The holidays are supposed to be fun, right? Parties, shopping, hot cocoa, festive sweaters, and celebrations with family and friends—it all sounds like a dream. But this year feels different and complicated, at least for me, Lucy Ferguson.
My brother's spontaneous engagement has thrown my family into a tailspin, and to add to the chaos, the return of Chase Anderson, the local hockey star, has brought a whole new set of dilemmas into my life. I keep telling myself I'm not attracted to Chase, but my heart seems to disagree.
As I navigate through the confusion and conflicting emotions, I can't deny there's something about him that draws me in, though I try to convince myself otherwise. However, fate has other plans—he's my brother’s best friend, and that unspoken rule of not dating him stands firmly in our way.
To make matters even more frustrating, life at the office continues to throw me into awkward situations I never anticipated.
Could this chaotic holiday season be the key to unlocking something even better than I've ever dared to dream of? Find out in this heartwarming romantic comedy, where the magic of the season might just overcome life's bewildering moments.

I was honored to be given a e-book ARC of A Complicated Christmas by Melissa Baldwin and I definitely feel like it’s worth the read for a quick romance! This book follows a girl named Lucy who is surprised by the chemistry she feels with her brother’s long-time best friend when he comes back to town after a career ending hockey injury. I liked the MMC but didn’t love the FMC in this novel and I especially could’ve lived without the toxic sister-in-law, Hillary; to be honest, the conflict with Hillary felt like a reach and everyone’s reactions seemed completely over the top in my opinion.

I think I would’ve been more inclined to give a higher rating if this book has picked a side and had given 100% to being a light/fluffy romance instead of making up a conflict for the sake of having one.

With this being said, I enjoyed Lucy’s friends as well as the Christmasy events and family dinners involved in the story! I would’ve loved to have gotten more involved with the development of some of these characters!

The holidays can be full of drama and complications due to that and this is just what this book showcases.

Lucy really grew on me as the story progressed and I really enjoyed watching her reconnect with her brother’s best friend, Chase, and to see their story quickly unfold through the pages. Lucy has such a solid group of friends who help her navigate this secret attraction and her complicated relationship with her future sister-in-law.

I absolutely adored ex-pro hockey player Chase. He’s the sweetest guy around and it was so much fun to watch him get to know the grown-up version of Lucy and find his inner strength to go for what he really wants in life.

The cast of characters is perfect, from Mama Fergie (who mothers everyone–in a good way) to slightly detached parents to a wise mall Santa. The feelings this story brings up are holiday warm and cozy, full of magic and love. This is one Melissa Baldwin story that is not to be missed!

Thank you to the author for an advanced digital copy of this book!

The book follows Lucy as she navigates a strained relationship with her future sister-in-law and also a coworker/friend who recently started dating her ex. On top of that her brother’s best friend Chase is back in town—and she realizes she’s developing feelings for him.

This is a good, fluffy Christmas romance book and I read the whole thing in one day! I do think some of the conflict was a little overplayed in the story—but it was still a sweet story that will definitely get you in the feels for this holiday season. It reminds me of a Hallmark movie and would be perfect to curl up and read on a couch with something warm this Christmas.

Go buy this book when it hits shelves November 1st!

I read it in one day!!!

Couldn't put it down! It's such a loveable and swoon-worthy slow burn romcom. There was never a dull moment. It had me needing to know what was going to happen next.

The supportive friendships and family were absolutely heartwarming. Chase and Lucy's whole dynamic and slow build had me falling head over heels. I swear I could feel Lucy's butterflies right along with her. Add in the magic and fun of the Christmas season, and this book couldn't be more perfect.

A Very Complicated Christmas is a must-read this season. It's magical, swoon-worthy, and completely loveable. Highly recommend reading!!

I’ve only read one other book by this author but this is my clear favorite. Chase is flat out swoony and I enjoyed watching the drama unfold between all of the relationships. It’s just plain fun and an easy read.

The Costco trips were legit life and made me laugh so hard. Lucy eventually grew on me and her group of friends were so fun and maybe we will get to see what happens to them in future books. A great read for Christmas or any holiday you need a bit of romcom in your life.

This was a fun Christmas read (even though I read it October it just made me that much more excited for the holidays!)

Funny, light, exciting and kept me engaged and wanting to read the next chapter even when I knew I should set it down! Definitely add this to your list for the holidays, you will not regret it!

