An Isla Sagrario Story

In the 1700s on the island of Sagrario, men who love other men find safe haven. For Francis Holland, an escaped indentured servant, Sagrario offers nothing but loneliness. His life begins to change when he finds Wick, a merman, washed ashore.

After escaping from an abusive plantation owner, Francis Holland is now living an idyllic existence on Isla Sagrario, a place where men are free to love each other and women are safe from physical harm.

Not only is Francis scarred physically and emotionally from numerous injuries he received while he was an indentured servant, he is also desperately lonely. He comes upon an injured merman while sifting through salvage at the shoreline.

This is such a beautiful little story. It's well crafted and pulls at your heartstrings and I really could have read a whole lot more about sweet Francis and his merman Wick. Well worth a read.

Fairy Tale – noun:

Narrative centered on magical tests, quests and transformations
A type of short story that typically features European folkloric fantasy characters and usually magic or enchantments.

Love Rising was not at all what I expected and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised to read a true fairytale about loneliness, love and a little magic.

Love Rising is the story of Francis, an escaped indentured slave who toils away on Isla Sagrario. He doesn’t really live, he just gets by, survi
This is a short and beautiful fairy tale … and oh, how I love my fairy tales.

I always have a soft heart for characters who radiate loneliness but still keep their head high. Like Francis here … who came to the island of Sagrario after escaping his life as an abused servant. Nobody paid attention to him – he felt like he was barely there, present but unnoticable and he longed for someone to call his own. I wanted to hug Francis. He broke my heart *oh, all right, imagine me hugging Francis tight*.
Merman loving?

Hell yeah!

A really sweet story with a wonderful character of Francis. Wick is not as well developed but for such a short story Francis makes a truly remarkable hero. I pretty enjoyed this story.
Ah, a good old fairy tale. You really can't go wrong.

Francis was living a lonely life. He desperately wanted someone he can share his life with. Well, he's in luck; on his latest venture to the shore to pick up some washed up scraps, he found more than he was looking for. Amongst everything else on the shore, he saw an interesting creature, one that was half man and half fish. What else is there to do but take him home with him?

The merman woke up to find himself in a strange place and instantly

This was an unexpected sweet shortie! My first story that involved a merman and it pulled at my emotions and made me happy. Give me more of stories like this!

A beautiful and yet melancholy fairy tale of a lonely man finding love in the form of a merman. Francis and Wick were sweet and that end was lovely.
Chris, the Dalek King
After escaping from a life of indenturement and cruelty, Francis Holland has finally found a home amongst the odd assortment of men and women of Sagrario. There on the island he is free from his tyrannical master, free from a life spent in pain, and free to openly show his desire for a male lover. Except, even when he is free to do so, there really is no one to offer that love. Sure, there are midnight trysts, men he can touch for a fleeting moment before they tire of him and go seek another–-bu ...more

This short novelette is set in the 1700's on Isla Sagrario, a small Caribbean island where homosexual men live openly.

Francis is man of unknown age, though I guessed it to be mid-late 20's. He was sold as an indentured servant, as an escape from his family's poverty, but his master was a brutal man and a sexual sadist who enjoyed brutalizing Francis. Francis did escape to Sagrario where he is not in danger, but he is

Francis Holland got lucky once; and it was the only time in his life that anything had ever really gone his way. Somehow, he ended up living on the Isla Sagrario, one of the few places in early 1700 that a gay man could live openly. This was a very good thing for a man who had never been skilled at keeping secrets.

He's settled into his small cabin near the ocean, works hard cooking at local inn, has a few friends (an even fewer number of casual lovers), and knows that he should be satisfied with

Though short, this sweet tale packs an emotional punch that anyone (human or mer) can relate to. The author's voice is perfectly fairy tale and just right for this story about a lonely man who's suffered and is still seeking his one and only.

Francis is so lonely--and even in the few words of description, the reader can't help but feel compassion and empathy for his plight. We root for him immediately--and we want him to fins someone special. Not just anyone, either. Enter Wick--the me

A very sweet and straightforward short story told in a true fairy tale style. Somehow, knowing how it would end up early on didn't take away from the enjoyment. Of course I wish it was a little longer, since I liked the characters and wanted to know more about them and see more of them, but it is a complete story. An uncomplicated and magical feel-good read. ...more

was a whole lot more sex! Sweet, too; I ached with Francis as he pined for Wick to return.

