Undecided between 4 and 5 stars so 4.5 for now. :D
I really, really enjoyed this. I've only recently discovered the Sugar Creek Gang series and have only read one before now - I would have liked to read the series in order but I happened to find a couple physical copies so I had to go with what I had on hand :D And I enjoyed the first one I read a lot (Secret Hideout), but this one I loved even more. These are really good character-driven thoughtful yet adventurous books with strong Christian themes, primarily for boys but easily able to be enjoyed by all ages and girls too. Each character came alive for me and I could barely put it down as the book went on. I definitely want to read all the others, and when I do, I may come back and give a more thorough review. So glad I stumbled across this series!

Picked this book up somewhere thinking it would be fun to read. It was OK. Nothing outstanding.

This is the first Sugar Creek Gang book I've read, and I think it'll be a great book series for T. It's the adventures of a group of pre-teen boys growing up and it seems they are all or mostly mysteries. It is a distinctly Christian book series, as the narrator (6th grade boy) talks about the lessons he learns in Sunday School and from his parents, and about how God's teachings in the Bible impact his life and attitudes, and includes his own prayers and those of others. It's not 'preachy' though; being a Christian is just part of his everyday life. This is an imperfect kid who sometimes has a short-temper, or sometimes makes wrong assumptions, etc., but strives to live out his life according to God's plan. This book's themes were about how God teaches us that all people are created equal, regardless of skin color (the book takes place in the 60s, so there was a good history lesson here too, about segregation), not to judge others by appearances, and also a sub-theme of living with your heart in the right place and doing the right thing, even if you don't get all the glory and credit.
