Mandy and her brother Peter are determined to protect their younger siblings from an abusive existence with a cruel uncle, so plan an early morning escape to New York City. There all four children find refuge in Mrs. Plippen's boarding house for theatrical folks, Peter finds a job - and all four children find friends who will help them make a new life in an exciting location.

Madye Lee Chastain was a children's book author and illustrator who wrote 17 children's books from 1945-1964, most of them for Harcourt, and she illustrated children's books written by other authors as well as her own.
