is a great third book in the Forbidden Mates series. Kaelle has lived, alone, in a small cave near her village for 8 years (since she was 13) due to the wind and storms she creates. Vayme rescues her as he needs her magic to hid his from the assassin after him. He takes her back to the Fae lands and Jirev, where she meets the other magic blessed humans and the "games" start. After the Beast attacks, Kaelle's winds get them all out but Vayme takes her to his town of Vuuth in the caves to protect her until the Eclipse when their bond will fade and the Monster won't be after him anymore; though he keeps reminding her to say the words to seal the bond if she's taken from him (to protect her). The longer they are together the more their relationship develops with them both wanting more but unsure how to speak of it.

This story is full of trauma and growth, drama, romance, feelings and learning to be strong in yourself; with fantastic characters. Mainly told from Kaelle's perspective but it was nice to read Vayme's POV as well. I know this is the end of this set but I look forward to reading the assassin's stories (and hope they involve the 3 elf ex-queens).

Another fantastic Lola Glass story, full of deep emotion, brilliant characters with great chemistry between them, humor and spice. The animal xuno companions, Strong and Soft are great with their own story, and Pavia is a spunky little girl.

4 stars but in a quiet kinda understated way. I love that there was no drama and I think Kaelle had the most growth in the series. The relationship was easy and I enjoyed the book immensely. I love that Strong and Swift mated. I actually really like how throughout the series the main couple and there companions were each mated to the other. It was sweet and made it seem like they were more obviously meant to be together. Kaelle and Swift were my favorite bonded pair. I love how they developed a friendship that was genuine. I also liked how each book technically could be a standalone but it just made so much more sense to read them in the order written and I think we learned more about the world and how they became bonded with each book. I’m a little sad I read the wolf book first bc I think having this background of Evare would’ve made that book more enjoyable. I love Lola glass tho, specifically that this series had more plot and was a bit more serious while still being easy. I’m very happy she confirmed at the end that the assassins will eventually be getting their own books and I have a feeling the 3 elf queens are gonna be their mates. Something to look forward to. Speaking of the assassins, I like how they just waited this one out (by force of the queens) but it added to the plot of her being taken. And I like how the cultists were more on a back burner and this book felt like it focused more on the couple. Might be my favorite of the series even tho the first one was more exciting and the second one the couple I think bantered and flowed easier.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is a steamy enemies to lovers Rapunzel retelling with Beauty and the Beast and Hades and Persephone vibes. Each book in this fantasy romance trilogy follows a different couple with their own happily ever after, and the stories can be read in any order. This is the third and final standalone book in the Forbidden Mates series. This story features a girl named Kaelle and the Fae King named Vayme. After eight years in a cave, she was finally rescued by a terrifying fae king who tells her she’s his mate. He's rough, growly, and refuses to answer any of her questions as he takes her back to the fae lands. When they get there, she learns that a large faction of his people want him dead, so they paid in blood and magic for an ancient assassin to hunt him down. Their mate bond should hide him from the monster, but if his people find out about it, they’ll be executed. The bond itself, is a mental and physical connection that creates attraction between them, insanely strong attraction that they both struggle to resist. They’re fighting for their lives, yet somehow her mind keeps returning to the tie that binds their souls. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. I can’t wait to read the next series that takes place in the same world called Claimed By The Wolves. I highly recommend to everyone.

Kaelle has spent years in a spartan cave above her people's village. At the age of eight, when she came into her wind powers with no understanding or control, she was banished. Surviving with only a weekly visit from her parents with small amounts of food which was barely enough to keep her alive.

Vayme has been sent by the elves to find and temporarily mate with a human with magic that will shield his. A dissident group of his people have set a magical assassin after him and this female is his only chance. What he did not expect was a beautiful, skin and bone woman that is afraid of her own shadow.

The relationship between these two is tangled to say the least. Whilst the temporary mate bond gives them the ability to mind speak they still manage to hide so much of how they feel. Both have trauma in their past that makes them wary of trusting another.

This story has plenty of adventure as they fight to avoid the assassin and the dissidents. Despite the struggle the intense connection simmers away until they give in to the inevitable.

Lola always writes wonderful stories and this is the second book in a fantastic series.

