OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

Heh :)

Satisfying ending in my opinion, the final battle disappointed me a little bit because i was expecting more but i guess it serves the story so i'm ok with it. The last two chapters were interesting, depicting a world that i wouldn't mind to read more about. I actually liked more those chapter than the whole volume hahaha.

Series overall: A good one, there were times that it felt like the story dragg to much but it ended up being a good shonen. Not necessary one of the best but an entertaining one for sure.

4/5 Stars (%83/100)

With volume 34, we finally say goodbye to Fire Force. It has been a good journey for me and I am quite satisfied with the ending. Though I cannot wait for all of these to be animated. The ending of this series also confirmed that Fire Force and Soul Eater are connected. This actually made me curious about Soul Eater as I pretty much know nothing about it.

Shinra transforms into Shinrabansho-man as Shinra, Sho and Mari Kusakabe combine. If I'm not wrong Shinrabansho means all of creation or something similar. This is why Shinra is like a god now. Thanks to his new form he will be able to fight the Evangelist and become the Hero he strived to be. It is also nice that we got to see the aftermath of the battle. Overall, I liked the ending and I know it is not THE perfect ending we were hoping for but I'm not sure what I would change it specifically. However, Fire Force is definitely worth your time, both manga and the anime.

Fire Force was one heck of a ride from start to finish and will definitely go down as one of my favorite mangas of all time due to its immaculate world building, intriguing power system, and captivating art and here's why. For starters its world building really built a grand scale of mystery to the reader that had a immaculate payoff in particular the mystery about Spontaneous Human Combustion(SHC) which is a phenomenon that turned people into fire monsters really enticed me to keep reading especially with how it was baked into so many characters backstories which helped the world feel so connected to this mystery with how every character had there own motives to try and solve this mystery. In addition the power system was spectacularly executed, because while it may seem simple at first with people either getting the ability to generate or manipulate fire every character uses it so uniquely that it keeps the system interesting yet still simplistic, this really helps with the readability and choreography of the action segments which enhances the story tenfold and overall improves the quality of the story. Finally the art is spectacular with how its able to capture emotions perfectly, not to mention the absolutely stunning backgrounds in Fire force are like no other manga I've read before, more specifically the fight scenes are drawn beautifully in such a way that kept me enticed the entire way through which builds on my point about Fire Force´s choreography from earlier, in addition the emotions that pour out from characters are drawn absolutely beautifully in such way that words alone couldn't express the same emotions, lastly the art is spectacular at depicting pure fear and dread from villains in particular the character Dr. Giovanni was drawn to be super unsettling and disturbing which makes the reader truly fear him as a threat, additionally it makes it all the more satisfying when he gets taken down. Overall Fire Force has truly cemented itself in my heart as a personal favorite of mine through everything I've listed in this review it was a spectacular read that kept me wanting for more at every turn .

Shinra has a final showdown with Haumea. Hope vs Despair

...and it seems like the argument is going nowhere. Because living things despair because they fear death. So if everything was dead, there'd be nothing living left to fear death, thus eliminating despair. But hope is still a thing and life can be enjoyed and living things instinctually choose life so therefore the joy of living is greater than despair. But despair will never go away if living things still live.

So Shinra alters the world so life isn't as precious and death is more familiar... exactly what that means, I don't understand. But the result is the world of Soul Eater which officially makes Fire Force a prequel. (Which for me is good, because I haven't had the chance to read Soul Eater yet. I've only watched the anime. Great series.)

Overall, this series was... weird. Because it starts off like a typical shonen, then goes all existential crisis about half way through. I'll probably need to reread it at some point (because I think the start and stop of waiting for the next volume messed me up) so feel free to disregard my opinion.

This series had 34 volumes.

RECENSIONE DELL'INTERO MANGA
Sinceramente...

Well folks, that wraps it up huh?
This is by far the most bizarre and unhinged manga that I've read and damn. was it bizarre.
But it was meant to be bizarre so I guess that's a plus point- anyways
This was a shonen so I i was expecting a shonen ending ofcourse.
I'll say what I did like was that it ventured real deep into the "what could've been if the bad guys suceeded" I mean what with the world actually burning and stuff? And so it was interesting to see it being brought back after being that far gone.