Not the worst, but also not the best. It was an entertaining, cute holiday romance, but there were some typos/grammatical errors (??). The writing was also not the best, but I’m pretty easy to entertain. LOL. Read at your own risk.

Complicated does not even begin to describe what is about to occur in Lucy Ferguson's life. She is already in the midst of drama at the office with her ex-boyfriend dating her friend from work. Awkward does not even begin to describe this work setting. Now Lucy is dreading a dinner at her parents' house where she will have to be subjected to her brother's bride-to-be, Hillary. Hillary gives new meaning to the term bridezilla. She knows she will have to be on her best behavior for the sake of her brother and her parents. What she does not count on is seeing her brother's best friend, Chase Anderson, who is a retired professional hockey player. Chase Anderson basically lived at their house with her brother when she was growing up. The last time they saw each other, she was just the little sister and he was the second big brother in the house. When she sees him in her parents' kitchen, she knows that the little girl who saw Chase Anderson all those years ago, is now a woman who sees a very handsome man, one she could definitely be attracted to. This can't be happening. After all, her brother would never approve and her future sister-in-law has plans for her best friend and Chase.

This was such a fun book to read. I loved the dynamics between Lucy and her friends. They provided plenty of entertainment. The chemistry between Lucy and Chase was almost immediate. Chase was a little shocked to see the woman before him, but he hid it well. The trips to Costco for Chase were hilarious. I definitely despised Hillary. I wanted to reach into the book and pull all of her hair out. She thrived on drama, as long as that drama made her the center stage star. There was definitely drama, but there was also some humor mixed in, but most of all this story showed a family who loved one another trying to make it work. The Christmas setting was perfect because everyone knows that though we love our families, Christmas is always chaotic. I love Christmas romantic comedies, and this one was perfect for me.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Needing a fun light Christmas Romcom without the bedroom scenes? Then look no further. “A Very Complicated Christmas” has all the swoon without the spice.
While planning their wedding during the Christmas season, Kevin and his fiancée Hillary have their eyes on setting Chase up with Hillary’s maid of honor and best friend, Emily. Chase has other plans.
Lucy, Kevin’s little sister, does not get a long with her future sister-in-law, who is adamant that her best friend be set up with Chase. Lucy has other plans.
Lucy and Chase grew up together. Chase was practically family because he spent so much time at Lucy and Kevin’s house growing up. One day, they realize they have feelings for each other and start to date. But what would happen if Lucy’s family finds out? How and when should they tell them? Read “A Very Complicated Christmas” by Melissa Baldwin to find out.
Forbidden romance with some office drama thrown in makes for a perfect read. I liked the way Chase is obsessed with Costco. Some funny dialogue surrounding his obsession. He is a real gentleman who treats Lucy with respect throughout the whole story. Another thing I enjoyed was how Lucy’s relationship with her parents, especially her mother. It is evident that they have a strong relationship. The whole family has a strong relationship, which provided Chase a safe haven he could turn to as a boy growing up.
I recommend this Romcom if you enjoy stories with:
-Kissing only romance
-Brother’s Best Friend
-Wedding Planning
-Christmas festivities
-Strong Family Relationships
-Best friends who are there for each other
CW: Kissing only
Mild, occasional swearing
TW: Complicated family relationships, Family arguments/fights

A perfect quick Christmas romance for hallmark and Christmas lovers everywhere!!

Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: No Spice

This is the second book I’ve read by Melissa Baldwin, and once again I love it! A Very Complicated Christmas, is the perfect book for those looking for a quick and easy brothers best friend, friend to lovers, hallmark-esque, Christmas romance!!

I really loved the plot of this book, our MFC, Lucy, is a true Christmas lover, and while excited for the holidays is a bit disappointed to be facing the holidays alone again, especially when those around her are coupling up. Just as Lucy decides that she’s not going to cave to the holiday blues though and romance will find her when the time is right, her brothers best friend, Chase, waltzes back in and the attraction is instant. And through an agreement to remain friends in order spare any angst a relationship may cause with her family, to a few hesitant dates, to an awkward outing, this story had me laughing, falling in love, and rooting for our main characters through every situation!!

