Beyond the Edge: Spiritual Transitions For Adventurous Souls

Jesus calls his disciples to follow him, but where does he lead us? Responding to Jesus' summons, we find ourselves leaving familiar certainties and securities behind as we step out boldly in faith. Old boundaries dissolve as we are led into liminal spaces - exhilarating situations, new places of discovery and radical spiritual growth. In such experiences Christ reveals himself to us anew. The place of risk is the threshold of the divine. Beyond the Edge is for people who wish to go deeply into the spiritual life, for spiritual directors, and for those who walk with others on their prayer journey. It can be used individually or in groups.

You will never be the same again if you read this. His insights and contemplative exercises are like nothing I've come across before and are like drinking cold water on a hot day. Wonderful

Mayes has worked both as parish priest and advisor for spirituality in the Diocese of Chichester (UK). From his studies in spirituality, and his years of living in Jerusalem, he offers this book. The book takes various journeys in the life of Jesus Christ and looks at the context of them. Mayes then seeks to apply them to our spiritual lives, with suggested prayer exercises at the end each chapter. It draws on the Desert Fathers and Mothers, the Benedictine, Carmelite and Ignatian traditions. An appendix of spiritual direction paradigms concludes the volume. Scenes include: Jesus' baptism, the woman at the well in Samaria, the man born blind approaching the pool of Siloam, Jesus' own experience of the Passover. You will find some help in this book: if you are are interested in the land Jesus lived in, if you have been, or plan to go, to Israeli or Palestinian territories, if you are engaged in Christian faith formation, if you are engaged in spiritual direction.

Fantastic, this book does something to you. Half way into the first chapter I knew this was going to be different. Then the author opened up the Gospels dramatically, I was there back 2000 years ago understanding more about the radical way Jesus taught. Bringing a lot of cultural context you see how radical Jesus was. I have learnt things about Nazareth and Galilee, how much Jesus travelled and how much he lead his disciples to the edge. Fantastic read, glued to it.... highly recommend
