I was reminded of this book tonight when we were looking at Comet Panstarrs in our Texas sky. My fourth grade teacher read to us each day after lunch, and this book and Charlotte's Web come to mind any time I think back to that sunny classroom. I liked the first Johnny Texas book, but this one was even better. If you want to read a book about a good boy who learns true what it means to be truly brave, this is an excellent book. Johnny must make his way on the San Antonio Road alone, and he encounters several adventures. Paul and I couldn't put it down.

Carol Hoff innocently captures life in Texas after statehood. Johnny works to proves his worth just as Texas may have been trying to prove its worth at the same time mid-19th century. The book interplays the delicate balance between Spanish settlers, American natives and white men. Unfortunately, both natives and white prove to be scoundrels.
