The concept of this book is for certain pictures there is a photo of the site and then an overlay which shows a reconstruction. These work well. I also liked the short history of Vesuvius at the start which covered the modern period. The book is Pompeii heavy. Only 7 of 40 pages are devoted to Herculaneum. The book could have done with a glossary for the Latin words such as the parts of a house.
I’ve always been fascinated with the eruption of mount vesuvius from a scientific perspective, but this book was exceptional at helping me to understand how the people of Pompeii lived. The overlays on photographs were extremely helpful; I wish I could have seen overlays like that for every Mayan ruin I’ve toured.
