2.5 stars for this indie shapeshifter romance. For a bit of a change of pace, our focus here is on bear shapeshifters. Hawke is the young black bear Alpha over all of the bear shapeshifters, burdened by the mess his clan is in, because his dead father, the Alpha before him, really fouled things up. Also Hawke is badly in need of a mate. Awww! Luckily, he hears about Echo (EchoHawk! haha .... sorry, that was the name of one of my law professors ...), a young black bear shapeshifter who was taken ...more

“Don’t be afraid. I feel your fear, mate. Our clan is loving, and we don’t keep slaves. You will be completely safe and unharmed. I hope one day you find yourself happy even.”

“I wouldn’t know happy if it slapped me in the ass.”

“Burden” was a fast paced intro to this new series. Apart from Hawke and Echo's love story, we've got to meet a lot of other characters who I'm certain will make comebacks in the

This was more than the mate-claim.
It was more than love.
More than a fluttering of our hearts, or a tingle when she entered a room.
My mate owned me. And I was happy to be her property.
By the time I’d hummed the song twice over, she was fast asleep. And in case we did have the Creator’s ear that night, I sent him a simple plea. Long gone were my whines for myself and my failures in running the clan, formed just for me, I whispered, “All I want is for my mate and my clan to be happy.”

This was an absolutely beautiful paranormal love story! It has all the action of a good shifter book, with the deep affection that only a mate bond can provide. Echo is just amazing! She had such a horrible time growing up, thinking she was alone and being used and abused. Now that she is given a chance, she proves to be smart, loving, and loyal to the core. Then there’s Hawk, this gorgeous Alpha who struggles to rule his people. He couldn’t even imagine how much one female could make until he f ...more

Echo has always been a burden on the Grizzly bear clan after being found in the woods as a baby they raised her. She’s spent her whole life trying to prove that she has worth working to earn a spot in the clan. Instead she’s been worked to the bone and treated like a slave but things are about to change. Receiving a call that the Grizzly bears have one of his own Hawke has to check it out and if need be save the female black bear. He never expecte

Lila always writes such Swoon-Tastic men who make your heart pitter patter and turn your insides into a Gooey mess. Hawke is just another one of those guys to add to the list.

I will not divulge many details as to what happens in the story because you simply just Need to snag up a copy and read all the Goodiness going on in this story.

Our lead guy Hawke is a strong, sinfully sexy, rugged man who has a kind heart but is rather on the lonely/stressed side. He is the Alpha to a clan of Werebears an

I have read many paranormal romance books over the years, and I must say that "Burden" was among some of my favorites. It was exceptional, captivating, and very entertaining. I loved the characters, especially Hawke and Echo, and the storyline was superb. I mean, how can you go wrong when the characters have such cool names? That's right, you can't. I loved how unique and intriguing the story was - it certainly kept my interest throughout. I even read it in one day, if that's any indication of h ...more
Lila Felix had me ready to read just with the fact that it's one of her books, add in the fact that this is her first paranormal romance and I was freaking out. I swear the moment it hit my email, I was bouncing around and squeeing - loudly. One of those rare authors that I trust implicitly with a story, Burden didn't disappoint and I was left with a smile on my face and ready for the next book in the series.

First thoughts: So here is why i am torn...This was was amazingly written, like the writing style, the voice, wonderful. I could fall in love with it because of that alone. I am a seasoned paranormal reader, but I never have read a strictly werebear (bear-shifter) never made that clear to be honest. Some authors a very particular about that. Anyways that

ARC Review:

Ok first I need to tell Lila how very proud I am of her for venturing outside of her comfort zone and writing a shifter book. I know she was very nervous but Lila my girl, this book is not only a beautiful love story, its a work of art. As always, Lila has managed to bring us into these amazing realistic characters lives and hold us there until the very end. I laughed, cried ( note to self, never read a Lila Felix book in a crowed doctor's office) and felt elated right along with Hawk
This book had many elements to it that were very similar to some of my favorite werewolf books (ironic, since this book is about bears):

"Alpha & Omega" by Patricia Briggs: A damaged pack holds heroine captive for the main purpose of having access to her "healing" abilities. Also, heroine does not feel the need to obey their forced Alpha, yet does so anyway, because...reasons.

"Grey Wolves" by Quinn Loftis: Hero under threat of having to fight for the right to bond with his mate, due to a chal

Meh. He saves her in the first few chapters. They imprint, or whatever right away. No conflict. Then they spend the next 85% of the book playing house. Then a conflict arises that has been building for while, and I start to get excited and think the story may go somewhere after all. But no, the huge issues is resolved in one chapter and once again they are back to playing house. Seriously. Nothing happens. We'll, stuff happens, but nothing interesting. No conflict. No drama. No action. But they ...more

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Burden is a paranormal romance story focusing on a clan of bear shifters. For the uninitiated, a shifter, or were, is an animal that changes form or “shifts” into a human, or a human who shifts into an animal depending on the mythology of the story. Werewolves typically being the most common example of these in books and movies. So yes, this makes our main characters werebears. I've read a lot of shifter books over the years and I c

Lila Felix has moved into a genre uncharted for her. She finally stepped out into the paranormal realm. I must say her first attempt at writing a paranormal romance reads as if she has written them many times.

