And Quiet Flows the Don (And Quiet Flows the Don #3-4), Mikhail Sholokhov

Tiknii Don = Quietly Flows the Don: a novel in Four books

And Quiet Flows the Don or Quietly Flows the Don or Quiet Don, is an epic novel in four volumes by Russian writer Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov.

The first three volumes were written from 1925 to 1932 and published in the Soviet magazine Oktyabr in 1928–1932, and the fourth volume was finished in 1940.

The English translation of the first three volumes appeared unde

What a joy to discover the sequel to “And Quiet Flows the Don”, which I never knew existed until I stumbled across both volumes in a second hand bookshop. It’s even better than the first volume, because the cumulative effect of all those hundreds of absorbing pages pulls you in ever deeper into the narrative. And it never lets up, not even to the very last page. What a master craftsman Sholokhov was, even if one senses he was not a barrel of laughs. True, there are no really likeable characters, ...more
خوب ...more

"Need isn't your own mother, but it makes people kin."

Far and away this tragic title was more gripping and impactful than its predecessor, 'And Quiet Flows the Don'. (The two books combine to make the single epic 'The Quiet Don'.) Reading AQFD in advance is required. Further, AQFD is the only volume of the two actually still in print (and by 'print' I mean 'print only'--neither e-book nor audio exist for either title). The internet is surprisingly devoid of any form of study guides or analysis,

Recommends it for: Everyone
1966 Vintage Books printing of the 1940 Knopf edition. I liked this even more than the previous part of the story recounted in "And Quiet Flows the Don." Deals with the very difficult situations faced by the characters during the Russian civil war. I'm surprised the Soviets allowed it to be published in 1939!

Book 2 of the Quiet Don saga. Continues the story of Cossack Gregor Melekhov. Despite the controversy over plagiarism, I highly recommend both novels, they are a great read. I wish that there was another English translation of these novels.

Sequel to: And Quiet Flows...

Just as engaging, but suggest taking a break between the two (with something lighter).

I would give this book another star or two if its excessive length was not out of all proportion with its modest good points.

The strength of Volume Two is that it provides an excellent analysis of the world view of the Don Cossacks during the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). The Cossacks were a caste of freeholders formally recognized in 1710 who lived on the Southern Frontier of Tsarist Russia. Whereas most Russians were serfs, the Cossacks were free and could own land. In return for these privil

The Quiet Don was an unforgettable journey from beginning to end. Sholokhov's book is a masterpiece because the characters are all so human. Their decisions aren't always rational, but that is because humans aren't always rational. Every one of them is relatable on one level or another. Gregor's journey from a fiery young cossack with a quick temper to a disillusioned old man is the centerpiece of the novel but each of the characters in the Melekhov family has an arc of their own. The chapter in ...more

This continues the high standard of Quiet Flows The Don. It is obvious that Sholokhov loves the Don region by the vivid descriptions of the region. The sights, sounds and even smells are magnificently evoked. Sholokhov was a convinced Communist but despite this he tried to be as even handed as anyone could be in Stalin's Russia to the doomed Cossacks. You sense that he feels the loss of their way of life even though as a Marxist he would see their attitudes as reactionary and not in line with th ...more

This is the second volume to the two-part historical novel by Sholokov. I only found out of its existence by being stupefied when finishing the first volume, things just didn’t add up. Penguin should publish both as a two-part work.
Sholokov immerses the reader into the culture, community and fundamentals of the once thriving Cossack population inhabiting the area north and east of the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea and the surrounding Steppe. A riveting work along the lines of War and Peace concer

Получается, каз ...more

Wow. Wow. Wow.
These books (And Quiet Flows the Don and this one) are forever wrenching my heart and dazzling me with gorgeous imagery. Sholokhov has created an amazing world around the Don Cossacks during the early 20th century. It is brutal, violent and harsh. Yet, these characters still find joy in the world, amidst WWII and civil war. I've been brought close to tears (this is probably the first novel that has done it to me) and been elated for these characters. I buy this book over and over i
