Archie Comics has always been known for their child-friendly comicbooks and digests so it was surprise seeing the publisher veer off into more adult concepts. I was even more surprised to see Francesco Francavilla attached to it. I think the publisher has finally recognized their offerings with comicbook readership skewing towards older readers. Kids just aren't interested in comics anymore with their games and the internet to entertain them.

Reading Afterlife With Archie is a smorgasbord of pop-

Thanks Comixology! Free Comics are always great.

It's nearly the end of Horror Week Shallow Buddy Reads, so I perused by Comixology library and came across this...

This is only the first issue, but there's far more to read.

It starts off simply: Hot Dog, Jughead's dog, gets hit by a car, and dies...he ends up getting help from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, to bring him back from the dead...BAD IDEA...He bites Juggy and then we see the downward spiral begin.

I really enjoyed this little start, becau

Forget Riverdale! Why didn't they make a show based on THIS?! It's so much more creepy and interesting. I didn't take to The Walking Dead but this is a zombie apocalypse series I'd actually enjoy. The Sabrina spin-off in the second half of the issue looks promising too. ...more

Wow. This was not what I expected at all. I decided to read some of the newer Archie comics when I watched the show Riverdale, and this was a great first pick. It is an excellent zombie comic, which was surprising, and both the text and the art had a great balance between an homage to the old comics and intriguing new ideas. Can't wait for the next one. ...more

First and foremost I do not understand why Veronica and Betty fight over Archie. Is he heir to some throne? Does he have lots of money? Archie doesn't even look that appealing. I've never read any of the original Archie comics. I remember being a kid, flipping through some of the comics that my great grandparents had at their house. I just remembered being confused on the love triangle. I was kind of worried that the story was going to focus on that but it did not. Spoilers ahead.

After reading the new Sabrina, I thought I’d try this.

Not your mom and dad’s Archie, kids.

Same author as the Sabrinas but different artist, so this has a different feel—but it’s for sure in the same vein. I’ll definitely keep reading!

This was super quick read but very fun! I’m definitely liking this series a bit more than the chilling adventures of Sabrina, so I’m excited to continue!

Zombiefied Riverdale

I was fully satisfied with the plot they put together. This could have been totally stupid, but it’s not. Great artwork, good premise, lots of “scary” fun.

Books 1-10.
DONT BRING THINGS BACK FROM THE DEAD!!! How many times must we learn this! Also don’t hit a dog with your car. Leave to die and thus setting off the end of the world. What would you do to save the life of your best friend? Maybe visit your friend who just happens to be a witch and ask her to do something stupid?! School dances are meant to be fun. They are not meant to be where you see your friend/ classmate eat another one! I love zombies and spooky stuff so when I came across this

I never read the original Archie comics, and I can't say I was super interested in reading these, until I read the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and thought, maybe this could be cool. I also recently watched a documentary at Boston Comic Con called "Archie's Betty" so I felt like I had a pretty good understanding of the basic plot of the Archie comics to go on.

Sabrina appears in the first few pages, when a distraught Jughead shows up on her doorstep with his dead dog. The witches can't resurrec

Free comic!

At first, this seemed like nothing more than a pretty straightforward urban fantasy zombie tale. Nice art, funny story. And then it ended. Of course, it's just a single issue.

After it ended I worked out that Archie is an existing character. Wikipedia then told me Archie comics have been running since 1941, or similar.

I guess if I had known this when reading, I might have got more out of it. In the end I guess it's fun to see an established character switching genres from one thing to

Pretty sweet combo!! Modern Archie with zombies?? Brilliant!!

So Jughead's dog dies and he asks Sabrina, the teenage witch, to help. Her creepy aunts say not to resurrect it but dumb girl does it anyways and is punished. Turns out dogs can become zombies too and poor Jughead morphs into Jugdead.

Betty and Veronica are still annoyingly after Archie. bleck! The artwork is pretty wicked in this comic with its simple sketchy stylized portrayals of the classic gang and very selective colors give this

A marvelous done take on the archie unverse becoming infected with zombies and Jughead (or as he rightly is called Jugdead, becoming their leader. What makes this comic work and not just become a silly gag is that the writers play it totally straight. this is the archie universe(circa 2013) invaded by zombies. Well done all around, these characters are more 3 dimensional than I ever remember them being. However the last time I ever "read" an archei comic was probably 1978 or so.