Dark & Deadly Predators is the third book in the Forbidden Mates series by Lola Glass. This is a slow-burn romantasy with Fae, magic, paranormal elements, chemistry, steam, drama, captive/kidnapping, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, fated mates, high stakes, darker themes, and has a bit of a Rapunzel retelling vibe.
‘After eight years in a cave, I was finally rescued… by a terrifying fae king who tells me I'm his mate.
He's rough, growly, and refuses to answer any of my questions as he takes me back to the fae lands.
When we get there, I learn that a large faction of his people want him dead, so they paid in blood and magic for an ancient assassin to hunt him down.
Our mate bond should hide him from the monster, but if his people find out about it, we'll be executed.’
This is Vayme & Kaelle’s story. Each book in the series follows different MCs- but all set in the same ‘world’.
The Series Contains:
-Dark & Beastly Fae – Kierdan & Nissa’s Story (Book #1)
-Dark & Dreadful Brutes – Ravv and Laeli’s Story (Book #2)
-Dark & Deadly Predators – Vayme & Kaelle’s Story (Book #3)
I enjoyed this book/series and look forward to reading more from Ms. Glass in the near future.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Lola Glass!

I've enjoyed the interconnected standalone books within this series and this book was no different. However, I find that I enjoyed the first two standalone books in this series a little more than I enjoyed this one. This book gives us Vayme and Kaelle (Tempest) story and it was just as steamy as the previous book but when it came to things happening within the story, I feel as if there wasn't as much action in this book and this story seemed to move at a slower pace. I enjoyed Vayme but Tempest was scared of everything, and it became a bit repetitive at times. There was a little suspense but not much else really going on. I enjoyed Vayme's niece Pavia in this story as she brought joy and laughs and it was not only getting Vayme and Kaelle's HEA, but also getting to read about Pavia's too. This story ended up being a good read and even though it wasn't a 5-star read for me, I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books from this author.

What a wonderful surprise for me after reading this author’s work for the first time! Readers will be swept away by the world building, extraordinary MC’s , unusual people and creatures like “xunos” which can talk and bond with people ( whom they select ). The people in this novel are humans, elves, fae and gargoyles. The “xunos” reminded me of the “demons” who were bonded to and manifestations of their humans in “Golden Compass”.
This author has you immersed and engrossed in this fated mates romance in the first few pages. The action that takes place is due to wars within and between kingdoms and assassins engaged to kill fated mates. There are many accolades that I could shower on Glass, but simply put, read this powerful, passionate fantasy romance between Kaelle and Vayme. Be sure to include the bonus epilogue. This is an utterly fantastic novel and worth more than 5 stars ⭐️.

I have so much Love for this book and author

I don't know where to start.
This story is absolutely perfect. The characters and the plot every single part makes you feel, sucks you in and just pulls you along as if you are truly in it.
Then you get through this stunning work of art and discover that it was written by a strong incredible woman going through what no person alive ever should. A pain no person should know, yet she made this story reach out and make you feel beautiful fantastical feelings.
I can't say enough about her and this series. I'm beyond awed by her, her talent and strength.
Please read this.

I read it all through the night disregarding sleep to remain a part of this world and was able to leave it satisfied and eager to find more by Lola to read.

8 / 10 ⭐️

There is just something about Lola Glass' writing that captivates you. It has a forgotten fairytale quality to it that is woven into the book. The world building has been gradual but it doesn't overtake so much as enhance. Each time I decide that the last lot of characters were my favourite but I have to admit that I have become rather fickle and just love them all, this series especially. While many of the characters have fatal flaws, wounds from their pasts or are even still fighting to cope with current hurts they still manage to try and find a way forward and their struggles are not glossed over or magically made right. They are so much more real and tangible for all that. Simply a wonderful, wonderful book.

Not One of My Favorites

I've read a bunch of books out of a few different series from Lola Glass, and usually really love the goofy banter, imaginative world, adorible (and spicy) relationships, and interesting cultures she cooks up. This one fell a little short for me, mostly because I had trouble understanding Kaelle as character. I felt like her back story was a little too unbelievable, and her magic powers never really found their "resolve" throughout the story. Overall I loved the relationship she built between Kaelle and Vayme, but felt like Kaelle needed a little more flushing out. I plan to continue reading other books by Lola Glass, as I love a lot of her other series, but this one wasn't it for me.

