A collection of twelve stories for older readers, all inspired by a love of the fairy tale. Some are new stories written in the classic styles of Grimm and Aesop. Others offer different views of the stories you know so well. Still others reset the story in the present, in both style and location. All share the themes of magic and heroes and animals that speak.

If you are looking for a weekend afternoon read that won't take too much time from completing boring real-life tasks, In a Land Far Away . . . is a quick escape into the once-upon-a-time of redeemable princes, mischievous fairy queens, unwilling pied pipers, litigious giants, and de-Disneyfied Cinderellas.

This book is a clever, creative dip into the pool of popular fairy tales. The authors of the short stories shift perspectives, play with time and scene, and sometimes acknowledge the frighten

These twelve tales use traditional fairy tales or fables as a jumping point and jump they do. Good becomes evil, medieval becomes modern, and Grimm becomes even Grimmer, as the tried and true wind up fried in a stew. I especially liked Teresa Robeson's spin on Cinderella, updated with a "bird's eye view" to make it more Cinder-relevant. Speaking of cinders, don't miss her edgy take on The Three Pigs, facing fire this time from a pyromaniac named Old Korowai, referencing the tree people of Papua, ...more

From the same group of authors who brought us OUT OF TIME: FIVE TALES OF TIME TRAVEL, comes an anthology of remained and fractured fairy tales. A quick read, I enjoyed all the stories, particularly "The March" by Paul Siluch (the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamlin told from the perspective of a desperate man enthralled by an evil instrument) and "The Land of Dreams" by Janet Guy (a new fairy tale with timeless themes and a sly ending).

A wonderful collection of imaginative new fairy tales (including some riffs on older tales). The fact that 100 percent of the proceeds benefit Doctors Without Borders means you can do good while having a great time reading.

Familiar tales told with a twist

I had never heard of any of these authors before though the stories they tell are not unfamiliar. Practically all of them are based on the old fairytales made famous by the Brothers Grimm. However, these stories are not those stories by a long shot. A few of them are lovely; some are just strange. A couple have actual morals while others have no purpose at all. It's an interesting collection but not quite what I was looking for.