Good surprisingly

This was also part of the Humble Bundle, and it seemed like a good Halloween read.

I'm still getting used to reading individual issues because they are so short that it is hard to get a real idea of what is going on and more importantly will I like the story. This first issue is certainly just setting the scene for things to come, but the story looks quite interesting and I'm looking forward to continue reading, although for me it's cert

I read numbers 1 through 5 as a single volume, so what I say here is for all of them.

This should be funny, or controversial, hopefully both. Why would you take an established world and throw zombies in and just have it be a zombie sotry?
Sure, there is some poking fun at Jughead and Veronica in particular, and recasting of Nancy and Ginger and the two rich kids who loathe Riverdale, but I wanted sastire or blowing away ideas of Archie past.
They are such a fast read, though, that I got through it
Imaginative, entertaining, and beautifully drawn. The rivalry between Veronica and Betty was developed in a really interesting way. I'm not usually a fan of symbolism, but the symbolism at the Halloween party was obvious enough that I could understand it and subtle enough that I enjoyed it. The author made an effort to include at least a dozen in-jokes related to long-running Archie characters . . . I'm sure there were many more in-jokes that I didn't catch. ...more

Read in Afterlife with Archie, Vol. 1: Escape from Riverdale. Archie and friends must fight for their lives against zombies.

#1: Afterlife with Archie - Jughead's dog, Hot Dog, dies, but comes back.

Fun. Creepy. Highly entertaining. Great for Archie fans who also like zombie stories.

This is a new series, a complete new take on Archie. It’s Archie meets The Walking Dead. What could be better?

It’s the week before Halloween, somebody is running through the woods, they are running fast as they can, carrying something heavy. The wooden steps of the front porch creak as the runner springboards themselves up the steps. BANG! BANG! BANG! Echoed through the house. It’s 3AM and Sabrina wakes up. Her aunts tell her not to open the door, but she does. It’s Jughead on the porch of her h

Surprisingly good

I have to admit that I was a little skeptical of this series. I loved the Archie comics as a kid so much that I even had a Josie and the Pussycats poster on my wall for years. As a wheelchair user, I was really excited about the series introducing a disabled character and I came across this one while searching for the newer Archie issues. I just didn't like the idea of taking a well loved classic and turning it on its ear with another zombie apocalypse type storyline. Much to m

Why is this so good?!

Archie is one of my all time favorite comics. I used to sit under the covers and read Archie with a flashlight until my mom would tell at me to go to sleep.
I honestly went in to this thinking I was going to hate it. In my mind they were ruining Archie and just jumping on the whole zombie craze to make some cash. Which might be the truth, but they did a damn good job doing it.

Saying goodbye is hard

When you’re beloved fur baby dies, your heart breaks into a million pieces. You would do anything to have them back with you. But, that’s impossible, right? Not if you have friends in high places. Enter Sabrina. Jughead’s beloved dog is killed and he brings Hotdog to her to resurrect. This is completely against all witch rules, but Sabrina does it anyway. And we all know what happens when the dead comes back.

Afterlife with Archie reminds me of the good old Archie comics with an adult horror spin. Nothing has changed about the characters so far, almost the same personalities as the originals. Besides the fact Jugheads personally seems a lot older than what it was in the originals.

Overall think this comic is great, finished it in a matter of 5 minutes which was kind of sad. Can't wait to start the next!

I was excited about this but it wasn't really my thing. That said it was interesting enough that I did read to the end and I'm curious about how it goes. Whether I'm curious enough to check out the next is unsure, though I'm not ruling it out. Drawing is well done and if you're a zombie fan you are sure to enjoy.
I never read the original comics but I found this after reading the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as part of a reading challenge for Spookathon. I'm so glad I found it! I want to read them all! I recommend it for anyone who is an Archie fan and loves horror OR someone who just loves horror and never picked up an Archie comic in their lives! I can see myself really getting into these. ...more