So this had all the elements that i wanted from a grumpy alpha and magic to lots of sex, however something was missing. I think that the switch from grumpy to sweet was too abrupt and without prompting. It didn't feel very natural. Additionally, the whole story line about the beasts was unnecessary not really resolved... This was the same in the other books as i'm sure there could have been better reasons to pair the two up. I found myself wanting more conflict with the beasts in all 3 of the books and some resolution as to at least who set them up or how to break their curses. It felt like with the 3 elven queens theres a set up for another series, but i honestly was not invested in these side characters at all.

Read the author’s note!!!

I truly loved all three books in this series. They all tied together, and yet each had their own unique storyline. While it would be really hard to pick a favorite, I think the last one may be mine. The female main character is vulnerable, but has a lot of spunk. The male has a bit more humanity than Kier, but not by much. The entire series are so very well written, and an excellent escape into a world of wonder, intrigue, and romance.

My heart broke reading the author’s note at the end. Normally, I don’t bother, but fate determined it to be important. It was, and makes me appreciate this author so much more for overcoming a heartbreaking loss. Lola Glass is a top notch writer. One I will be reading more, until there is no more. Veil forbid!

Dark & Deadly Predators is book three of the Forbidden Mates series, and an exciting addition.
MFC Kaelle has kept herself hidden within a cave believing that was where she belonged in a bid to keep her village and family safe from the power that flows through her.
It won’t keep her safe from MMC Fae King Vayme though because he needs her magic!
I enjoyed this Fantasy bonanza of enemies-to-lovers, fated mates, angst, adventure and steamy will they or won’t they romance. Love this author’s engaging writing which never fails to deliver a wonderful read.

This was a long time comming story and I loved every second of it. It gets better the longer you read and the more you get sucked into the story and get to know the characters. Kaelle and Vayme build such a beautifull connection and learn to overcome their own struggles and demons along the way to make that possible. It's one of the characteristics of Lola's books I love, she always finds a way to transfer everyday struggles into imaginary worlds and show you ways how to deal with them. I also hope there will be more stories about the assassins, after what has been done to them, they deserve a happy end themselves.

Another captivating fantasy romance!

Lola Glass is a master storyteller, weaving together fantastic stories from the unlikeliest of beginnings. Alpha fae angry at having to depend on a human (or anyone else) for any reason and a human woman who has been kept isolated, fearful of herself, and starving, thrown together in a stroke of fate - or perhaps elven design? - and what do you get? A captivating fantasy romance that is a mixture of embracing our true selves and opening up to... well you will have to read for yourself ;). The book is both steamy and sensitive. You'll have a hard time putting it down!

4 stars! I loved Vayme and Kaelle so much. Two soft spoken, slightly broken characters who find safety in each other’s arms. This was my fav of the series. The plot was just enough, the spice was perfect, and their relationship felt genuine and natural. There were many scenes of them just talking and getting to know each other, which is often missing in these types of books. Vayme was seriously the yummiest cinnamon roll ever. And Kaelle was super likable, easy to root for, and sweet but grew into her strength. Lived the wolf companions and little niece Pav. A good read with a great love story that I’d recommend!

This is a well written and enjoyable tale.
It is the conclusion of the series and follows Kaelle and Vayme and how they navigate the curse and each other.
I like Kaelle as she tried to face things head-on. She didn’t shy away, even when it cause her pain. Vayme was honourable and didn’t just look out for his people but also Kaelle. The scenes were lush and vibrant and they made a great couple with some great banter.
The story flew by and I was sad to finish the book as I wanted it to keep going as it was so enjoyable.
This is a great book and is most definitely worth reading.

I think Kaelle and Vayme were an interesting pair. She grew into herself a lot over the course of the book and I liked the way he supported her in that. In some ways she was the most fragile of the women and it seemed like Vayme respected her need for space and distance, at least initially. I think I was expecting a bit more from the plot since the other two books had an additional plot like along side the assassins portion. There was one here too but it felt much less impactful. It was a good read overall

I did like this book, it was not as strong as the first two, but it still perservered. It was definitely the tie up book on all the things. I like how the series overlaps each other, and they all meet up, and that is reflected in each book. So you know these are happening concurrently. The assassin's thing was not closed up well though, I would guess we are going to see another series based on the three of them.

I want to start by saying that i love Lola's work and always read anything she writes. This one was a slow starter for me, but i stuck with it and am so glad i did! The story picks up and runs with it and the ending is so perfect. The companions are a great character addition and ive got to say- Soft is my favourite. So yeah, another winner from lola.
