5 Stars. Not really a continuation of Chris Steinbrunner and Otto Penzler's "Encyclopedia of Mystery and Detection" previously reviewed, but close. Murphy's work is an examination of the same subject but with a different accent. Some of the more obscure authors of the mystery genre have been shunted aside to make room for interesting reviews of hundreds of leading titles since the 18th century. Plus developments between 1976 and 2001's 2nd edition. Murphy (2nd) is 100 pages longer than Steinbrun ...more