It wasn’t just the plot that sold me though, I loved Baldwins characters!! Our MFC, Lucy was superb! She was sweet, and caring, and a great friend, family oriented (especially when she was trying not to rock the boat with her brothers fiancé), not to mention Christmas obsessed all making her such a lovable main character! And so relatable, we’ve all had family member we don’t necessarily get along with but we try our hardest to be cordial with!! Then we had our MMC, Chase, and he was just so sweet! He was the perfect southern gentleman (which I feel fits since this is set in Tennessee)!! All of his sweet gestures towards Lucy were just so endearing, and not only his love for Lucy but his love and concern for her family were amazing!! Honestly Chase has skyrocketed to the top of my contemporary romance book bf list!!

Overall, I loved this story and highly recommend it for anyone trying to get into the Christmas spirit!!

HAPPY READING 📖

I love feel good holiday stories and A Very Complicated Christmas did not disappoint! It was full of fun holiday parties, family meddling, and a slow burn love story between our main character and her brother's best friend.

Lucy Ferguson is the lovable FMC that we can all relate to. She is down to earth, a little clumsy, and has two ride or die best friends, Mickey and Andrea - these ladies relationship is what every woman wants in a female friendship! Currently, Lucy is struggling with her brother, Kevin's, whirlwind engagement to the Queen of cutting comments, Hillary. Lucy is close to her family and often goes home for family dinners. At one particular family dinner, an old childhood friend of Kevin returns. Enter Chase Anderson, ex-professional hockey player and heart-throb. Chase was giving off major Ian Somerhalder vibes, including those STUNNING blue eyes. Chase and Lucy have an instant new connection and can't seem to stay away from each other.

I loved how the relationship unfolded and the burn wasn't too slow. Of course, it can't be the holidays without some drama, which I lived for! If you are looking for a fun holiday book, that gives you all the Christmasy feels and an adorable love story, you definitely need to read this book!

I absolutely loved this book! It’s always hard to get anything done when I’m reading one of Ms. Baldwin’s books, just because they are so hard to put down! I find myself doing the “just one more chapter” thing. Lucy is having a difficult time with several events that have come into her life, thus complicating the Christmas season that should be filled with joy and happiness. Although she has a job she adores, her ex-boyfriend, who seems to want to play the field with his coworkers (including Lucy), is now dating her good friend who sits next to her at work and is constantly hanging around. Also, her brother is suddenly engaged to a woman who just doesn’t seem to like Lucy, and the feeling is mutual, and it seems she is being constantly bullied by her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Hillary. However, her brother’s best friend, Chase, a famous hockey player who retires and moves back home, comes into her life and there is an immediate attraction, but her family and soon-to-be sister-in-law all want to set Chase up with Hillary’s best friend. As Lucy and Chase get to know each other better, the attraction turns into something more while the family drama just keeps escalating, and they are faced with a very important question: How will they respond to Lucy and Chase's relationship? The whole book has a feel good vibe, and is a very enjoyable, relaxing read.

Talk about an appropriate title! A very complicated Christmas indeed! There was a LOT going on in this story--- Lucy is dealing with some drama at her office, the upcoming wedding of her brother and sister-in-law to be who seems to have it out for her... and the return of her brother's best friend and some unexpected chemistry between them... despite everyone's insistence to set him up with the maid of honor. Phew... that's a lot, right? I've got to admit that sometimes when a story has THIS much going on, it can be a little bit much for me... but I found I really enjoyed this one just as it was. Perhaps because the sheer craziness of it all was kind of the point of the story! I found myself smiling so much throughout this story... and so much of that was definitely the chemistry between Chase and Lucy. Oh my goodness, I really just couldn't get enough of these two together! And Chase's newfound love of Costco? So much more charming than it should be... but I loved it!

And of course, there was lots of holiday cheer too! This was a fast paced read and perfect if you're looking for some fun holiday reading! I definitely enjoyed every minute of it!

A Very Complicated Christmas is a closed-door romance with kisses only. There is a handful of minor language throughout the story as well.

4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lucy is the FMC, she loves her job, has 2 best every girl wishes for and every though she’s excited about the holidays she a little down about being single. Chase the MMC and her brother best friend, has returned to town to settle down after an injury ends his hockey career.

From the first first page of this book I knew I was going to like it. I was like wow is this book about my life, because it’s no way I would leave my warm house to go Black Friday shopping…Not when the internet works just fine lol.

Chase and Lucy had soooo much chemistry, I was surprised they were able to hide it, for that long. I also understand chases love for Costco.. I myself am I Sam’s club girlie but I won’t hold that against him! I actually loved all the side character except Hilary, I do kind of wish we got to the bottom of her issues with Lucy.