Can you fall in love without ever having really spoken to someone? Can you overcome a horrific past enough to find your soul’s contentment?

Those questions are answered in the short story of Love Rising. Sold by his father into indentured servitude (although Francis is certain his father thought it was a path to a better life for his son), Francis has been raped and abused by the plantation owner who never bothered to release him. After reaching his breaking point and realizing he would die if h

I really like this story. there was something about love between a human and a merman that I like to read. I liked that they had problems communicating at first because it seemed more realistic then they both happen to speak the same language. Wick the merman and Francis fall in love but it isn't easy. I like that wick Went away to change so he could be with Francis but I want more of the story how did he get changed? what did it cost Wick? Al

Piper Vaughn first introduced Isla Sagrario years ago in Black John, the short story she contributed to the Dreamspinner Press pirate anthology Cross Bones, and is now revisiting the 18th century island she (and M.J. O’Shea) created then, a place where men can live and love openly, in Love Rising.

Love Rising was a super short read but also a really sweet read. However, everything is pretty surface level and you just have to take things as they happen. We never find out how Wick washed up on shore, how he gain legs, or why exactly these two fell so desperately for each other. If you just let all that go, then it's a cute read.

I will definitely continue with this series because I want to know more about Wick and where he came from. I also want to know more about Isla Sagrario and the other men who live there...great story! ...more

Finding a mermaid, taking care of it, falling in love, sex, sex, sex and more sex —and it’s a super short tale (No pun intended). My thoughts? Heard it before. It’s the basics of cliche mermaid model story. It's nothing new. If you're interested in a tale with this plot, there are plenty more options that are better choices than this. Go look for an interesting story elsewhere.

This is my opinion and never meant to completely discourage anyone from reading anything th

On the island of Sagrario, Francis Holland is just one of the many men wanting a safe and welcome home to be who they really are: men who love other men. Francis has been on Sagrario just long enough to feel the effects of being alone but when he’s tasked with cleaning up a mess on the shore, his life changes forever when he finds Wick, an unconscious merman, and brings him back to health. Before he realizes it, Wick and Francis develop a

What an unexpected delight from Piper Vaughn. Love Rising is a sweet story about Francis and Wick. It takes place in the 1700s on the island of Sagrario. Sagrario is a safe haven for those who do not fit into “normal” society. Nobody is persecuted for loving members of the same sex. Francis fled to this island after living a harsh life. Though the island allows to be free to love whoever he wants, Frances is lon

3.25 stars. Francis comes to the island of Sagrario after fleeing a cruel master he was indentured to. Sagrario is a rare place were men can find comfort in each other without fear. Despite his harsh past, Francis hopes for more than the occasional one night stand but newcomers to Sagrario are rare and most of the men there are in relationships.

One day while sorting through debris on the beach he finds a merman unconscious. Stunned and immediately protective, Francis takes the man home glad he

A solid 3.5 stars. This was a sweet fairy tale - an enjoyable read.

Francis has escaped a brutal past and is living on Isla Sagrario, an island where men can love each other without fear of persecution. He lives a solitary life, lonely and longing for love and wanting to matter to someone. While Francis wishes for more, he doesn't really expect his life to change. In true fairy tale fashion, Francis discovers an injured, unconscious Merman washed upon the shore. The sheer impossibility of it entr

Piper Vaughn’s Love Rising is first and foremost a fairy tale. I enjoyed it despite brief forays into melodrama. I loved the premise of the setting, an island in the 1720’s, which served as a gay commune of sorts. Unfortunately, the setting isn’t explored that much other than to show that even in this safe haven the hero, Francis is still lonely and isolated. He maybe forgiven then for falling desperately in love

“Love,” Wick murmured, his voice tremulous and thin. Francis had tried to explain the word, but even if they hadn’t spoken different tongues, how could one ever define the undefinable? Love simply was. Francis knew beyond certainty there was no other word he could use to describe his feelings for Wick.
This cute little story tells of a lonely man seeking to find his one and only, something he finds in the strangest way - with a mermaid, no less. They don't have words, but they have feelings a