And last but not the least, the art. THE. ART- CUZ HOW DO YOU NOT LOOSE YOUR MIND DRAWING THOSE BUILDINGS?? I COULD NEVER. Mad respect to the mangaka. I could stare at the buildings and infrastructure he drew for ages and still be mesmerized by it.

This ending reminds me a lot of Shaman King's final battle as it is not really a battle in a conventional way as they are both about trying to convince the final villain not to go through with their plan. And the fight was pretty cool and how they finally transition into Soul Eater is really cool even if I have a few questions like where is Asura and what did happen to the World Heroes Force did it become part of the Shinigami's force.
But still the series as a whole is really good with a lot fun and interesting characters with some really great world building. The progression is really good and the themes about Hope vs Despair, the collective unconsciousness, and what makes a person a hero.

So, last volume. What I thought?
Extremely well worldbuilding, lots of philosophical points, a very harsh critic of japanese culture (and culture overall).
To me, Ohkubo is an amazing mangaka. Love how most of his stories end without the death of the villain. In shonen style, always groundbreaking.
He's very experimental, mixing photos with his drawings in several parts of the manga.
I love how his characters are always very human, specially his villains.
The dialogue between Shinrabanshoman and Evangelist is beautiful, even if very misunderstood.
Great series, probably next year I would read Soul Eater.

9/10 This was the final volume of Fire Force and I knew that coming in :’(. It started off with Shinra’s new form of him, sho and his mother combined into one called Shinra Bansho Man. He went head to head with Haumea. She’s combined herself with the evangelist to become the saintess of despair. Shinra basically becomes a god of creation and started putting out the black flames and creating nature instead. Shinra Sho and Haumea all go back and forth about the ideal world and how no matter what the world will always have despair. No matter how much good, there will always be bad. People will always have fear and death. Shinra hears this a creates a new world. A world where there is no fear because you will no longer die unless the god of death that he created deems so. He convinces Haumea to live in the new world with its potential by reconnecting her with Charon and taking the voices out of her head. Some people decided to pass on forever and not come back to life, while some came back from the dead and reconnected with loved ones. The force force disbanded but the they created a hero force instead. Everyone loved Shinra. He started to smile from happiness instead of smiling when he’s nervous. Arthur eventually came down from space and they reconnected as well. Inca and Iris both want to be Shinra’s girlfriend but he chooses Iris. And the hero squad chases down Iris because she’s a witch and wreaks havoc on the world because Shinra won’t give her his seed. She wants to have the world’s biggest hero’s baby. People seem to still have some kind of powers based on the strength of their soul. I never read or watched soul eater but I’m going to have to see how or if the stories connect. Fire force was a blast and I enjoyed every bit of it. Shinra and the whole squad ended up building a new world, with new morals and ambitions. Also a lot of people were coupling up because they knew life was short after the catalysm and wanted to hop on any feelings they had. Then the epilogue takes us to 25 years later where Shinra is the world hero force supreme leader and obi is the president. The epilogue ends with the god of death creating a boy who resembles Shinra, im assuming this has to do with soul eater so I might not understand but hopefully I do soon. It’s been real fire force, gonna miss ya.

Finally finished this series! I gave it another chance since I read all of soul eater. Fire force started off with a really cool concept and I really liked the world and world building that went into. Towards the end, I feel like it went off the rails and the author was forcing this world to become the soul eater world. Some things felt like a stretch and some things made no sense at all. I feel like the world of fire force and the concept was strong and cool enough to stand on its own, but I know that a lot of people enjoyed that it's a prequel and tied to soul eater.

Fire Force overall thoughts:
- LOVED the science aspect
- Got a little too philosophical at the end for me. I get that you have to have hope, but it felt a little heavy handed.
- Time jump at end was fine but seemed unnecessary
- Overall I enjoyed the endings to the characters' plots (I am a little confused if Arthur is just a space boy now??)
- Enjoyable experience overall. I'm glad I read the series.

1st half of Fire Force: Generic battle shonen.

2nd half: Social commentary, metanarrative, cosmic horror, space warfare, existentialism, Arthurian legend, biblical allegory, rebirth... and a prequel to Soul Eater?

Peak fiction.

This particular volume was odd. I felt it didn't really make a lot of sense and felt rushed to end. However I did enjoy the entire series, and love how it connects to another favorite series by the same author.