But overall I loved this book so much,I kept telling myself I would read one more chapter then do laundry… the laundry it’s still not done lol. Literally the only thing I hoped could’ve been different was that it wasn’t from a dual POV, I would’ve loved reading from Chases pov..That’s the only reason I didn’t give it a 5/5

This story was so sweet, so festive, so hearts and holiday infused, you simply can't miss it. Kevin and Hilary are in first Christmas together and wedding prep mode, meaning the whole of his family at least is involved... and while Hilary is a force, there are other sparks flying. Lucy is the little sister all grown up, and Chase is the long time BFF of her big brother just back in town... can we see where the potential couple might be? 😌

Yeah, well that makes two of us because the family, as loving as they are, and Hilary, are totally invested...in Emily and Chase. Who is she? Exactly. No, no, I'm kidding...sort of. She's sweet to Hilary's not so much, and her BFF, but anyone with eyes 👀 can see what's brewing between Chase and Lucy. Alas, blinders are a choice to be worn, but when they come off, fireworks often follow!

I won't spoil the fun, but trust me, it's a closed door, sweet as a candy cane cocoa 😋 ♥️ holiday romance you HAVE to read! The characters are fabulous, even the ones you're not about to include in your Christmas card list, and scenes fantastic, and the romance aww inducing.

Adorable with a capital “A”! I loved this brother’s best friend romance. Set around Christmas, there is plenty of holiday feeling to go around. One aspect that I really enjoyed was that there was no long term or childhood crush, no long pining. Lucy and Chase just both had new feelings towards each other as adults, after not seeing each other for a long time. “Over the years he spent days at my parents’ house, but I must’ve been completely oblivious.” It was really cute how they just danced around each other for a bit, attracted and making small moves, but hesitant to do too much. Chase especially. His attachment to her family made it a frightening proposition for him. And of course it was all complicated by Lucy’s very difficult future sister-in-law. There were some great funny moments. Costco, anyone? Lol. IYKYK. There was also a beautiful progression of romantic, swoony moments, from the small o the big. I also found the family engagement and the way it was all dealt with very engaging. It is a sweet and cute story. This is a closed door story with mild innuendo and a few instances of mild harsh language.

I am a fan of Melissa Baldwin's books and brother's best friend is my favorite trope. So A Very Complicated Christmas was the perfect read for me. Lucy Ferguson lives and works in Tennessee. She is a graphic designer at Creative Canvas Designs. Her brother, Kevin, is engaged and soon to be married to Hillary. Kevin's long time best friend is Chase Anderson, who played hockey for the Tennessee Wolves until a career ending injury. When Chase decides to settle down in Tennessee, Lucy reconnects with him. Before she knows it, she has real feelings for him. When they decide to date, Kevin and Hillary don't take the news well. Besides this trope being my favorite, I really liked Lucy and Chase, and Lucy's friends Mickey and Andrea. Hillary, the Bridezilla, is very entertaining, but not someone I'd like to meet. Since this book takes place during Christmas time, it is filled with parties and family get togethers. This book was a delight to read and I would love to see what happens to all these characters!

This is my first book from Melissa Baldwin and I can’t wait to read more. Especially her Cozy Mysteries.
Right away Lucy spoke to me. She’s feels the same way I do about Black Friday shopping. 🤣 Lucy, Mickey, and Andrea had a great relationship. I enjoyed how they played off each other and were always there for one another. I enjoyed it when they were together. Mama Fergie is so kind and wonderful. Lucy’s dad was also a gem. A lovely voice of reason and quiet observer. Chase, loved him. I enjoyed how the author brought him into the story, gradually having him around. Then BANG, I wanted him to be on every page. The Costco references were very funny. And so relatable. (Home Alone 2 is far superior!) There are some tricky relationships with others and I was pleased with the resolutions. Some of my favorite tropes are referenced: friends to lovers, brother’s best friend, hidden romance, Christmas romance.
I received an eARC from the author. All views and opinions are mine.

great Christmas read

This was a great Christmas read! I love the relationships of these characters, the storyline, and lessons learned. Chase and Lucy grew up together since he’s her brother’s best friend. He went on to play hockey while she established herself as a graphic designer. A career ending injury brings him back home where shocking sparks fly between the two. Her brother is wedding planning with his “oh so wonderful fiancée” that doesn’t exactly like Lucy. Her fake attitude doesn’t full everything though, especially Lucy’s quiet dad. Go dad! Hillary is dead set on match making her best friend with Chase, but the sparks aren’t flying. Everything gets complicated with all the drama and tense feelings, but it will surely be wrapped up and tied with a nice bow before Christmas and Mom’s birthday.

