ASPCA Complete Dog Training Manual. Bruce Fogle, DVM. Training Sequences by Patricia Holden White. Foreword by Roger Caras, President, ASPCA. New York: Dorling Kindersley, 1994. Hardback. 127 pages.
I really, really liked this book. The reason that I got it is that we have a new dog that is trying to adopt us. He is an Australian shepherd who is very high energy and who already has an owner but the dog escaped from his pen. He decided he wants to spend the day with us and go back to his owner at night. The dog has been getting into a lot of trouble and so I wanted to attempt to train him and that's why I got the book.
The book has some really wonderful pictures and I really like the way it is written. I have been training the new dog to walk on a leash. Also, I already have a couple of dogs who will come when called but won't do much else. The dog training manual gives instructions on teaching basic commands such as come, sit, down, walking without a lead, walking with a lead. I am working on training the dogs to do this. It is hard but I am encouraged.
I am not sure this is going to be enough to keep the new dog out of trouble. A neighbor is complaining that he believes the dog is bothering his chidren when they wait for the bus in the morning. I think the only way to fix that would be to make a pen for the dog which is more than what we plan to do right now. So I am not sure the book has completely solved our problems.
However I do think that it helps because I have been walking the dog on a lead and at least that prevents him from chasing cars when he is with me. Also I want to work on getting my other dogs to learn the basic commands.

What can I say, I want a new dog. Very informative and a lot of the information is similar to what I tell clients in the exam room when they bring in a new puppy. Easy read, but not a lot of in depth information.
