Jason Dalgliesh was born on the south coast of England and grew up in Hampshire, UK. He has worked in the power transmission industry, the retail sector, call centres and as a night-owl in a bakery. His greatest challenge of all is ongoing, as a stay at home parent.

He is presently writing the Dark Yorkshire crime-series, featuring DI Nathaniel Caslin.

The novels are set in Yorkshire, England. The medieval City of York is Caslin's home town and the plot lines take in some of the UK's most rugged and beautiful landscapes, from the windswept North Sea coastline and across the stunning North York Moors.

Penned in the style of the Crime Noir genre, Caslin is a deep character, as flawed as he is brilliant, battling his own demons as much as those he is pitted against. Readers who enjoy gritty, atmospheric thrillers will find the series a must read.

Having spent time abroad, Jason has lived and worked in various parts of England as well as the Scottish Highlands. He currently resides in the East Riding, with his wife and two young children.

A good set of books

I enjoyed this set of books and thought the plots were good. However there are also a lot of niggling irritating things. Characters over analysing each other, peculiar descriptions of facial expressions, a character not hearing someone someone come into the room and dropping their food/drink being used repeatedly. Tamara is an annoying character - being nosy, looking intently at Jassen all the time, attempting a romantic angle when she know he's in a relationship and she is too. The series has potential but these niggles need editing out.

Terrific writing

A new author for me, I found the first book a little stodgy to start. But the quality of writing and absolute care of editing had me continuing to read until I got swept up into the story. I usually get annoyed by spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, but I couldn’t find any! What a breath of fresh air that is. I’m looking forward to reading more of this author and was honestly sorry to get to the end of this trio of stories. I love the fact that there are actually clues if you’re willing to engage in the plot. Characters are believable, human with quirks and private lives which are there, but don’t deter from the story, merely adding to the depth of the tale. Highly recommended reading.

DNF.
After persevering through about a third of the first book, I skimmed to the end. No surprise as to whodunnit.
These stories and characters fall short of being engrossing crime fiction; and are rendered deeply frustrating by repeated grammatical errors, especially sentences in which the object and subject don't match.
A skilful editor could work wonders with this material. It has potential.

The scenery is a major character in these mysteries, evocatively portrayed by author J M Dalgliesh. Bleak, windswept, and hiding death and mystery, it forms a haunting backdrop to careful investigating, complex relationships, and natural characters. The mysteries are a slow-burn, but the reader is quickly drawn in, with plot twists, twisted people, and nice development of character from one story to the next. I would enjoy reading more.

Disclosure: I got them on a deal in my “British mystery” phase.

Twists and Turns!

An intriguing murder mystery with Tom Janssen and Tamara Greave chasing up leads and suspects one after another until finally all the pieces come together. Young detective Eric Collet continues to grow as an investigator. The personal lives and back issues of all three main characters are developed as well.
A little heavy on the local landscape every time any of the three drive from the station. Sometimes the descriptions are useful and add to the story but other times rather annoyingly superfluous.

A tough trilogy to get through

I really struggled with this trilogy.
The storylines are muddled and confusing, parts of the stories are left unanswered, and the "suspense and twists" that end each one are so far removed from the original plot, it leaves you wondering wtf just happened.
I have read a lot of Dalgliesh's books now and this first set of Norfolk books have left me massively underwhelmed.

Thèse are the most enjoyable books I’ve read in a long time.

The writer captures all of the nuances of human nature. What a wonderful Penner! His characters are engaging and complex. Early in the series, one is drawn into the plot. You know the characters well and feel as if they are actually in your own life. I’ve ordered the next three books in the series. I can’t wait to see what happens in the continuing saga.

Great Series!

J M Dalgliesh is a favorite author of mine. He writes books that keep you up all night reading. In the first three books, we get to know the detectives. They are good, hardworking people. The stories will keep you guessing from the start. There is no “bad” language to distract you. I promise you will love these books as much as I do! Beth P.

I have reviewed the first two books separately. The third one was equally good. I am glad there are many more in the series and plan to read all of them. Book Three was an exciting tale with typically many possible perpetrators and a dastardly plot. As usual, I was surprised and gratified at the ending. An excellent set of reads!

A good read could do with a bit more grit.

I enjoyed revisiting Norfolk and the places I'd been to whilst holidaying there; it added another dimension to the storyline, knowing the places.
I liked the main character but felt another book was needed to see how his life settled into the job after seemingly unravelling.
Storyline intriguing but could do with a bit more grit.

Wonderful read.

I really liked this trio and also the free one that I read first which prompted me to want to know more about these characters.
I'm sure I will be looking for more books by Dalgliesh. I will admit some of the British words were lost on me. That is why I enjoy Kindle. The definitions are right at your fingertips.

Good characterisation, plots and vivid rural locations. I feel this is perfect material for an ITV Mini-Series although it might not be a contemporary enough backdrop but the material is good and certainly adapted well would make for excellent TV Detective drama.

Entertaining books

The character development was well done and progressed quickly. Story progressed logically and smoothly. Overall story was interesting and entertaining on an adult level. Strongly recommended.

Another great story with a great sense of place

The characters are well thought through and deliver their lines and roles well, the story and back stories fascinating and not overbearing, and all on the well projected stage of Norfolk which Dalgleish brings alive!

Cringeworthy cliche ridden characters, utterly unbelievable, and stilted unwieldy conversations which just did not flow. Some of the language the characters used was laughable - especially the younger ones. Sadly didn’t even make it to the end of book 1 because it annoyed me so much.

The stories kept getting better, and the last was best.

These stories have very believable characters, exciting plots with lots of twists, excellent descriptions of people and scenery. Look forward to more Tom Janssen books

great characters

I enjoyed Tom and Tamera, both with problems in their social lives but putting all that aside to solve the cases. Poor Eric does seem to get worked to death though but he aims to please to his own detriment

Great set of books

Evocative of the Norfolk landscape, well up there with Elly Griffiths at her best.
Good characters, and plenty of twists and turns in the plots.

Absolutely enjoyed all these stories. The team are all coming together with their personalities and skills shown. It’s nice to see their own stories not just the job.

The last book in this set was Kill your Sins and I found it a really good read, I found I just kept reading not wanting to put it down sot only too a couple of evenings to finish it. It took a while to realize who the killer was and I was kept guessing till the end. if another box set come out I may well get it

I enjoyed this series although it’s annoying that you can’t add them separately to goodreads as I have to then review all 3. All three were various stars. I wouldn’t rate anymore than 3.5 for any of them. I did find Tom’s entire love story pointless. There’s some weird dialogue that happens as well.