This was a great way to end a book!

HALLMARK CHRISTMAS, BUT MAKE IT A BOOK?✨️✨️✨️

I received this for free as an audiobook & was pretty cute! Very easy to follow along and you felt like you were having a in-depth conversation with main character. The FMC was very quirky & entertaining to listen to so I was never bored hearing her rambles!

Now as for the story, I genuinely felt as though I was listening to a Hallmark Christmas movie but in book format. If you enjoy Hallmark movies, then this definitely would be your cup of tea.

However as someone who is typically a mystery/thriller type of gal, I was really expecting more drama and backstory out of the sister-in-law and the reason she treats the main character the way she does. That part was a little lack luster to me and I wish that got fleshed out a bit more, but other than that the story is fairly cute and it was a solid story to get me back into Christmas story reads. I love how the main two end up together and it was definitely worth the read!

Just finished this book and am sitting in all the feels. This is a sweet story with all the Christmas vibes.

I loved all the main characters except the soon to be sister in law Hillary. But someone has to be the villain, right?

Lucy is a graphic designer who just got out of a brief relationship a few months ago. She’s surprised to find that her brother’s best friend, Chase, has returned to town to settle down after an injury ends his hockey career.

I loved the development of their relationship. It was perfectly paced, a little fast, but they’ve known each other their whole lives. The supporting characters- her parents and girlfriends were awesome.

If you want to read a light romantic comedy with all the heartwarming feelings this is the book for you. I read it all in one sitting and enjoyed every minute.

This book was very fun and sweet. If you’re looking for a book for Christmas time that will leave you feeling lighthearted this is for you.
Lucy is feeling a bit of a third wheel in a couple of situations and her brother’s new fiance doesn’t seem to like her at all. There is some drama regarding a friend and a bit of drama with her brother and his fiance for obvious reasons in the story. Her brother’s friend Chase enters the picture and suddenly she’s seeing him in a new way. Will her Christmas end up being everything she hopes for?
I enjoyed this book. It was sweet. I gave 4 stars because there was quite a bit of drama (thankfully pretty much resolved.) However, it was still a fun read and very nice for Christmas!

Growing up Lucy only saw Chase as her brother’s best friend that was annoying and always around.

The first time she saw Chase in years she had a “weird” reaction to him. She also couldn’t stop thinking about him. Chase was grown and moving back home after injuries forced him to retire from the NHL. He is also the best ma in her brother’s upcoming wedding.

Her friends Andrea and Mickey encouraged Lucy to tell Chase. She was hesitant because Hilary (her future sister-in-law) wanted Chase with her best friend Emily. Lucy’s mom encouraged Hilary.

Chase went out of his way to spend time with Lucy. They enjoyed each other’s company and wanted to be together even if that meant Chase lost her brother and her parents. Which he almost did when they found out.

In the end, they were able to work things with Chase keeping his best friend and getting his happily ever after with Lucy.

Holiday Feels: C-
Overall Book: D+

Even though this is set at Christmas, there isn't much of a holiday feel coming from this book.

This book is missing so much, I kept waiting for something to happen and for the FMC to get a backbone and stand up for herself.

There are multiple tropes thrown in this story, but none are well developed so the entire plot just hangs there like a big blah. There needed to be flashbacks! Something showing the relationship growth between Lucy and Chase. This book needed angst. You can't have a brother's best friend romance without angst.

This also felt very insta-love to me, and I am not a fan. I think if the author showed more of the past relationship it would have made more sense when Chase became a love sick puppy.

Really disappointed, wanted more.

Changing dynamics

It is said that the only constant in life is change. There were so many changing relationship dynamics in this book, not the least of which were those of Lucy, her older brother Kevin, and his bestie, Chase. The Lucy/Kevin sibling relationship had already begun to shift when he announced his engagement after only a few months to Hillary, who continuously makes snide and belittling comments to and about Lucy.
As Lucy/Chase start to slowly explore their attraction to each other, while Hillary and Kevin try to push Chase into a relationship with Hillary's BFF Emily, all the relationship dynamics change faster. Parent/child, siblings, BFFs, coworkers, friends becoming more, ending a cherished career, this Christmas holiday with wedding planning drama will leave Lucy's life forever changed.

I bought a copy of this story and voluntarily chose to share my review.
