Gravestones jutted out of the ground like candles on a birthday cake. They marked an occasion in a person’s life-span, but were ultimately forgotten once the ceremony was over.

The above quote is the opening of In the Light of Madness. It gives you a taster of the quality of the writing, which was a breeze to read. Its comfortable pace was set from the beginning and the short, snappy chapters allowed me to shadow DI Eva Wednesday and co. as they investigate the a m

Hemmie Martin has written a detective story brimming with page turning suspense and intrigue that will not disappoint if you like crime novels. Her main characters, Detective Inspector Eva Wednesday and her partner Detective Sargent Jacob Lennox, are as rich and complex as the plot, which is basically investigating murder against a backdrop of secrets and lies in a small village. The novel is full of twists and turns that keep you flipping the page to find out what will happen whilst becoming co ...more

I am a big fan of crime novels. I liked the characters and the storylines and there were twists and turns and surprises that kept the book interesting but I didn't find it totalling absorbing.
I also got the sense that the author had trouble chosing names for both characters and places. I hope there will be a series as there is great potential here for the characters to develop and I would be very interesed to find out more about them in their working and private lives.

This is a Gripping detective story that introduces Detective Inspector Eva Wednesday and her partner Detective Sargent Jacob Lennox. Both must investigate murder against a backdrop of secrets and lies in a small village. The crimes they uncover rock the closed world of a small rural community and challenge the resources of the two detectives professionally and personally. Fans of detective stories will not be disappointed.

I'm not normally one to pick crime as my genre, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much the characters stories outshone the crime! I was engrossed by the story and struggled to but the book down. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a gripping read not just those who like crime and contemporary! Very well written!

I have met this author several times and I finally took the plunge to purchase one of her books, and I'm so glad that I did. I was first attracted by the cover and then when I asked the author what book of her's should I start with then she recommended this book. This is the start of the DC Wednesday series. The characters are real and likeable, Wednesday is a hard working woman in a predominately male orientated role. She has her own personal dramas and when they start to infringe on her profes ...more

This is the first in the DI Wednesday series and I loved it. Meeting Eva Wednesday and seeing how she works. The case is that of a murdered teen, with another missing, and yet there seem to be too many threads and no way to connect them to find the killer. The book is well written and engaging from the start. I loved it and found it a pleasurable read. Onto the next one now! Highly recommended.

The crime was really interesting and kept me guessing until the end, but what kept me reading more than anything else was the development of Wednesday and Lennox's personal lives. Thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn't wait to read the next one
