Martin Cheek graduated in graphic design in 1981 and first specialised in illustration and puppet animation, going on to set up his own film production company. He then became increasingly interested in the decorative arts, especially mosaic, and with his patient eye for detail and ability to create animated sequences, his mosaic work now benefits from his earlier experiences - it is clear that character and movement play an important part of his work. Now an acclaimed professional mosaic artist, he is regularly commissioned by both private and corporate clients and has had many one-man exhibitions. He runs regular weekend courses in mosaic.
This is a good basic book that will allow a mostly novice crafter to get into mosaics. Some vocabulary is not defined and not all tools and materials are illustrated or fully described. It would have been extremely helpful for the author to identify the specific adhesives he uses, even if that information might now be out of date. I think other books do a better job on this aspect but this book excels in the projects. The projects are well-done (I especially love the Gustav Klimt mirror) and accessible for a student but I think the Time Scale ratings are wildly optimistic. I would have appreciated more detail photos of the finished projects, too. The Gallery section of the book is very inspirational, showing work the author has completed.
