The Curse

Good background, summary and text. Based on Victor Hugo‘s banned play, Verdi's opera also had to be adapted to pass Austrian censors about 50 years after Hugo. Interestingly, it was created at the moment when Verdi begins an engagement with deeper, more psychologically complex issues. A great introduction...I read these as preparation for live performances - Rigoletto has a wonderful score and these study guides help both with understanding and appreciation for the art. Can highly recommend.
