This may be a christian love story but I have to repeat this: Familial insularity is destructive.
And the entitled attitude of the spoiled five year old is just one of many examples. However Maryann's hangups about her own family and what defines true success aren't any better.
Yeah, yeah, change is hard and I know you can't force relationships and all that jazz, but you can't order an adult not to date either, you can't control someone else's love life either even if they're a parent.
BTW new flash, there's no escape from change either. Change is the only constant in life. No matter how much we try to resist it, change is inevitable.
Clayton's naive and a bit of a doormat tbh (lots more self-restraint than me), so Amy's bratty controlling of her mother and overall snobbiness is uncalled for.
Another thing keeping the spoiled brat away from the ugly truth: That her doting father was a two-timing slimeball that knocked up another?
Big mistake. One can't hide these kind of facts forever.

Easygoing Minnesota farmer Clayton (Clay) Matthews has been in love with his high school friend, Maryann McGregor, for years. However, she’s abandoned their small town for the bright lights of the big city and marriage to a lawyer, Terrence. However, scandalous circumstances force her to return to her small town roots.
The love of money is the theme of this book, as Clay feels he can’t compete with Maryann’s desire for bigger and better things and, to be honest, she does come across as a typical gold digger in the beginning of the book. She rationalizes this because she was raised poor and wants her spoiled daughter, Amy, to have what she didn’t. Maryann’s late husband, however, found true love with another woman and she is now claiming that he fathered a child by her and wants a share of his estate. This places Maryann in a predicament: she has a letter that indicates that his wish is for the women to split the estate, but Maryann wants to keep all of it for herself. This would be legal, because only she knows of the existence of the letter, but is this truly just?
Caitlin and Jordan, friends of Maryann’s provide some nice comic relief and show realistically what marriage is like for most people: compromise and conflict. However, a wasted subplot has Clay’s absent father returning for no reason other than to provide a deus ex machina for the author to hang her “the love of money is the root of all evil” lesson on; it really doesn’t work, and Clay’s character changes so much by the end of the book, the reader is wondering if twins are involved. His attitude simply doesn’t make sense in light of what we already know about him.
It’s not the best book in the series, but it’s a nice, easy read.

Five year old Amy's father died and she does not want anyone else joining their family. Clay is patient and wins her heart as well as her mother's. A Christmas Eve wedding makes the three of them a new family.