What I like: Although this is different for Lila, it still has that "Lila feel" to it. There is something so comforting about the way she develops her characters, and I like knowing that I'm going to fall in love with them all.

What I didn't like: My main complaint with any Lila Fe

Oh boy! Oh boy, where do I start? I LOVED this book. I loved how it was a paranormal romance, with shifters. And I love how it has a uniqueness to it - it’s black bears instead of wolves. AMAZING! It has the aspect of the dual POV’s which I really enjoy.

Hawke - what can I say about Hawke! He’s a great character, as the alpha of the pack he has to show strength, but he has this vulnerability which is so sweet, you just wanna give him a giant bear hug!!!

Echo - this is an amazing character. I love
I've read a few of her books and I know she writes "clean", but for some reason I expected her to branch out at least a little bit since she was dipping her pen into the shifter world. I was wrong. It was squeaky clean. Even more so than other books I've read of hers. There was much talk of the "Creator" and staying a virgin until the mating night. It came off a wee bit preachy, even more so when a clan member was banished for stealing and having sex with a member from a different clan and they ...more

There comes a time when a reader will read every single book of they're favorite author. I am one of those readers. Burden is Lila Felix's very first paranormal romance! When I heard this was in the works, I was like oh shit this is real! I was so excited! And boy when I got the ARC I ran through my house like a freaking maniac (my parents probably thought I was having a seizure or something)! My reasoning for five fantastical stars is because frankly that's what this book deserves! No, wait, th ...more

I really enjoyed this book because it is fresh and different to the other shifter books. This book is about bear shifters. I was recommended it by a friend and I was a bit wary that I might not like it because even though I have read a book from this author before, which I really enjoyed, I thought that I might not like the whole bear shifter story but I am pleased it exceeded my expectations and I devoured this book. The story line flowed well, there was some funny bits here and there aswell. I ...more

I liked this book, i really did. But, i wanted to love it. Beautiful cover. It really draws the reader in for sure. There was just something missing for me, I don't know if it was just too much "mates" and not enough action or plot for me or what, but i just liked it. I really enjoy dual POV, but i just found myself seeing some stuffy older man when i would read Hawke, not a rugged sexy bear man that i wanted to see in my mind. Still a good story, i am glad i read it. :)

Hmmm. I was disappointed by this. Blurb sucked me in and I totally magpied "ooooh, pretty!" the cover. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. I found myself having to reread sections of dialogue because I became confused with who was speaking--character voice wasn't developed well enough for it to be apparent at all times. I also found myself skim reading toward the end.

I read this based on a friends recommendation and as per usual she was right. It really was a lovely story, no real swearing, sex, violence was pretty tame actually and it was great!

I will definitely continue with this series.

This was honestly really good. Like i waant expecting much im a bit sad no bedroom scenes were included though lol and some things were told instead of shown the writing was a bit clumsy in places and the scene transitions and world building couldve been a bit better but in spite of those lil things that werent necessarily bad i really enjoyes this book and this world the characters had sooooo much going for them the realness my god. I really like this. It was detailed enough to paint a vivid picture in my mind, but the dialogue really cemented the fact that this book was awesome. Both main characters were strong and made the perfect match. Echo was stronger then I could have ever hoped for, but she also needed Hawke in a way that melted my heart. There are 2 other books out in this series and I’m excited to read those. They are classified as YAish type reads, and yes, they pretty much are but as someone that doesn’t really ...more

The story is a cute, fluff read. While the book starts out with one of the main characters enslaved, that issue is quickly resolved to move on to the majority of the conflict which comes from the main two characters learning how to make their relationship work. I feel like the characters aren't consistently themselves, and some of the conflicts seem forced and out of place, but the story was still enjoyab

Hawke Turnclaw is trying to bring his clan out of debt thanks to the previous alpha. Now someone needs his help but it isn't just any bear, it is his mate. Being shunned by her clan most of her life Echo and they keep her prisoner so running away is not an option for her until a sexy man comes to save her. But will Echo be treated any differently by her new clan then her old clan.

I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book. This is book 1 of the series Bayou Bear Chronicles by the au
Echo is a bear shifter who has been lied to and mistreated her whole life. When she gets the chance to get away, and find her mate things get complicate, especially when a long lost family member shows up. I liked this book, and I thought it was really good. The only part I didn't like was what happened towards the end between the hero and heroine. That seemed stupid and a poor choice, and the mother didn't make sense at all, I would have told her to shove it.

I wish that the major conflict was more of a... well... CONFLICT. It was pretty lackluster, and it would have been better if we'd had some plot twists that were actually TWISTS. The problems between Echo and Hawke were boring and quickly resolved. And you couldn't even tell that Echo had been abused. At all. She was too normal for someone with her kind of backstory.

Three stars because even though I found it boring, it wasn't a BAD book. Just not something I would reread or recommend.
