Books enable us to travel places that we can only dream of; we can walk on the moon, or sink to the deepest depths of the ocean. However, not all books have to be spectacular to be great; simple pleasures can also be good. Taking a child to a petting zoo is one of the most fun outings a family can do, but what happens when you are having an indoor day? Pick up ‘‘Fluffy Chick’’ and bring the simple joy of the petting zoo to you.

Fluffy Chicken wants to introduce you to some of his friends; pig for instance, or cow. All of them are adorned with a feature that is fun to touch from a soft belly to textured ears. In the end though, all we want to do is rub Fluffy Chick’s little belly, but where have they gone? Follow the nice surprise to see how small Fluffy really is.

When it comes to children’s books, Rod Campbell is a name to conjure with. His simple, but fantastic books have been entertaining us for 40 years. ‘‘Dear Zoo’’ may be his most famous work, but nearly all his books follow the same pattern that makes them great for babies in particular and ‘‘Fluffy Chick’’ is no exception.

With only ten pages, this is not a book that goes into great depth about life on the farm. Instead, it is just a pleasurable touch and feel book that covers a few of the classic farmyard animals that a child will learn early on in their life. Campbell’s trademark bold and colourful illustrations are front and centre, so the book is very appealing to a toddler. They will soon reach forwards to get a feel of the different animals. The text is also simple enough that very early readers can follow it.

One element that is really fun about ‘‘Fluffy’’ is the final page that gives the reader a surprise. It is this page that lifts the book from being just another touch and feel cliché into something that is great entertainment for a little child. Just watch as they try and race towards the end to reveal the surprise once more. Original review on thebookbag.co.uk

My 2 boys loved this as a first baby book. Read it to them from 1month old - I loved it too! Very cute and not too many things on each page for them to take in. They asked for it to be read over and over again. Buying a new addition for my god-daughter now. :-)

Bought this one for my niece a six month old creature. I couldn't help to stroke fluffy chick first and read about her rolled-away egg!
