This is a geology book of the Colorado plateau that ranges from the San Juan Mountains and the Book Cliffs (near Grand Junction, CO) all the way to the border of Utah and Nevada south to the Grand Canyon.
It explains the rock history from the Precambrian period to the present time. It starts with the Grand Canyon since the rocks nearest the river are probably the oldest and starts progressing through time that Utah, New Mexico and part of Arizona and Colorado were deserts, oceans and mountain building time. The author describes the various rock layers found and where to see them. He writes in eary to understand language and has numerous maps and charts.
The author also shares a raft trip that he took through the Grand Canyon. My only problem with the book is that many of the maps are in the middle of the book and are creased with the binding.
When I started this book, I knew nothing about geology. Know I now nearly nothing about geology. The book explains the scientific concepts pretty well for a general audience.
A living classic in the field of study of the Colorado Plateau. This book has been invaluable for me in my studies of the region. Very readable! This book is a great way to learn about the geologic history of the region. Baars has a good sense of entertainment in his writing. I found the work to be engaging as well as entertaining.
I have always been fascinated by the Colorado Plateau. This book delves into how this geographic province came to be. some of the book is a bit technical, but it's a must read for anyone interested in the Colorado Plateau.
